A New Dawn
The club was alive, a wild mix of flashing lights, thumping bass, and hushed conversations that held secrets worth a fortune. I really shouldn’t have been here. This wasn’t my scene. This wasn’t his world I was meant to step into. Yet, here I stood—dressed in a sleek black dress that hugged my curves just right, my fingers wrapped around a champagne flute I had no plans to sip from. The air was thick with the scent of pricey cologne, cigar smoke, and the allure of temptations I wasn’t sure I was ready to face. I should have turned around the moment I walked into Inferno, the city’s most exclusive club—owned by none other than Lucian DeLuca. A name that echoed with both wealth and intimidation. He wasn’t just a billionaire. He was the kind of man who set the rules—the one who didn’t bow to anyone because he was the one holding all the cards. A king reigning over a realm that thrived in darkness. And now, his eyes were fixed on me. From across the dimly lit VIP area, surrounded by sharply dressed men and women draped in high-end fashion, Lucian DeLuca was watching me. He was power personified—broad shoulders clad in a perfectly tailored black suit, dark hair styled just enough to look effortlessly tousled, as if he’d run his fingers through it a few too many times. But it was his eyes that truly ensnared me. Chilling. Calculating. A predator sizing up his prey. I should have looked away. I should have turned on my heel and walked out before I became just another victim in his world. But instead, I did the one thing I knew I’d come to regret. I held his gaze. Something flickered in his expression—was it amusement? Interest? Either way, it felt perilous. He raised a hand, curled his fingers, inviting me closer. Come. I hesitated for just a heartbeat. The club throbbed around me, bodies pressed together, laughter and soft whispers filling the air. My heart raced as I forced myself to take a deep breath. I could still walk away. I could pretend I hadn’t seen him, that I hadn’t felt that unspoken command brush against my skin. With an edge sharp enough to cut, he took his time studying me, his gaze lingering on every inch as if he were trying to memorize me. My heart raced. "Do you know who I am?" "Yes," I replied without a moment's pause. He smirked. "And yet, you came." I raised my chin defiantly. "You called me over." A soft chuckle escaped him, rich and layered with something I couldn’t quite identify. He reached out, his fingers brushing against the inside of my wrist. It was a light touch, but it sent a jolt of electricity coursing through me. His thumb grazed the delicate chain bracelet I wore—a simple piece, yet it suddenly felt like a shackle under his touch. "You don’t belong here," he said. I swallowed hard, trying to ignore the heat radiating from where he touched me. "Neither do you." That earned me another low chuckle, though his grip tightened just a bit. "Tell me, Elena," he murmured, his voice smooth like silk but edged with steel. "Did you come looking for trouble, or did trouble find you?" His words sent a shiver down my spine. He already knew my name. Of course, he did. Lucian DeLuca didn’t believe in coincidences. If he was talking to me, it was because he had already decided I was worth his time. And that? That was a dangerous game. "Maybe both," I replied. His expression darkened, the smirk fading from his lips. "Good answer." For a moment, we fell into silence. The world around us continued—music, laughter, the clinking of glasses—but it all faded into the background. "Sit," he commanded. It wasn’t a suggestion. I hesitated, just for a heartbeat. Then, I slid into the empty seat beside him. He studied me, his fingers still lazily brushing against my wrist before he finally let go. "You’re nervous." "No," I lied. His smirk returned, slow and knowing. "Liar." I exhaled sharply, turning my gaze toward the club, pretending I wasn’t acutely aware of him. But I was. Every fiber of my being felt it. "Why are you here, Elena?" His voice was softer now, but still held that dangerous edge. I turned to face him. "Would you believe me if I said it was a coincidence?” "No," he replied, his tone straightforward. I took a deep breath. Because it definitely wasn’t. I had come here tonight with a purpose. Not for him—at least, not initially. I was on the hunt for something, a truth buried under layers of secrets. A name had brought me here. A name tied to my past. But now, as I sat across from Lucian DeLuca, I realized I might have made a grave mistake. If he discovered the real reason I was here… He might never let me go. ______________________________________ [Lucian’s POV] She was on edge. She tried to mask it—sitting up straight, her face composed—but I noticed how her fingers gripped the glass she wasn’t even sipping from. I could see her chest rising and falling just a bit too quickly. I should have let her slip by. Should have let her pass like any other stranger in this club. But the moment I laid eyes on her, I knew. She didn’t fit in here. And yet, she had stepped right into my territory. Elena Carter. I already knew her name. Knew more about her than she likely suspected. And I could tell she was hiding something. She hadn’t come to Inferno just to have a good time. She was searching for something. Or someone. "Tell me," I said, keeping my voice smooth and unreadable. "Are you always this reckless?" She met my gaze, her expression hard to read. "Are you?" I chuckled, leaning back against the plush leather seat. This was intriguing. She wasn’t afraid to stand her ground. Most people—smart people—knew better than to challenge me. But Elena? She didn’t seem to care. Or maybe… she just didn’t grasp the kind of danger she was in. "I’d tread carefully, little dove," I murmured, watching her throat move at the nickname. "You’re playing a game you don’t fully understand." Her lips parted slightly, and for a fleeting moment, I caught a glimpse of the conflict in her eyes. The hesitation. And then—just like that—she concealed it. "You think this is a game?" she asked, tilting her head. I smirked. "I think you don’t realize the kind of danger you’re in.” Her breath caught in her throat. For a brief moment, the air between us buzzed with an electric tension. Something dark loomed. Something that felt unavoidable. She could have walked away. I could have let her slip through my fingers. But neither of us budged. Because deep down, we both understood… This was just the beginning.
