CHAPTER ONE
(A LONG TIME AGO)
He came back from work one evening, and the first thing he said to me the second he walked into our bedroom was, "I want a divorce."
For a second, I froze. Unsure whether I had heard him correctly.
My confused gaze flew towards him as he sauntered toward the wardrobe. "What did you just say?" I queried.
Instead of replying to me, he opened the briefcase he had set on the vanity, and then pulled out some papers," These are the official divorce papers. I have summoned the pack and all the elders. "Tonight, we perform the bond-breaking ritual,” he paused for a second,“ We are over."
This time I knew I heard right. My eyes went for his eyes, probably hoping to find a sign that told me more than he was saying.
But I saw nothing. Except a remorseless blank gaze.
Slowly, I picked up the papers, my hands shaking as I read the words in my head.
No way! This can't be true. I tried to convince myself otherwise, my fingers running over the back of my neck in search of our bond mark. "There must be something wrong," I said to myself.
So, with a frown, I looked at him, "Look, Leo, if this is some kind of prank, stop it. It's not funny,"
He opened his mouth to say something. But before the words came out, something hard hit my head. I jerked to a sitting position, only to realize I had been dreaming about what had happened years ago.
“ Stupid fool!” Luna Margarette’s voice echoed, driving off any remnant of sleep in my eyes, “Don't tell me you are sleep-walking again.
“ No ma'am, I, I,” I palmed the back of my head as I stuttered.
“ Shut your dirty mouth!” she snapped without letting me explain,“ The last thing I want to hear are your lies." I asked her to clean Alpha’s studies before he returned. Instead, you are here sprawled on his desk like a useless wretch.
“ Please forgive me ma'am, I didn't mean to sleep here. "My condition…” Again, I tried to explain, but before I could finish, I felt a sharp slap crack across my cheek.
“ What stupid conditions! "Are you the first woman to get pregnant?” she ranted angrily,“ Now listen to me,” she continued, “If Alpha Khaled gets back and this place isn't thoroughly clean...”
Out of nowhere, a voice so deep and very familiar cut through the dimly lighted room,“ So it's true,”
I turned sharply, my breath disappearing from my throat the second I saw the owner of the voice.
The smirk, the scar, the missing eye.
It was him.
And with him, memories from a past I had put behind me came flooding.
His eyes narrowed down to my belly, making a shiver run down my spine. Then his piercing eyes locked with my face again. His lips curved, “You are truly carrying his child,”
“ What's going on here?” Luna Margarette looked at him to me and then back to him, “ Do you two know each other?”
After everything we had done for each other, after all the suffering we had inflicted on each other’s pack, he still looked at me from head to toe and said,“ No”. He glanced at Luna Margarette, shaking his head. “ I thought she was someone I knew,” he chuckled. “ The resemblance was almost deceiving,” he lied, but his ghostly smirk told me there was more.
Like she didn't buy his explanation, Luna Margarette glanced at me with a look that said, is that so?
Torn between who I feared the most, I stuttered, “I, I,...”
“ So what are you trying to say? "Am I a liar?” Alpha Khaled frowned at her.
“ Oh no. "Of course not,” she let out a nervous chuckle, placing her palm over his chest to appease him, “ I didn't even ask her to say anything. "The i***t just spoke out of terms,” then she glared at me angrily,“ Get out here!”
Without any other prompt, I swiftly went for the door. After closing the door behind me, I heard him warn her never to bring up the topic again. And it made me wonder why.
Eighteen months ago, just the sight of me would have cost me my head. Yet here I was, breathing after he had just lied to keep my identity safe.
What is happening?
Hurriedly, I ran to my room. The last thing I wanted was to spend another second amongst the pack I had once helped to wipe out.
After making it to my small dimly lit room, I shut the door and then finally breathed calmly.
“Think, think, think” I smacked my temple as though that was enough to make my head conjure up an escape plan. The only thing I knew was that I shouldn't be here.
After that, nothing else. No place to go. No one to run to. I was alone. Who would have thought that of all the nine wolf packs of the Crescent valley, this was the one I was going to end up in?
Why did he even lie? I asked myself again, scurrying around the room for the things I could carry along with me.
My mind went back to the look in his eyes as he glanced at my belly, and a shiver ran down my spine. This wasn’t mercy. This was something else. I paced the small space, my mind racing.
Maybe he didn’t recognize me at first. Maybe it was a shock. Maybe….
A door knock instantly cut my train of thought and I froze. My eyes darted at the door and my heart sharply began to slam against my chest.
Different thoughts began to run through my mind. You are too late. He has told them about you, Marilyn! He has sent them to kill you!
The second knock came. This time, firmer.
I opened my mouth to ask who it was, but fear made my mouth useless.
Run Marilyn! Run!
The thought crossed my mind. But my legs didn't move. It was as if a part of me wanted to see what would happen.
“ I know you are there. And I am coming in,” his voice came.
“ No….” I jerked through the door. But it was too late. It creaked open, and the first thing his piercing gaze caught was my travel bag.
You are so dead! Marilyn. My heart instantly felt like it had forgotten how to beat.
I looked at him, ready to beg for my dark life.
“ Meet me at the top of Mount Zxag after the tenth howl,” he turned around and began to walk away. When he got to the door, he paused,“ Trying to run is senseless.
“ Then what do you want from me?”
“ Have you forgotten that I have never forgotten a debt?” He fired his own question back at me, and then disappeared.
