shadows of oakhaven
PART ONE Whispers of Oakhaven "Every town has its secrets. Oakhaven simply learned to keep theirs." Chapter One The Town That Felt Like Home Morning always arrived quietly in Oakhaven. The first rays of sunlight slipped between the branches of the ancient oak trees that lined every street, painting patches of golden light across the quiet roads below. A cool breeze drifted over the lake, carrying the scent of fresh grass and pine through the town. Birds perched on old stone fences sang cheerful melodies as another day began. Oakhaven never woke in a hurry. It stretched. It breathed. It smiled. People opened their windows to let the morning air inside. Curtains fluttered gently in the breeze as neighbors waved to one another from their front gardens. "Morning, Mrs. Collins!" "Good morning, dear." "How's your husband feeling today?" "Much better, thank you." Across the street, an elderly man watered a row of colorful flowers while a little girl carefully rode her bicycle under the watchful eyes of her father. A golden retriever chased a bright red ball through a nearby park, its joyful bark echoing across the grass. Everything felt peaceful. Everything felt familiar. At the heart of town stood Oakhaven's oldest landmark—the great clock tower. Its stone walls had weathered countless storms, yet it still stood proudly above the town square, keeping time as it always had. When the clock's hands reached seven, the bell rang. Dong... The sound rolled gently across Oakhaven. It echoed over rooftops. Across the calm surface of the lake. Past Oakhaven Academy, where gardeners trimmed hedges before students arrived. Then the sound reached Moonshade Forest. The towering trees stood perfectly still. The wind faded. For the briefest moment, the forest seemed to be listening. Then the birds began singing again, and life continued as though nothing had happened. No one in town noticed. No one ever did. Three streets away, nestled between two magnificent oak trees, stood a warm cream-colored house with ivy climbing its porch columns. Inside, sunlight spilled through a bedroom window and settled across a neatly made bed. Kenna slowly opened her eyes. She blinked twice before smiling to herself. The first day of a new school term had finally arrived. She stretched beneath her blanket, listening to the peaceful sounds around her. Birdsong. The gentle rustling of leaves outside. The faint clatter of dishes downstairs. Her mother was already awake. Kenna climbed out of bed and padded across the wooden floor toward her window. With one smooth motion, she pulled the curtains open. The view never failed to make her smile. She could see the tops of the oak trees dancing softly in the morning breeze. Beyond them lay the sparkling lake, reflecting the pale blue sky like polished glass. Farther still... Moonshade Forest rose above everything else. The ancient trees stood tall and silent, their dark green leaves hiding whatever secrets lay within. Most people admired the forest from a distance. Few ever wandered deep inside it. Kenna wasn't afraid of Moonshade Forest. She had simply never found a reason to explore it. Yet for reasons she couldn't explain, she found herself looking toward it every morning. Almost as though... It was waiting. She shook the strange thought from her mind. "I'm imagining things," she whispered with a small laugh. Turning away from the window, she walked toward the mirror hanging beside her wardrobe. A girl with bright blue eyes smiled back at her. Her black afro framed her golden-brown face beautifully, though a few curls had escaped during the night and refused to cooperate. Kenna gently patted them into place before laughing. "Nice try." She slipped on her Oakhaven Academy uniform—a crisp white shirt beneath a forest-green sweater, a navy skirt, knee-high socks, and polished black shoes. Once she had packed her books into her backpack, she picked up the framed photograph resting on her desk. It showed her and her mother standing beside the lake during last year's Lantern Evening celebration. Mrs. Amy had one arm wrapped around Kenna while both of them laughed at something outside the picture. Kenna smiled warmly. "I hope this year's even better." She carefully placed the photograph back on the desk before leaving her room. The smell of breakfast greeted her halfway down the stairs. It smelled like home.
