"Guess who?" Said a girl with ash-brown short strands of hair that don't even reach to her neck...
She was covering Elle's eyes.
"... Amy? C'mon stop it!" Elle who had to stop half-way in her usual road to Lake Wood high-school, took off her friend's hands and hurried her steps.
"Ellie... Take it easy!" Called the girl who was just given the cold shoulder, "Mr. Brook never does the attendance call, and you've never been a fan of History... What's the rush for? It's still too early anyway..."
Elle never took a halt, in fact she was rushing so that her bestie doesn't see the playful smile on her face... She really loved her one and only friend, she enjoyed teasing her and insisting on her well-being.
"Evie!" She lectured her with the strict tone she barely managed to put on, "Do you remember what happened the last time we came back late and Mrs. Murphy had to call for your guardian?"
"Argh!" Goosebumbs spread all over Evegenia, "Didn't we make that topic a taboo?! Sh*t, I don't wanna remember my month of living hell!"
Remembering Mrs. Waltz, Evie's mother's terrifying face as she just left Mrs. Murphy's office gave Elle a laugh. They were seriously the worst combo ever!
"But still..." Evegenia pulled Elle's hand, "Wanna sleep at my house?"
Her eyes filled with utter shock and bewilderment, Elle knew that her best friend crossed the red line...
In fact she wasn't angry at her... She was rather angry of what would happen to her if that really happened.
Someone as great as her Evie should never get involved with her "family"... She lost to her affection, and made sacrifices by letting her get closer to her. Yet she knew, she'll have to restrain herself from getting any closer... She wouldn't bear to lose her.
"Just kidding!" Those words came out of Evegenia's mouth and put an end to Elle's dilemma.
The cheeky smile soon faded as the girl threw herself at her best friend and buried her head in her shoulders.
"... Evie?" Asked the girl after a while as she was surprised by the sudden act,"what's wrong?"
Eve's answer came out in a soft whisper, too soft yet seccessfully reached Elle's ears.
"...I think I'm in love..."
That was the answer that made Elle confused all the way more, she was clueless as feelings... She always heard the word, but never really knew what "love" felt like?
To her, it was something like how she feels towards Evie, her uncle, maybe she loves her father too... But no, that wasn't love, and she knew it wasn't what her friend meant.
"Who is it?" She whispered back as her hands reached to her friend's back, patting on her in a loving way.
After that simple question, silence fell between the two girls, Evegenia had to pull herself out and look at her bestie's eyes.
Somehow Elle saw something she's never seen in her friend's eyes before, her usual cheekiness and playfulness were nowhere to be found as some u explicable feelings took place instead... A mix of sadness, confusion and irresolution, and some other feelings she couldn't distinguish at all...
"I've been in love with this person for three years..." Confessed the girl after letting out a sigh, "... And from the first sight."
"Evegenia Waltz, answer my question!" Elle was more curious than ever about that person's identity, a specially that her friend never really acted as mysterious before.
Biting on her lip and breaking the eye-contact, Evegenia had to eventually drop the bomb, "It's Ace... Ace McQueen!"
"What?" Elle was over herself with bewilderment, "Are you kidding me? Who on earth falls for Ace McQueen?!"
Evegenia shook her head and confirmed, "It's no joke Ellie... How can I be joking about this topic?"
"But he's a playboy! He has already failed his senior year three times! God knows how many girls he made pregnant! He has literally dated every girl in this f*cking high-school!"
"But he hadn't dated neither of us..." Evie, as Elle calls her, couldn't let go of her cheeky jokes, and then soon want back to her serious-mood, "I don't know my girl... I don't know how it happened but... That's love!"
Elle gave another glance at her best friend's helpless face, with a faint smile, meant to cheer her up, she went straight to the main point, "Does he know?"
"No."
"Are you planning a confession?"
"Maybe... Yes."
"are you sure?"
"..." It took her a while to gather her courage, "...Yes."
A weak smile submerged upon her face... As she took the initiative this time to hug her one and only friend.
It never crossed her mind that this would be her last time hugging her dearest Evie... And if she knew, she'd never break the hug, she'd never let go of her...
She would stop her by any means. Even if it meant breaking this friendship...
She regretted not skipping classes with her this once... She regretted the fact that she never tried, to spend more time with her dearest Evie...
*Ding*
The sound of a phone notification surprised Elle... She was doing the tons of homework she had and totally forgot about the time that quickly flew by... Looking at the setting sun from her bedroom's balcony, she knew it had been at least 3 hours already.
Taking her phone to check for the notification, it was a message from Evegenia.
Her smile froze by reading the content of this message, every word made her eyes turn even bigger with shock and horror.
She didn't even finish reading the entire message's content before rushing out of the house in her pajamas...
She couldn't care less about the cold as cool wind brushed upon her face and the light satin Fabrik of the white dress she was wearing.
Without even thinking twice, she went to the mansion's garage and hopped into the first car that first came upon her eyes.
She still didn't get a driving lisence and she never had the chance to try driving before, as in fact, her father would literally kill her if she touches any of his properties... But somehow in that situation, she found herself rushing with her father's Bugatti Chiron sportscar at 140km/h speed in the dark, deserted highway.
Remembering the message's second line, "... But now that I see the stars from this high in the sky..." she genuinely knew where to find her bestie.
"Evegenia!!!" She screamed with all the strength she had in her lungs, trying to catch her friend's attention.
She succeeded to stop the girl from moving... In fact, she was sitting on the edge of the roof of the 3rd floor of the high-school's building...which was in fact the tallest building in their small town, and it was the first place to come to her mind once she read her message.
"Come down... Evie, please don't do this..." She begged while gasping heavily for dear breath after a race with time and a chellenge with over two-hundred steps on the stairs.
Seeing as Evegenia showed signs of interest by standing up and turning around to face her, she got more courageous than ever and mastered the strength to put some even stronger words, "I'm begging you... Evie, come down and talk things over... Tell me what's wrong and everything will be better!..."
A sarcastic smile yet one full of sadness and a mix of madness was written on the corners of her mouth... Two words left her mouth, in a whisperish sorrowful tone yet empty eyes.
"... Too late... "
Followed by these two words, Elle's libms lost all strength as the figure of that girl left her eyesight...
She only took a step backward and let the wind take her away... Falling head over, with a sarcastic smile on the face, she gave birth to Elle's eternal traumas and haunting nightmares.
She didn't feel a thing, or maybe her senses were blocked as she was already dead the moment her body hit the ground... Her soul already flew away as the fall cracked her skull, mushed her brain and broke every bone in her tiny body...
She didn't want to but she was drowning in melancholy, losing her senses to the imagination of her Evie's body swimming in a pool of blood... And the only thing flushing in her eyes were the words she left, but she never managed to fully read...
Her phone's screen cracking, yet words flashing by at a never-seen-before speed... A speed that seemed so ethereal that everything became vivid like an opening third eye...
"... I've been thinking how boring this life is... But now that I see the stars from this high in the sky, I'm feeling so high I can't even breath... It makes me forget about my guilt of never being real. And somehow life feels less burdensome now that I'll never see you again... I'm sorry, Elle..."
Said those words that will never be heard again and with them died all the good memories of the sweet, sour past...
