Chapter 1
So tired. Always tired. Having to deal with a million things, with school being the cherry on top. Faking faces and reality just enough to tring to make it to adulthood. Carter arose from her covers, still fantasizing over her future business success with the hopes she could regain her dad’s position in the family. Turning off the alarm she got out of bed, went to the one wardrobe, and waded through all the family’s clothing; a thick mass of clothes that overwhelmed the wardrobe. Dad’s dress shirts, pants, and big heeled boots. She had put on the clothes, she adjusted it to fit her. Tucking in her shirt and rolling the bottom of her pants and shirt sleeves methodically, so that it looked like the clothes were sizes just for her. Then placing the boots onto her feet to give her height, like she read in an article called ‘The Way to Greatness’. “Statistics show that just being taller than the person you’re discussing business with would enhance your chances of them complying with your proposals,” she recalled the magazine. Carter isn’t the type of person to just take anything at face value, especially articles, without doing any sort of research. But this time around Carter felt like the worst thing that would happen is someone commenting on her tacky boots that don’t go with her outfit. After tying the last knot, Carter grabbed one of the many hair ties and did the last finishing touches. She carefully rakes her finger through her red hair, straightening any stragglers, which finished the look. She went and woke up her brother, who was only 13 months younger. When up, he groaned and grizzled when changing and eventually finished getting ready. When picked up by the bus, they never talk to each other. Both have a mutual understanding that they mind their own business and they’ll get along just fine. They both had their own friend groups with completely different ideals, and neither of them were going to ruin it for the other. When picked up by the bus, they never talk to each other. With a mutual understanding that they mind their own business which created a peaceful silence. Once off the bus, Cartor goes to her locker and meets up with her BFF, Tristah McLane. They normally go get something to eat with Tristah’s allowance then leave ;lllllllloto class, but today they decided to eat in the Lunchroom. After going through the breakfast line they sit outside. They talk about all sorts of things like how much math sucks and complaining about the heavy amounts of work they are given in History. Then Tristah started to mumble, as if she was distracted. Carter looked in the direction she was and her eyes landed on a group of Ratts,”Trish? Are you seriously crushing on a Ratt?” Tristsh seems to snap out of her glossy-eye state,”No!”. A crush on a Ratt, but an Exceptis, well.” Carter was confused. She looked back again and saw her brother. She must’ve not noticed him before because of how well she had trained her brain,”I don’t see one?” Tristah looked sourly at Carter,”You don’t know Tyson Conners?” Carter tried to contain herself, she didn’t like to seem dumb, but for her furture bussiness her status is important. If anyone were to know Tyson was her relative and hung out with rats her life would be over. But she had to hand it to him, using his mother’s maiden name was smart. ”Isn't he in 8th grade?” Tristah threw a dirty look at her again,”No, in fact, he’s 9th.” she said in an up standish tone,”Do you have something against him.” This time Carter is the one who threw an annoyed look at Tristah,”He’s my brother.” is what she wanted to say, but in the long run. That response would only cause her issues,”Look at who he hangs out with.” Tristah just goes back to staring with goo goo eyes at Tyson,”Ya, but he’s an Exceptis. He can be changed into a Katt, you’re an Exeptis and you're not just doomed to live like the Ratts. So he isn’t either.” She has a point, even though Carter didn’t want to admit it. As an Exeptis, in the gray area in the class system. You really have more options than any of the other classes. You are not as disrespected like a Ratt and you aren’t born into a family that passes on to you their permanent highended jobs like Kats.  They both go to class saying goodbye, then Carter goes to sit at her desk in the back of the class. She listens to the teacher and writes notes for all the classes of the day, basically using up the whole desk with her coloring utensils and books. Then at the time of 3:25, without fail, Roi Finnhawk walks in,  to his desk without the teacher ever pausing to acknowledge the fact he’s hours late. Plopping into his seat and relaxing, just waiting for the bell to release him. The bell sounds and the kids disburse onto the bus and into the streets. Carter, as always waits behind to ask the teacher questions about the lesson and then meets Tristah out in the hall to say goodbye. “There’s a party tonight, wanna come?” Carter didn't want to be rude, but a party could end up like a spot on her record and one day of sleeping through school could be worse,”I would love to but we have school tomorrow.” “Carry, tomorrow is mainly a review of the school rules. Come on.” Carter walked onto the bus, but not before yelling,”I’ll think about it.”
