One~The Cheating Wife
“You miserable cheat!” I heard from the living room, and it came with a loud slam of the door. So loud that it was enough to wake up the dead.
“Where is she?! Where is Diana?!” He barked.
From upstairs, I heard him. Kane, my husband. I was packing his surprise gift but the moment I heard him, the excitement in my stomach swelled instantly.
I left everything behind and ran down to meet him.
“Baby…”
“You f*****g cheat!" He yelled at me. I thought I misheard him while I was in my room but clearly, I wasn't. He said it again and it rang loud and clear.
I blinked, “what?”
He scoffed, something about it made me uneasy.
“You heard me, Mrs Diana Gilbert. You are a f*****g cheat and a liar!”
The room swamped with low whispers and for a moment, I had forgotten that I had invited people to celebrate with us. My skin rose with goosebumps, this wasn't how I had planned our anniversary night to go.
My beloved husband stood right at the center of the room, calling me a cheat. Not just any kind of cheat but a miserable one right in front of everyone.
The excitement that filled me up from the sound of his voice, died with the unease. It was replaced with the urge to run to the backyard and throw up.
I had made him walk into our home that was decorated with rose petals, candles and glittering lights, only to get called a cheat right under them.
On the night of our anniversary.
From the bottom of the stairs where I stood, I saw him fume in a way that I had never seen before. Kane had never acted like that, not even to anyone I know.
He turned to the guests in the room, and roared.
“Now, all of you get out!”
I watched in shock as they scrambled to the door, in an attempt to run away from Kane’s wrath.
But for me, it was the beginning of a pending doom, the house was quickly empty with just the two of us.
He seized an envelope in his hands, it was tightly squeezed like it could get ripped in half by just being under his grip.
“How dare you?!” He growled as he slowly walked towards me.
Every step reeked of unstoppable rage and contempt. Things that I couldn't understand, and anger that felt like it had been lingering for too long.
I remained the silent wife so I waited until he was standing right in front of me, face to face.
“Babe, it's our anniversary night and I understand that you might be stressed about work but I already promised to take care of everything.” I murmured in between gritted teeth, a tight-lipped smile on my lips, hiding how embarrassed I was.
But he didn't stop. He picked the glass rose bouquet from the table, one that I had personally handpicked for him and sent them smashing to the wall.
“What has gotten into you?” I asked, my words came out in gasps. My heart had begun to race rapidly.
“After everything I have done for you, Diana….”
“Kane, I don't even know what you're talking about. Did you look around you for even a minute?" I implored, hoping he'd cool off and take a quick glance at what I had set up for him.
But instead, he slammed his fists into the wall behind me, causing me to shake terribly. His eyes were dark, and filled with something dangerous.
It was evil and, hell, I didn't know what buttons to press to get it out of him.
He smirked, dropped his bag and started unwrapping the envelope in my presence, “you low-life harlot, you still have the guts to pretend!!”
Before the right words could get to my tongue and out of my mouth, Kane flung pictures in my face.
I watched them fall to the ground and looked back at Kane like I needed answers.
“What’s going on? What are these?” I questioned him as I motioned to pick up the scattered photos on the floor.
His brows scrunched up in disgust, he glared at me like I was the most disgusting thing he had ever seen.
“Why don't you take a look and find out?”
I met the shock of my life. There in my hands were captured moments of me in bed with a mysterious man. Confusion threatened to throw me over the cliff as I darted from one photo to another.
Hot tears were beginning to build up, it was insane.
I panicked, “where did you get these? Who sent them to you?!” It was my turn to scream, and I didn't care how loud I was this time.
“Obviously you and your mystery man.”
Mystery man? Five years with Kane Sinclair and the only mystery man I had ever known was him.
“Kane, I swear I don't know what this is about! This is a huge misconception, that's not me!”
But my darling husband only laughed at me. He walked past me up the stairs, causing me to fall. Not for a second did he look back at me, he kept marching his way up the stairs.
Within minutes, he came down with some papers in his hands, and handed them over to me.
They were divorce papers. f*****g divorce papers.
One minute I'm fighting for my marriage, and my life. Next, my husband is handing me divorce papers without a chance to hear me out.
I gasped, “you’ve always had this in our room together? For how long Kane?” My voice trembled from shallow breaths.
Kane’s eyes shifted. They couldn't hold mine anymore so they began to flicker, that proved the truth I had feared the most.
Right under the very roof we lived in, I had been living with a man with a lie. All those five years clearly meant nothing for him to be able to hide divorce papers in the room we both shared.
“You’ll have to leave, Diana. I can't stand your presence, especially after what you did—”
“I didn't cheat, I would never cheat on you! God knows I love you so much to ever think of that!" I cried, my cracking voice could no longer hide itself.
Anything, I would take any stab to the back but cheating on my husband, I could never do that. I was no longer the silent wife. I was desperate, and needed to save my marriage.
While Kane seemed eager to throw me out his house, I fell to my knees, like a slave that was begging for her life.
“Kane, believe me. I would never do this to you! I didn't do this, I swear, please.” I pleaded, my hands clasped his legs, not ever wanting to let go of them.
“What would people think when they find out that Mrs Kane was caught cheating on her husband, not just any husband but the one who brought her out of her misery and made her who she is, huh?”
Who ever told me that he would listen? No one. There was nothing I had said that was enough to prove my innocence.
Instead he said, “This is going to be really quick. You will sign the divorce papers, leave my house and we won't have to worry about getting your image tainted or anything like that—”
“Kane, it doesn't have to be like this. I can prove that I didn't do this because I honestly didn't. I can't sign these papers"
Kane shaked his head, he didn't want to hear it. He wanted me out.
“Do you think people don't know already? Sign this and I won't have to paint you as an unfaithful wife. Like I said, it will be quick and you won't remember what happened. Come on, stop wasting both our time”
He slid a pen into my trembling fingers, and held out the divorce papers in my face again.
With shaking breaths, I signed the papers. My face was hot with tears, I couldn't believe what I had just done.
“Don’t worry, I'll ask Raymond to drop you off at your private villa so you don't get to face the press, if there's any.” he calmly said, and began walking me to the door.
My heart pounded hastily like it could explode in its ribcage.
I tried again, “Kane…please. We really don't have to do this, I'm begging you.”
But just like he was earlier, there was no atom of sympathy written on him. No emotion at all.
“Quick and painless Diana. I really hope I don't get to see your face again." He walked me out and went back inside like he hadn't broken my heart.
Like he hadn't just sent me out of our home. Our marriage.
Outside, as I waited for Raymond to get me to the car, I noticed lights flickering in the distance. Scandals in Vellacourt are always messy, and I didn't think I'd be the next trending wife. My life's
about to get ruined.
