The Bond Of The Moon
The night air shimmered with silver light, the full moon glowing like a promise above the pack grounds. My wolf stirred restlessly beneath my skin, her excitement thrumming in my chest as if she already knew what was about to happen. Tonight was my eighteenth birthday — the night I would finally discover my fated mate. For as long as I could remember, I had dreamed of this moment. To stand beneath the Moon Goddess’ gaze and feel that pull, that undeniable bond that would tie my soul to another. Some she-wolves found their mates early, others later, but for me, this was the night. My hands trembled slightly as I smoothed my dress, the soft fabric brushing against my skin. The pack had gathered in the clearing, laughter and voices weaving through the night air. Torches blazed on either side of the pathway, leading toward the ceremonial stone at the heart of the field. I inhaled deeply, my wolf urging me forward. Then I felt it. The spark. It hit me like a wave crashing over my body, sending shivers racing down my spine. My heart thudded in my chest, and my eyes instinctively searched the crowd. My gaze locked with his — Kael. The future Alpha. Tall, broad-shouldered, with eyes like storm clouds and a presence that commanded silence even when he said nothing. His scent reached me on the breeze, pine and smoke, and it sank into me like it had always belonged there. My wolf howled in recognition, her joy bursting through me. Mate. The word thundered inside my mind, undeniable, absolute. Kael stepped forward, his eyes narrowing slightly as if he too had felt the same bond snap into place. The crowd murmured, gasps rising as they realized what had happened. The Alpha’s son, the future leader of the pack, and me — Matilda, chosen by the Moon Goddess to stand beside him. For a moment, time froze. My breath caught in my throat as Kael approached, his movements slow, measured. He stopped in front of me, his towering presence casting me in shadow. “You’re mine,” he said, his voice deep, the words carrying across the clearing like a vow. Heat spread through me, and I lowered my head slightly, overwhelmed with happiness. Around us, the pack erupted in cheers, celebrating the bond that had just been revealed. My parents hugged each other, pride shining in their eyes, and elders clapped their hands in blessing. Kael reached for my hand, lifting it gently, and pressed his lips against my knuckles. The crowd cheered louder, the sound echoing through the forest. My wolf preened inside me, purring at the touch of her mate. This was it. My life was changing, my dreams unfolding. I was the mate of the future Alpha, destined to be Luna. Yet, even in that perfect moment, a flicker of something I couldn’t name crossed Kael’s face. His lips curved into a smile, but his eyes… his eyes weren’t soft, weren’t filled with the same wonder and relief that burned in mine. They were calculating, cold, as though he were already thinking of something else. I told myself I was imagining it. That maybe the shock of discovering me as his mate had unsettled him. That soon, when we were alone, he would hold me close, whisper promises in my ear, and everything would feel as it should. Still, the unease lingered. The night wore on, filled with celebration and music. Pack members offered their blessings, elders spoke words of guidance, and food and drink flowed freely. Kael stayed by my side, his hand brushing mine, but there was a distance in his gaze, a subtle detachment that no one else seemed to notice. When the moon reached its highest point, Kael raised his glass to the crowd. “Tonight,” he declared, his voice strong and commanding, “the Moon Goddess has blessed me with my mate. Together, Matilda and I will lead this pack into greatness.” Cheers roared once more, and I smiled, my heart swelling at the sound of his words. But beneath the joy, doubt stirred quietly in my chest. For the bond was supposed to feel like fire and lightning, like two halves finally whole. And while I burned for him, while my wolf sang his name… there was something missing in his eyes when he looked at me. I pushed it away. Tonight was not the time for doubts. Tonight, I had everything I had ever wanted. But little did I know, the shadows of betrayal were already creeping closer. And Kael was not the man I believed him to be. ---
