1: At the Cliff
Nyssa's POV
“Mummy!” I heard my daughter scream from the phone. My eyes widened and I turned off the gas cooker immediately. “Mira, are you okay?”
“She's not,” the voice reached my ears, nothing like what my own daughter sounds like. “Five minutes. The Mere cliff. Make sure you bring the Alpha.”
And then the call went off. My wolf whimpered inside of me as my eyes almost popped out of their sockets while my brain reprocessed the whole conversation.
Five minutes. And I should bring the Alpha.
Mira has been taken!
I dashed out of the kitchen, colliding with one of the maids. “Luna! Aren't you making Alpha's favourite broth soup anymore?”
“Mira!” My tears spilled as my eyes darted around, my brain suddenly forgetting the exit. “Mira has been taken!”
“Get the guards!” I screamed as I reached towards the entrance. “They're at the mere cliff! Tell them to come!”
“They can't!” The maid screamed after me. “They are not here!”
I paused in my steps and whipped my head to her. “What do you mean?”
“The Alpha got a call minutes ago! He went out with every single soldier!”
“Get a call across to them. Tell them Mira has been taken! They need to come,” I cried and dashed out of the house. I ignited my car's engine the minute I got in and accelerated towards the cliff.
As I drove, I fumbled with my phone, before I finally clicked on my husband, Alpha Corvin's number. I dialled it, my heart rate erratic as I tried to keep my eyes on the road.
The call rang and tears pooled behind my eyes.
“Not today, Alpha,” I whispered as the first call ended. I dialled it again, my hands trembling. “Corvin, please pick up.”
He couldn't do what he has always done to me. He couldn't refuse my call again today. For five years that we've been married, I was still never a priority to this Alpha.
But not today.
Our baby was in danger.
The call dropped and my tears started spilling as I dialled it again. “Corvin.”
Then he picked.
“Oh my!” I gasped as I struggled to let my eyes stay on the road. “Alpha, Mira has been taken. They took her to a cliff. They want you there. Please come.”
“Another one of your tactics,” Corvin snarled over the phone, his voice the same emotionless voice he always used with me. “Get over your need for attention, Nyssa.”
Need for attention.
My lips trembled as I watched the call drop. He ended the call because he thought this was me trying to get his attention. Why would I ever joke with my own daughter's life just for his attention?
I sniffed, wiping my tears before fumbling my fingers over the phone and found Corvin’s message. Then I did a voice note.
“This is not a call for attention, Corvin. Mira has been taken. They gave me five minutes. She has been taken to the cliff and they want you to come.” I hit send watching as Corvin viewed the message almost immediately.
“Type it out, Nyssa. I don't have all the time in the world,” his message reached my phone.
My tears poured. A thirty second voice note and he still couldn't spare that for me. My heart clenched as I grabbed the phone, trying to find the characters as I put the words together.
Then I hit send.
I didn't wait to check for Corvin's reply when I reached the mountain. I got out of the car, my eyes darting around. There was no way for a car to pass now.
I had to use my leg.
“Anybody there!” I screamed as I raced toward the cliff. “Is anybody there?” I paused as I reached the steep of the cliff, sweat breaking out on my forehead. “Anybody —”
“I don't see Corvin.” The voice reached my ears and I turned. There, a man stood, holding onto a rope. My eyes widened as I looked forward and there Mira was, the ropes binding her hands, and suspending her over the steep cliff.
“Mira!” I screamed and rushed forward when the man stretched out a hand.
“One wrong move and I throw this off the cliff!” He beckoned at the ropes and I shook my head instantly.
“No… no… please no, do not hurt my baby. Please.”
“Corvin,” the man started again. “Where's he?”
I crashed to my knees, the rocks biting into my skin. “He wouldn't come,” my voice cracked. “The Alpha wouldn't come.”
Because he has never done. He has never cared about me. For five years of marriage, I was still nothing to him even though I was the Luna of his pack.
He never saw me for anything more than that.
“Call him!” The man gritted. “Or I throw your baby off the cliff,” he pulled the ropes and Mira let out a scream as she stumbled forward.
“Mummy!”
“No!” I cried as my hands trembled around the phone. “I'll call him. Please don't hurt my baby. Please.” I cried and my fingers found Corvin's number.
He picked almost immediately. “Not again, Nyssa! What the f**k do you want?”
“He's going to throw her off,” I cried as I held the phone to my chest. “Please come to Mere cliff else Mira is going to die.”
“Shame on you, Nyssa. For using Mira for attention.” Corvin's voice reached my ears as the call ended.
The attacker scoffed and turned to Mira. “One last try. Send a picture.”
I snapped the picture even as my fingers trembled and sent it to Corvin. He replied at once.
“Nice editing. I have more important things to do.”
“Tsk, tsk,” the attacker rolled his eyes. “Even the Alpha doesn't care about his own family,” he ran his eyes around. “What a waste of time.”
“Please,” I crawled on the cliff, my fingers clasped together. “Let my daughter go.”
“No,” I watched as the man's lips raised. “I won't.” And then with a cruel smirk, he tossed the ropes in his hands downwards.
“No!” I screamed as Mira fell backward with the absence of the force holding her. She let out a scream, the ropes whirring as they descended.
I got to my feet and threw myself forward, catching the rope before all of it fell into the abyss.
“Mummy!” Mira screamed and I let out a gasp, my fingers barely wrapping around the rope.
“I got you,” a tear rolled down my eyes as I held the rope tighter. “Mum has got you, baby.”
