Chapter 1 – The Betrayal
People say betrayal feels like a stab to the chest. They’re wrong. It feels colder. It feels like scrolling through your phone at midnight and finding the picture that ruins your entire life. And just when the world should have ended for me, a voice cut through the wreckage. “You’re mine now, Kiera. The world will know it.” For three years, I had been Carlos’s girlfriend. He was my senior in university, the man I loved enough to imagine a lifetime with. Marriage, a home, even giving up my dreams to become a full-time housewife. I thought it was all worth it for him. The message arrived with the quiet hum of the evening — a digital knife wrapped in silk. My hands froze mid-scroll as the screen burned me with a single, devastating image: Carlos and Emily, in a booth at a club, their lips locked in a kiss that left no room for doubt. The caption beneath it was sharper than any blade: “Come to Club 91 if you want to know the truth.” A tremor ran through her, so violent it felt like a shuddering crack in her spine. This couldn’t be real. Just yesterday, he had been tracing the line of her hand, whispering about their future, about the house they would build, the family they would have. He had held her like she was the only thing that mattered. Her mind reeled, grasping for a rational explanation. A prank? A deepfake? A cruel joke? But as she stared at the intimate slant of his head and the proprietary way Emily was draped across his lap, the denial began to feel like a flimsy paper shield against a tidal wave. She had to see for herself. She had to prove them wrong. The cab ride was a blur of neon and blurred city lights. Every street corner, every flicker of a sign, felt like a silent, mocking witness. She remembered his first proposal, a six-carat diamond ring appearing as if by magic. She remembered his second, a whispered secret on graduation day: “Don’t tell anyone. This is our secret. I need to protect you from my enemies.” Now, the memory tasted like ash. All the overwhelming, all-consuming love he had given her felt less like a gift and more like a narcotic, designed to keep her dazed and compliant. When she arrived at Club 91, the pulsing beat of the music was a physical assault. She pushed through the crowd, her eyes scanning. She found them in a secluded booth, surrounded by three of his friends. Emily was on Carlos’s lap, her hand cupped at the back of his neck. Then she heard his voice, loud and careless, slicing through the noise like a razor blade. "The show's almost over," he said, the words a casual toss of a hand grenade. "It's not like she didn't enjoy my indulgence." Kiera stopped breathing. The air in her lungs felt like broken glass. She leaned against a wall, the cold plaster the only thing holding her up. She tried to disappear into the shadows, a ghost in her own life. James raised his glass, a cruel smirk playing on his lips. "So the three-year plan worked? Don’t tell me you actually grew to like the little campus princess." Carlos's laugh was a low, chilling sound, devoid of warmth or humor. It was a sound of absolute contempt. He leaned in conspiratorially. "Like her? She was a blank canvas. I told her what she wanted to hear, and she wrote a whole novel about it in her head. 'My one true love,' 'my savior'... the girl practically wrote her own script. It's almost too easy to manipulate someone who believes in fairy tales." He shrugged. "Easy prey. That’s all she ever was to me." James asked with evil smirk, “Now the most important question is, in those 3 years, have you fu*ked her yet?” “Don’t insult me. I wouldn’t touch her even if she begged. She kept going on about saving herself for marriage, anyway. I could’ve pushed it—but honestly, she disgusts me. Only Emily deserves my body.” Emily pressed a possessive kiss to his neck. "Carlos, you promised me you wouldn't touch her. That's why I agreed to this." He laughed again, a tight, low chuckle. "Why would I, when I have you? Kiera’s just a pawn in a game I already won." He tightened his arm around Emily’s waist, pulling her closer. "You're the one I’m marrying, remember? My heart belongs to you. But honey, it’s been a few days time since we last fu*ked, let’s do it tonight.” Emily smile shyly and pretend to push Carlos away. “Hey hey slow down you guys, we are still in the room please” James fake plead. Meanwhile, Kenny Jones, the quiet one among them, looked up in confusion. “I don’t understand, what are you guys talking about?” “Oh damn, that’s right,” James said with a snort. “This i***t missed the whole thing. He was away when we made the bet.” “What bet?” Kenny asked sharply, his brows furrowing. James leaned forward, his grin widening. “Carlos made a bet with me. Ten million dollars says he could get that country bumpkin so called campus belle, Kiera, to be his girlfriend in six months… and keep her for at least 3 years. Today’s the 3rd anniversary. Time to pay up.” James took out his phone to pay Carlos. Kenny stared at Carlos, stunned and confused. “Wait… you’re saying this whole relationship is… fake?” Carlos laughed coldly. “Of course. You think I’d ever fall for someone like her? Kiera’s just a poor, desperate girl who fell for a few kind words. Easy prey. That’s all she ever was to me.” “So… you never… loved her?” Kenny’s voice was barely above a whisper. “Love?” Carlos scoffed. Kenny clenched his fists under the table. He had grown up with Carlos, James, and Jason—but he had never liked how cruel they could be. His own family had raised him differently. With morals and most importantly, with a compassion and heart even if they are rich. Emily’s eyes snapped to Kenny, her smile vanishing. "Kenny, you probably don’t know, but she’s had a crush on Carlos ever since she entered the university. I was very generous to let her have his affection for three years. What more could she possibly want? She can’t be too greedy." Emily pushed a few tears from her eyes and looked down, feigning misery. Why is this stupid clown defending that slut? she thought, her expression hardening. Carlos chuckled and ran a hand lazily through her hair. "Honey, please calm down. You know my heart belongs only to you. There’s no need to get agitated for something he said. Kiera means nothing to me." Emily gave him an aggrieved look. "Did you really have no feeling for her? You didn't touch her behind my back, right?" Carlos smirked, tightening his arm around her waist. "Oh, please, honey. You’re the one I’m marrying, remember? I've never touched her like I promised, and my heart belongs only to you." "You bastard!" Kenny angrily spat, rising to his feet. "Kiera is a person, not a toy you can play with. You will regret this. Choosing a coal over a real diamond for the sake of a stupid bet is going to be your doom." Carlos’s face darkened, but Kenny didn’t back down. Emily felt a surge of rage, humiliated and furious. This clown should be defending me instead. There must be something going on with them... No! I can't let Kenny fall for that slut. Only I deserve to be loved by everyone! "You should be ashamed," Kenny said, his voice dropping to a low growl. "Kiera deserves to know who you really are. And if there’s even a shred of conscience left in you, you'll tell her yourself and release her from this twisted game. I'm done with you all!" He stormed off, disgusted. Carlos watched him go, a flicker of something—guilt?—crossing his expression. He didn’t understand it… but for the first time in a long while, he felt unsettled.
