His dark, metallic eyes were glaring at me, as his grip tightened around my arms. It was like he could read my mind, he could sense I was trying to think of a plan to escape him. I looked at his well built arms, where veins were more prominent on his strong muscles. Then I glanced at his eyes once again. He certainly was the most gorgeous man I had ever seen, nothing like the slim and playful fairy boys I were used to.

No, Elijah was a man and a very powerful man at that. He leaned in, his lips almost on my cheek. At that moment I could smell him so well, with the crook of his neck being so close to my nose. His scent reminded me of a forest right after a storm.

“Once again - You will do as I tell you to, if you want to live!” his hoarse voice poured in my ear, making my legs weaker than ever before and my mouth went completely dry.

Chapter 1
Scintilla POV: It was the peak of summer, little flies buzzing around everything, even the things that most certainly weren’t food. I exhaled, trying to push some of the fruit flies with my breath out of my face. I was already sweating too much, I didn’t want any of the tiny flies to get stuck to my face anymore.  Then I took another deep breath, so I could face the hell in the kitchen. There were food scraps everywhere, even on the places where it made no sense. The fridge was over six feet tall, so how did my stepmother, who was almost a foot shorter than that, managed to get flour and bits of fruits on it? Why would you even put anything on the top of the fridge? Today was Summer Solstice, and after the whole fairy kingdom had greeted the sun in the big meadow behind the castle this morning, everyone returned back home to prepare foods and drinks for the big celebration this evening. And so did my stepmother. We didn’t have the best relationship, so she suggested to me and my father, that she would make the food and after she is done, I could clean it up. I quite liked the idea until now, when I saw how she had destroyed our whole kitchen. I did wonder if she had done it on purpose.  My stepmother Vivian had been a friend of my mothers. They met when my mother got sick,  she actually had helped my mother when I or my father couldn’t. Yet I never really liked her presence, even when she was just friends of my moms, but especially when she shortly after my mothers death made her moves on my father. My father Benjamin was a good man, he always said that truth is the most important thing in this universe. Even if the truth would destroy, it should be revealed, no matter what. That’s why he made a great judge in our kingdom. Everyone always knew that he would be honest and righteous to all. Other fairies envied him for that, yet they were far more jealous of who he had gotten to marry.  My mother Melody was the most gorgeous woman, even the king had joked how if he had been a bit younger, he could have married my mother. She had strawberry blonde hair and deep green eyes. Nobody had ever seen such beautiful green eyes, that paired off so well with her tiny nose and tiny mouth. She looked like an come to life anime character. And she was so kind and peaceful, she could calm everyones emotions so easily, that’s why she was quite often invited to the court, where my father worked, to calm people down.  The funny thing was her name though. Her parents had given her the name of Melody, because when she was born she couldn’t stop screaming. Her parents laughed, saying she just wanted to sing, so they gave her the name Melody. But funny enough, my mother grew up to have one of the worst singing voices in the kingdom. She attended choir classes in school, but even the teacher there asked her to not sing and just mouth the words with no sound. The teacher thought she looked great on the first row of the choir, yet she couldn’t sing to save her life. When my mom got really sick couple years ago, she would always laugh and joke around that she got her disease, because she just couldn't sing. But it wasn’t true. She and my dad had tried to have another baby. And when they thought they had succeeded, the towns doctor revealed to us that my mother had ovarian cancer. It was bizarre that a fairy had gotten a humans disease. Most fairies never in their life got sick with anything, besides breathing in too much fairy dust. But even that could be easily treated with some aloe drinks.  Yet my mother had managed to get a severe disease, that was only known in the human world. She was the only fairy in our whole history that had managed to do that. There were stories of some magical beings getting a less frightening sickness from humans like a common cold or a hepatitis. Those were treated by some towns witches. But when my mom had gotten sick, we didn’t have any witches living in our kingdom and the ones that we managed to find near by couldn’t help her with this awful human disease.  My father blamed himself in the beginning. He was the one who so desperately wanted to have another baby. My mom, Melody, had managed to get pregnant, but the baby while nearly developed, died in her uterus. She was so devastated, radiating her sorrow towards everyone. It was unbearable to most people who lived around us. Even through walls they could feel this sadness and darkness. Just like my mother could radiate positive feeling to everyone to calm them down, in that tragic moment, she would radiate immense amount of misery to the people nearby. Most of our neighbours moved to other places in town, no one wanted to come and visit my dying mother. Even my father Benjamin, to keep a clear head for court, avoided coming home. He felt terrible, but he had to do his job. I also think that it was too hard for him to see her so depressed.  It was just me and my mom. I would bring her flowers from the meadow, branches with beautiful, fluffy, green moss on them from the forest. And I would tell her made up stories about how the nature had created her from the most gorgeous things on this planet. Her hair were made out of sun bleached poppy pedals, yet her green eyes were made out of the moss in the forests. Her body made out of a graceful wildcat, while her pale skin made out of the birch trees. Even through the hottest summers, her skin would stay completely pale. Summers were her favourite, so she made them mine as well. She would always compare my glassy wings to the clear water in the nearby waterfall, where she would take me each summer to see the sunrise. While the townspeople would swear that the best sunrise view was from the meadow behind the castle, my mom disagreed. She said that the best sunrise for any fairy was to fly up the waterfall and see the sun raising as did we.  I was glad that I managed to get her see one of those sunrises on her last Summer Solstice celebration. Just as any fairy, my mom loved the event, as any fairies powers were at the peak during that day. Since a fairies powers are dependent on the sun, so of course the day where we are exposed to the sun the longest, our powers reach their peak. Even our senses like smell, taste and any other feelings are more prominent than ever.  My mom always laughed and said that fairies were like bears. We would come out and play during the sunny and warm months, but during winter we would spend most of our time sleeping and learning crafts indoors. She had named me our families ‘little teddy bear’, because when I was just a child, during winter months I would only sleep and refuse to leave my bed. Summer Solstice used to be my favourite day as well, until four years ago when my mother passed away on this day. That was the last day I managed to fly her over to the waterfall to see the sunrise. And for the first time in months I felt a glimpse of happiness radiating from her. Usually on the day of Summer Solstice, the whole fairy kingdom would watch the sunrise together, but I wanted to make my mother happy, so I begged my father to cover for us, when we took off to the other side to the town.  As I remembered all of it, I looked out of the kitchens window towards the forest that was hiding the beautiful waterfall. Then I glimpsed to the position of the sun and realised it was later than I thought it would be. I had to quickly start working on the cleaning part of this day.
