Holding the letter, Anthony sat still, staring at it. He felt his cheeks wet and touched it to find his tears rolling down. This whole phenomenon of shedding tears was new to him.
He didn't shed tears when his parents fought, when they divorced and when finally they abandoned him, just at the age of 10. He didn't shed tears when his only friend Max and his family had to leave his neighborhood. Neither did he cry when he waited hopefully staring at the doorway of his house, expecting for his parents to suddenly turn up to wish him on his birthday. His only support was his care taker Mr Johnson and Max, who thankfully had attended the same school.
As he grew up, he started losing hopes on love and relationships. He made himself an invincible man by burying all his feelings and emotions. His only aim was to earn money and be on top of his game. But he was wrong in understanding himself. He didn't realize since when the emotions that he had well hidden deep inside, had started to resurface.
Maybe it resurfaced first time, when 8 years ago Sarah had thrown a surprise birthday party for him along with Max and their architecture batch mates. He was angry with Sarah and yelled at her and walked out of the party, humiliating her in front of their batch mates. But later that night he felt his heart being stung by a feeling of guilt. Whereas Sarah on the other hand ,was not a person to be stopped by such humiliations. She was as stubborn as a mule. She continued to throw birthday parties for him every year since then. Finally Anthony had to give up and allowed her to celebrate his birthday. He didn't realize until now that Sarah was the only person who had made him feel special.
As Anthony sat on the bed with an aching heart and teary eyes, suddenly he heard his phone ringing. Hoping it was a call from Sarah, he immediately received the call without looking at the id "Sarah. I love you Sarah".
"What? When did this happen?" came Max's voice from the other end.
Anthony hold his forehead with one hand and squeezed it as he spoke in despair "She left me Max. She left me. My Sarah left me."
Without responding back to Anthony, Max hang up the phone and rushed out from his office. He ignited his car and soon was out on the road. He was greatly worried after hearing Anthony's voice. He drove at the fastest speed he could but luck was not on his side. The streets of Boston were unbelievably crowded at that time of the evening owing to some protests against the petroleum leaders.
Max tried dialing Anthony's number but there was no answer. He cursed loudly inside his closed windowed car "To hell with this protesters. They selected today's date to start this chaos. And what has gone wrong with Sarah now. c*m on God. My life sucks."
After two hours of being tortured by the insane traffic, finally Max reached Anthony's residence. He parked the car on the driveway and rushed through the garden. Normally whenever he visits Anthony's place, he stops by the garden to enjoy its view. But now he had no time to admire as he had an emergency to attend.
He barged inside and cried "Anthony" as he saw Anthony lying on the floor beside the living room sofa with two empty whiskey bottles lying near him. He rushed to him and saw Anthony lying on his stomach , eyes closed but tears running down from it. "Anthony" he shook his shoulder.
In an instant Anthony opened his eyes and the first word he uttered was "Sarah". He tried sitting up as he blabbered like a mad person " Sarah. You came back Sarah. Where are you Sarah?" His eyes searched for her.
Max was shocked to find Anthony in this state. He gently held Anthony's arms giving him support to sit in an upright position.
Anthony looked at Max with desperate eyes and repeated again "Where is Sarah Max? Where is my wife? I want her Max. I cannot live without her Max. Please." he wept like a lost child holding Max's hand.
Max was too overwhelmed to see the emotional side of Anthony. He tried to console Anthony in a gentle voice " She will come Anthony. Your Sarah will come."
"Nooo, you are lying. She left me. She left this bastard of a husband. Now she wont come back even if I die" Anthony cried.
"Shut up Anthony. No one dies as long as Max is there. Get up now. Lets put you to bed" Max scolded him. He too was new to this situation. In fact Max had never imagined to find Anthony in such a breaking state.
"No, i will wait here for Sarah. What if she comes and goes back if she finds me in a sleeping state. No I will stay here" Anthony replied like a stubborn kid.
Max felt both angry and pity at the same time. He coaxed Anthony "But if she finds you in such a disheveled state, she still might go back. So trust me. Get some rest till Sarah arrives. I promise I will sit here and wait for her. As soon as she comes, I will wake you up. O.K?
Anthony looked at Max with hopeful eyes and asked "Promise Max. Will you wait for her ?"
Max exhaled deeply and replied "I promise you, my friend, I will bring your wife back to you". Though he said to convince Anthony to get some sleep, at heart he realized that bringing back Sarah into Anthony's life wont be easy this time.
Anthony gave Max a brotherly hug and said in relief "I trust you brother."
Max helped Anthony to stand up and held him tightly as they climbed the steps towards Anthony's bedroom. Max made him sit down on the bed and removed his shoes and tie. He made Anthony lie on the mattress and covered him with a duvet, as though Anthony was a small child.
"Goodnight Anthony. Sleep now."Max wished him.
But instead Anthony asked in a sad tone "Will Sarah ever come back to me?"
Max smiled and replied " Of course she will" he paused and added "She has to" he reassured both to Anthony as well as himself.
