THE LUNA WHO WASN'T CHOSEN
Seraphina knew something was wrong when Kael stopped breathing.
One moment, the Alpha of the Blackridge Pack stood beside her beneath a ceiling of silver lanterns, accepting congratulations from neighboring Alphas.
The next, his entire body went still.
Seraphina followed his gaze.
And watched her life begin to fall apart.
A woman stood at the entrance of the Moon-Blessing Hall.
She was young.
Beautiful in the effortless way some women were beautiful enough to make other people resent mirrors. Long pale hair spilled over the shoulders of her dark gown, and her gray eyes moved uncertainly across the crowded hall.
Then they landed on Kael.
The stranger inhaled sharply.
Kael's hand slipped from Seraphina's waist.
Not dramatically.
Not enough for anyone unfamiliar with him to notice.
But Seraphina had spent twenty years learning every movement of the man beside her.
She noticed.
Her wolf noticed too.
No.
The voice inside her mind was small.
Terrified.
Seraphina swallowed.
Don't.
But the scent had already reached her.
Wild jasmine.
Rain.
And something ancient beneath it.
The unmistakable scent of a mate bond.
Around them, conversations began to die.
One by one.
Like candles being extinguished.
Kael took a step forward.
Seraphina's fingers tightened around the stem of her wineglass.
"Kael."
He didn't hear her.
Or perhaps he did.
Perhaps that was worse.
The woman at the entrance looked just as shocked as he did. Her hand rose to her chest.
A soft gasp escaped her.
"No."
Kael moved again.
This time, Seraphina caught his wrist.
His eyes finally shifted toward her.
For twenty years, those dark eyes had been home.
Tonight, they looked like a locked door.
"Don't," she whispered.
His jaw tightened.
The entire room was watching.
Seraphina could feel it.
The curiosity.
The confusion.
The slow, terrible understanding moving through wolves who had lived long enough to recognize what was happening.
Second mates were rare.
Almost mythical.
But not impossible.
And apparently, neither was watching your husband discover one in the middle of a celebration.
"Seraphina." Kael's voice was low.
She hated the carefulness in it.
That carefulness belonged in meetings with hostile Alphas and negotiations with enemies.
Not here.
Not between them.
She forced a smile.
It was the smile she had perfected as Luna.
The one that told everyone nothing was wrong when everything was.
"You should introduce me."
Kael stared at her.
Her heart was beating too loudly.
Across the room, the stranger looked ready to run.
Seraphina almost envied her.
Almost.
Then Kael gently removed her hand from his wrist.
And walked away.
The glass nearly slipped from Seraphina's fingers.
She remained where she was.
Because she was Luna.
Because hundreds of wolves were watching.
Because she had spent too many years standing beside Kael Draven to collapse simply because the Moon Goddess had decided their marriage needed an audience.
Kael stopped in front of the stranger.
Neither spoke.
The silence stretched.
Then the woman's eyes filled with tears.
"I didn't know," she whispered.
Seraphina heard her anyway.
Every wolf in the room probably did.
Kael's wolf was pushing against him.
Seraphina could see it in the tension of his shoulders.
His control had always been frightening.
Tonight, it looked fragile.
"What's your name?" Kael asked.
"Lyra."
The name settled into Seraphina's chest like ice.
"Lyra Veyne."
Kael closed his eyes.
For one terrible second.
Then he opened them.
And Seraphina understood.
Not because he said anything.
Because she had loved him long enough to know his face.
He believed it.
He believed the woman standing before him belonged to him.
The same way Seraphina once had.
Someone moved beside Seraphina.
Elder Rowan.
His expression was carefully neutral, which meant he was terrified.
"Your Luna—"
"Don't."
The old wolf stopped.
Seraphina kept her eyes on Kael.
"Not one word."
Elder Rowan bowed his head.
The Moon-Blessing Hall had become unbearably quiet.
Kael finally turned.
His gaze searched the room until it found Seraphina.
For the first time that night, he looked uncertain.
Good.
She wanted him uncertain.
She wanted him uncomfortable.
She wanted him to feel one fraction of the horror currently clawing through her chest.
He approached slowly.
Lyra followed.
Of course she did.
Seraphina straightened her shoulders.
Kael stopped in front of her.
"Seraphina."
She waited.
His throat moved.
"I—"
Nothing.
A laugh almost escaped her.
Twenty years.
Twenty years of marriage, war, rebuilding, bloodshed, celebrations, grief, and promises.
And suddenly, the great Alpha Kael Draven couldn't find a sentence.
So Seraphina helped him.
"She's your mate."
The color drained from Lyra's face.
Kael didn't answer.
Seraphina tilted her head.
"That wasn't a question."
His silence lasted one heartbeat too long.
"Yes."
Something inside her broke.
Quietly.
No one heard it.
No one saw it.
Seraphina was proud of that.
Her wolf, however, whimpered inside her mind.
He can't have another.
Seraphina wished she could explain the rules of the world to her wolf.
She wished she understood them herself.
Kael reached for her hand.
She moved it behind her back.
His fingers closed around empty air.
A tiny movement.
Almost nothing.
But Kael noticed.
His expression hardened with pain.
That nearly made her angry.
He did not get to look wounded.
Not yet.
Not when she was still trying to remember how to breathe.
"Seraphina," he began again, "this doesn't change what we have."
There it was.
The first lie.
She looked down at the hand he had reached for.
Then back at his face.
"It happened less than five minutes ago."
His brows pulled together.
"And already you're promising me nothing will change?"
"I love you."
The words came quickly.
Too quickly.
As though he had been waiting for the opportunity to defend himself.
Seraphina's smile returned.
This one felt sharp.
"I know."
Kael's eyes darkened.
That wasn't the response he wanted.
She knew him well enough to recognize that too.
Lyra stood beside him, silent and pale.
Seraphina looked at her properly.
The girl couldn't have been more than half Seraphina's age by wolf standards.
There was fear in her face.
Genuine fear.
For a moment, Seraphina almost felt sorry for her.
Then Lyra's eyes moved toward Kael.
And softened.
The pity died.
Because Seraphina knew that look.
She had worn it herself.
Kael stepped closer.
"Can we speak privately?"
The request was almost laughable.
They had spent years being unable to get five minutes alone without someone needing their Alpha.
Now privacy suddenly mattered.
Seraphina glanced around the hall.
Every guest had become very interested in their wine.
Cowards.
"Of course."
She handed her untouched glass to Elder Rowan.
Then she turned toward the doors.
Kael followed.
Lyra took a step too.
Seraphina stopped.
Slowly, she looked over her shoulder.
Lyra froze.
For the first time that evening, Seraphina allowed the full weight of her position into her voice.
"This conversation is between my husband and me."
The words landed heavily.
Lyra's cheeks flushed.
Kael looked uncomfortable.
Excellent.
Seraphina walked away.
The private corridor beyond the hall was lined with black stone and moonlit windows. Her heels struck the floor with measured precision.
She didn't slow until the music disappeared behind them.
Then she turned.
Kael stopped several feet away.
Distance.
Already.
"What are you thinking?" he asked.
Seraphina stared at him.
Of all the questions.
She folded her arms.
"I'm thinking the Moon Goddess has a cruel sense of humor."
His expression tightened.
"Don't do that."
"Do what?"
"Make jokes when you're angry."
A bitter laugh escaped her.
"After twenty years, you finally know something about me."
"Seraphina."
"No." She raised a hand. "You wanted privacy.
You have it. So let's try honesty for once."
His eyes flashed.
"That's unfair."
"Is it?"
The silence returned.
This time, neither of them wanted to fill it.
Seraphina looked at the man she had loved for most of her adult life.
The man who had once crossed three territories to bring her home after a diplomatic meeting turned dangerous.
The man who had held her through nightmares.
The man whose heartbeat she could recognize in a crowded battlefield.
And she hated herself for still loving him.
That was the cruelest part.
The bond didn't disappear because your heart was humiliated.
"What happens now?" she asked.
Kael looked away.
Her stomach dropped.
Not because of the answer.
Because he had one.
"You've thought about it already."
"No."
"Then look at me."
He did.
Slowly.
Seraphina wished he hadn't.
There was guilt in his eyes.
Confusion.
Desire.
And beneath everything else, something that terrified her more than anger ever could.
Wonder.
He was wondering about Lyra.
Wondering what the new bond meant.
Wondering what could happen.
Seraphina felt suddenly cold.
Kael stepped forward.
"Nothing is changing tonight."
She almost smiled.
Not because it was funny.
Because apparently, he intended to keep lying until one of them believed him.
Then a voice called from the hall.
"Alpha Kael?"
Lyra.
Kael turned instinctively.
Just for a second.
That was all.
One second.
One instinctive movement toward another woman.
Seraphina watched it happen.
And something inside her finally became clear.
Kael had not chosen Lyra.
Not yet.
But his wolf already had.
And Seraphina had spent twenty years beside an Alpha.
She knew exactly how dangerous instincts could become when a man was powerful enough to mistake them for destiny.
Kael turned back toward her.
"Seraphina—"
She stepped away.
"Go to her."
His face changed.
"No."
"Go."
"I won't leave you like this."
The words should have comforted her.
Instead, they made her want to scream.
Because he was already standing in front of her.
Yet somehow, she had never felt more alone.
Seraphina looked toward the hall.
Then back at her husband.
"That's the problem, Kael."
His brows furrowed.
She gave him the saddest smile of her life.
"You already have."
She walked away before he could answer.
But she had barely reached the doors when Kael's voice stopped her.
"Seraphina."
Her hand rested against the cold metal handle.
She didn't turn.
Behind her, his silence stretched.
Then he whispered the words that would haunt the rest of the night.
"She's my mate."
Seraphina closed her eyes.
Inside her, her wolf began to cry.
And for the first time in twenty years, Seraphina wondered what it would feel like to stop being Kael Draven's Luna.
