Chapter 15

A year had passed and Klaus and I were happy. Well, as happy as a werewolf-witch couple could be with an insane mother always pestering you to break up with him. My entire family had learned about his secret by then and they had come to accept it. The only exception being my mother. After a few more months I started seeing less of Klaus. Then he disappeared completely. His family hadn’t seen him or his father in over a month. “I’m worried.” Harry, their younger brother sighed. “I know. But I’m sure Klaus and father are just fine,” James, another brother assured Harry. We were at the Grigori castle, all conversing over a cup of tea. “Klaus and father have never gone this long on a hunting trip before.” Krista, their sister sighed. “Especially since Klaus and Aria have been spending so much time together. It’s unlike him to go on this long without seeing her,” Elijah murmured. A faint blush crept onto my cheeks. Did they really have to bring that up at this moment? “We’ll let you know if we hear anything about them,” Mrs. Grigori said. She ushered us out the door. “Thank you,” I smiled before hugging her. As we made our way back to our castle we all fell silent. As silent as Malika can be, though. “Why must mother always be so stubborn?” Malika sighed. “Because she’s a Montgomery.” I smirked. “True enough,” Luke laughed. After that we all stayed silent until we arrived back home. More months passed and still no sign of Klaus. It had been around half a year since I had seen him and I was getting depressed. More so, I was worried something might have happened. “We’re organizing a search party for Klaus this evening,” Luke informed us all. No one seemed to care that his father had also gone missing. “I’m going to the south,” I told them. “Aria, I know you’re worried but this is dangerous. You could get hurt,” Luke said sternly. “I’m stronger than you all. I can defend myself. And Sophie and I are friends,” I reasoned. “Fine, but then I’m going with you too,” Elijah spoke up. He was the only mortal that knew about my family’s heritage. “Klaus would skin me alive if I let anything happen to you,” He explained. “Alright then. Elijah and I will go to the south side forest.” I said. After planning we all went our separate ways, with our little groups. “How is it you’re the most powerful witch in your family?” Elijah asked. We were on a little canoe, sailing down the lake. “I’ve seen you cast spells, and none of your family matches your strength.” “Well, I’ve trained harder than they have. And also, I was born with a direct line in our family heritage. I may not be the oldest or the strongest, but my Salem blood runs thicker than my brother and sisters.” I explained. “Salem was your mother’s family. Am I right?” He asked. “Yes. My father is mortal.” I explained. “So your family are the direct descendants of Merlin, I’m guessing?” He smirked. “Yeah. Merlin was my grandfather. My mother’s father.” I smiled. Elijah and Klaus were exactly the same when it came to supernatural beings. Always so curious. “Are there other creatures out there, aside from werewolves?” Elijah asked. “There are legends. Myths warning us of beast still to come. But there are kitsuni, ancient fox spirits. They feed off of chaos and misfortune. The cousins to werewolves.” I said. “So for now, these…kitsuni and werewolves are all that we have to fear?” Elijah asked. “Don’t forget demons,” I smirked. “They’re real too?” Elijah asked with a look of surprise. “They are the ones who granted the kitsuni and werewolves their powers. Demons, fallen angels, are the root of all we fear today.” I said gravely. “Have you ever seen one?” Elijah asked quietly. “One.” I replied, knowing he was going to ask who. “Who was it?” He asked predictably. “Sophie.” I replied. “What?” He gasped. “She was the first werewolf. The first werewolf demon. Granted, she didn’t want to become what she is now. Her mother, a manipulative, devious, spiteful woman, sold her daughters soul to a demon. In return for what she did, her mother was granted everlasting life in the form of a spirit. But demons being the evil, problematic, spirits they were, tricked her mother. Sophie was made into a werewolf, along with her father. Together they devoured her mother’s spirit.” “So Sophie is…a demon?” Elijah asked. His voice was hoarse. “A demon creation. But not by her own choice,” I said trying to soothe him. “She seemed so…innocent.” He muttered. “She still is.” I said patting his shoulder. “So her father…was the, is the father of Klaus.” Elijah mumbled. “Yes. Klaus is Sophie’s half brother,” I said. “Well that is…disturbing.” Elijah muttered. “What do you mean?” I asked. “Sophie’s been in love with Klaus for a long time now.” Elijah muttered. “I didn’t know that,” I mumbled. “No one knew that, but me,” Elijah choked out. Suddenly a wave of pity washed through me. This poor man, being in love with the girl who can never love him back. “You’re lucky Klaus met you when he did. Or I fear things between him and Sophie would have become more…complicated.” Elijah said. “What do you mean?” I asked. “Over the past couple of months when Klaus hadn’t known you, he had been struggling with his feelings for Sophie. Struggling because he knew what I felt for her,” Elijah whispered. “And he threw those feelings away?” I asked suspiciously. “He met you and nothing mattered anymore. Klaus and I are close, I know his feelings for you. And Aria, I beg of you not to break his heart. I fear Klaus might not survive that,” Elijah said gravely. “What is that?” I asked, thanking the Lord for this distraction. “What is what?” Elijah asked. His sword raised out towards the trees. We were on the shore now. “I can smell blood. Lots and lots of blood.” I muttered. My inside were writhing. Sophie’s pack wasn’t that large, only about five werewolves including her and her father, but they couldn’t have killed so many times. The smell of blood reeked everywhere, coating the trees and air around it in that sickly smell. “I can smell it too,” Elijah muttered, and I saw him cover his nose with his arm. Ignoring the smell, I stepped out of the canoe and conjured up a small flame in my hand. I could have made the flame bigger but I didn’t want to attract any unwanted attention. The light allowed me to see a couple of feet ahead of me. Sophie’s village would be a little ways into the forest. As I walked I heard Elijah trek behind me, protecting us both from any unseen danger. “Oh…” I muttered. “What?” Elijah asked walking over to me. I heard him gasp as he took in the disgusting sight. Blood was strewn over the floors, coating everything in its path. There were four mangled bodies lying in bits and pieces. “How is it so much blood can come from four bodies?” Elijah asked in horror. “I don’t think these are just four bodies,” I muttered. As I walked deeper into the village, my fears were confirmed. Bodies were strewn everywhere. Blood coated everything. The entire village reeked of death. “What could have done something like this?” I asked in horror. “Something only the most horrific nightmares could conjure up.” Sophie said from behind us. I spun around to face her. Her body was coated in blood. She was wounded across her chest and blood still spilled from it. “What happened?” I asked in a soft whisper. “Klaus’s father,” She growled the name as if it was a profanity. “Surly he couldn’t have done this. He’s a mortal.” I reasoned with her. “Oh, he didn’t do it alone. He had help. From Klaus. And they aren’t what you would call mortal.” Sophie growled again. “What are you going on about?” I asked her. “She means I’m not mortal anymore.” I heard a raspy voice call out. I turned to face the voice, and gasped in horror. Klaus’s father stood before me, coated in blood, dripping from his mouth and hands. Klaus stood behind him, eyes blood red and body covered in blood.
