The night air shimmered with silver light, the full moon glowing like a promise above the pack grounds. Heat spread through me, and I lowered my head slightly, overwhelmed with happiness. Around us, the pack erupted in cheers, celebrating the bond that had just been revealed. My parents hugged each other, pride shining in their eyes, and elders clapped their hands in blessing. Kael reached for my hand, lifting it gently, and pressed his lips against my knuckles. The crowd cheered louder, the sound echoing through the forest. My wolf preened inside me, purring at the touch of her mate. This was it. My life was changing, my dreams unfolding. I was the mate of the future Alpha, destined to be Luna. Yet, even in that perfect moment, a flicker of something I couldn’t name crossed Kael’s face. Kael stayed by my side, his hand brushing mine, but there was a distance in his gaze, a subtle detachment that no one else seemed to notice. When the moon reached its highest point, Kael raised his glass to the crowd. “Tonight,” he declared, his voice strong and commanding, “the Moon Goddess has blessed me with my mate. Together, Matilda and I will lead this pack into greatness.” Cheers roared once more, and I smiled, my heart swelling at the sound of his words. But beneath the joy, doubt stirred quietly in my chest. For the bond was supposed to feel like fire and lightning, like two halves finally whole. And while I burned for him, while my wolf sang his name… there was something missing in his eyes when he looked at me. I pushed it away. Tonight was not the time for doubts.
