Deception in Disguise

Ten years after the ruthless Sterling family stole her parents' legacy and claimed their lives, Valerie Sterling returns under a false name as a penniless scholarship student targeting the empire's guarded heir, Damian. Trapped under his family's suffocating control, Damian falls hopelessly for her sweet, gentle facade—unaware that every soft touch is a calculated move to tear his bloodline down from the inside out. He thinks she is his salvation, but in a game where love was always a weapon, she won't stop until his entire world burns to ashes.

chapter 1
"Run!" "Don’t look back, my little star! Just run! Run as far as you can!" Her father’s voice tore through the heavy night air, drowned out by the harsh metallic snap of blades and the dull thud of bodies hitting the dirt. Valerie was small again, her little feet scrambling through the wet mud of the estate garden. Blood splashed over the white petals of her mother's favorite flowers. She turned back—she couldn't help it. Through the rising smoke, she saw her mother collapse into the lavender, silent and still. She saw the shadows closing in around her father, their cold, murderous eyes fixed directly on her next. "Mom! Dad!" She screamed, but no sound came out. A towering dark figure lunged out of the gloom, a heavy blade swinging straight for her throat— Valerie gasped, her eyes flying open as she bolted upright in the dark. She sat frozen in the center of the bed, her breath coming in ragged, shallow hitches. Cold sweat clung to her forehead, drying slowly in the chill of the air-conditioned room. Her hands were shaking, her heart hammering against her ribs like a caged beast trying to break free. Ten years. Ten years, and the nightmare still caught her by the throat every single night. She pressed her palm to her face, breathing through the suffocating grief until it turned into something much colder. Something lethal. "You thought you finished us, didn't you, Victor?" she whispered to the empty, quiet room, her voice dangerously calm. "You killed Elias and Saphira, took their empire, and thought the wind swept away the rest. But you missed one." She lowered her hand, her eyes dark and hollow in the moonlight. "I’m going to drag every single person who carries your blood straight into the mud." The door clicked open, throwing a thin beam of light across the floorboards. Silas stepped into the room, holding a thick leather binder. He didn't offer comfort or pity—he knew better than to treat her like she was fragile. "It's done," Silas said quietly, placing the binder on the desk. "Valerie Sterling is officially dead. The fake background, the hardship application, the high school transcripts—everything is locked in. As of tomorrow morning, you are Valerie Vance, a penniless scholarship student entering St. Jude Academy." He leaned against the edge of the desk, watching her closely. "Your father’s offshore accounts matured yesterday," Silas added, his tone weighted. "There’s enough money in there to buy an estate anywhere in the world, change your name for real, and live three comfortable lifetimes without ever hearing the name Sterling again. Are you sure about this? Once you step foot on that campus, there is no backing out." Valerie swung her legs over the edge of the bed, her bare feet touching the cold floor. She picked up the binder, running a hand over the fresh paper inside. "If I take that money and run, Victor and Eleanor win," she said slowly. A terrifying, beautiful smile touched her lips, completely devoid of warmth. "I don't want peace, Silas. I want them to bleed. I’m going to make Damian fall so hopelessly in love with me that he’d burn his own empire down just to keep me warm—and then I’m going to lock the doors from the outside." She snapped the binder shut. "It's time to go to school."
