"A Dinner with The Wolves"

1236 Words
Two days had passed. As Emily arrived at the den, she was greeted by a stern-looking Marcus. "Welcome, Emily. I'll show you to your room." On their way, they encountered Aurora, who sneered at Emily. "Well, well, well. Look what we have here. The human who thinks she can tame our future alpha." Emily felt a surge of annoyance but remained silent. Marcus led her to a cozy room, where a maid was waiting to help her settle in. As they entered, Aurora appeared in the doorway. "Marcus will never come to like you, Emily. You're just a bargain between the wolves and humans. His heart belongs to me." Emily's eyes flashed, but Marcus remained impassive. "Aurora, that's enough." The tension was palpable, but Emily stood her ground. "I'm not here to compete with you, Aurora. I'm here to learn." Aurora snorted. "You'll learn soon enough. Marcus will never love a human." As Emily settled into her room, the maid returned with a gentle knock on the door. "Miss Emily, it's time for the evening meal. The pack is gathering in the grand hall." Emily's stomach growled at the prospect of food. She followed the maid to a large closet filled with beautiful dresses. "Choose one that fits you, miss. The pack likes to dress up for special occasions." Emily's eyes widened as she scanned the dresses. She selected a stunning silver gown that hugged her curves and complemented her eyes. The maid helped her into the dress, and Emily felt like a princess. As they made their way to the grand hall, Emily's nerves fluttered. She had never seen so many wolves in one place before. The hall was filled with chatter and laughter, and the tables were laden with delicious food. Marcus stood at the head of the table, his eyes locking onto hers with a hint of approval. For a moment, he forgot about the pack's politics, the tensions with Aurora, and the weight of his responsibilities. All he saw was Emily, radiant and captivating. He couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to approach her, to take her hand, and to lead her through the pack's gathering as his partner. But he quickly suppressed those thoughts, reminding himself of his duties and the boundaries he had set. He couldn't afford to show weakness or vulnerability. Still, he couldn't help but steal glances at Emily throughout the evening, his eyes drawn to her like a magnet. He noticed the way she laughed with the pack members, her smile lighting up the room, and her grace as she moved through the crowds. Marcus's inner struggle intensified, his instincts urging him to claim Emily as his own, while his rational mind warned him against it. Little did he know, this inner turmoil was only the beginning of a journey that would challenge everything he thought he knew about himself and his place in the pack. Emily's heart raced as she took her seat beside Marcus at the head table. "Emily, dear, it's an honor to have you join us," Marcus's mother said, her eyes shining with sincerity. "Thank you, ma." Emily replied, trying to sound formal. Marcus's father, a broad-shouldered man with a kind face, smiled. "Please, call us Aurelia and Thane. We're not too formal here." Emily smiled back, feeling a sense of relief. "Thank you, Thane. Your hospitality is overwhelming." Aurelia leaned in, her voice warm. "We're glad to have you, Emily. Our son has told us so much about you." Marcus's eyes flickered to his mother, a hint of warning in his gaze. Emily wondered what he had told them about her. Aurelia and Thane exchanged a knowing glance, their eyes sparkling with a hint of amusement. Emily wondered if they were pretending to know more about her than they actually did. Marcus had barely spent time with her, and she doubted he had shared much about their brief encounters. "Ah, yes, Marcus has told us all about your... bravery," Thane said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. Aurelia's smile seemed to hide a secret. "Yes, we're delighted to finally meet the human who has captured our son's... attention." Emily's eyes narrowed, sensing a hidden meaning behind their words. She wondered what Marcus had really told them about her, and what they were hiding behind their polite smiles. I apologize for the mistake. You are correct, Emily never expressed interest in learning about their culture, and the l As they sat down to eat, Aurelia asked Emily, "So, how do you like the food? Our chef has prepared a special meal for us tonight." Emily took a bite, her expression polite. "It's...interesting. The flavors are different from what I'm used to." Thane chuckled. "Ah, yes, our cuisine can be quite unique. We've developed a taste for it over the years." Marcus watched Emily, his eyes piercing, as if daring her to say something more. Aurelia tried to lighten the mood. "Well, we're glad you're willing to try new things, Emily. That's a brave trait." Emily smiled faintly, feeling a sense of tension in the air. "Thank you, Aurelia. I'm just trying to be...diplomatic." Their conversations was halted by Aurora's appearance. Aurora swept into the dining room, her red dress commanding attention. She sauntered over to Marcus, her eyes locked on his, and planted a kiss on his cheek. Then, she leaned in closer, her lips puckered, attempting to kiss him on the lips. But Marcus subtly turned his head, avoiding her advances. Emily's eyes widened, a pang of jealousy shooting through her chest. She felt a surge of anger and discomfort, her mind racing with questions. What relationship did they have, exactly? Why was Aurora so comfortable with him? But beneath her anger, Emily couldn't shake off the nagging thought: why did she care so much? She couldn't possibly be developing feelings for Marcus, could she? No, she scolded herself. I can't like a beast of a man without feelings. Aurora's gaze slid to Emily, a sly smile spreading across her face. She seemed to be enjoying Emily's discomfort, her eyes gleaming with a knowing glint. Marcus, however, remained unconcerned, his expression unchanging. He didn't even flinch, as if Aurora's bold move was of no consequence to him. He continued eating, his focus on his food. The pack members watched with interest, their whispers and murmurs growing louder. Emily's face flushed, her anger and embarrassment simmering just below the surface. Aurora leaned in, a mischievous glint in her eye. "So, Emily, how does it feel to be engaged to a wolf? I mean, a literal wolf?" Emily's face flushed, her discomfort evident. "It's...different," she stammered. Aurora chuckled. "I bet. And do you think you'll be able to handle his...wild side?" Emily's eyes darted to Marcus, who was still eating quietly. "I-I think so," she stuttered. Aurora's smile grew wider. "Well, good luck with that. Because, honestly, I don't think you'll last a week with him. And even if you did, Marcus wouldn't like you anyway." Just then, Aurelia, Marcus's mother, interrupted their conversation. "Aurora, dear, why don't you come help me in the kitchen? I need your assistance with the dessert." Aurora's eyes rolled, but she stood up, her movements graceful. "Fine, I'll leave you two alone...for now." As she walked away, Emily let out a sigh of relief, her eyes locked on Marcus, who still seemed uninterested in the conversation.
