First there was Zack
I let the sweat on my brow drip down as I placed kick after kick into the punching bag in front of me. I have always taken pride in being fit and being able to defend myself. Something my grandpa drilled into me for the first ten years of my life. Before He ironically passed away of a heart attack. After all his speeches on health, healthy eating and healthy fitness, I had never met another person that cared so much about keeping his body in peak condition. So that day I came home from school to find my grandma crying at the kitchen table. Well, I was just too shell shocked to ask any questions. It had just been me and Grandma Grace after that. She never let me forget grandpa's lesson, though. A young lady must always be able to defend herself. I switched stances as I started laying my routine of jabs and punches into the punching bag. I fell again into the rhythm of my routine. I let my mind drift to my plans for tonight. Zack was working another late night at the office we both worked at. We met in college. I was a senior, and he was a sophomore, regardless of being 2 years older than me. See where I have come from humble beginnings, pushing myself through college on a full-ride scholarship. Zack had lazed his way through college, knowing a job at his father's business was waiting regardless of how long he took to graduate. Our differences in background never seemed to matter though. I had already been interning at his father's company by the time we met. His family jokes all the time he only started putting in work to graduate because he knew he had me waiting at the company. They always appreciated what a hard worker I was, and they loved the initiative their son showed when having me in his life. I have worked for his dad since I graduated from university. Zach came on as upper management in my department shortly after he graduated. We have worked closely together managing our department for the last 3 years. Last Christmas, at his family holiday dinner, he had proposed to me. It was the happiest day of my life. Everything about us just seems to work and click so smoothly. I was so happy to take this next step. I took a deep breath, stepped away from the punching bag and began my wind down stretches. Tomorrow was our 5-year anniversary, and I planned to stop by the office after I showered and cleaned up from my workout. I wanted to bring Zack his favorite steak dinner from uptown and surprise him. He has been working so hard lately, more and more late nights in the office. I started to miss him. Finishing up my stretches, I made my way to the showers. Stepping out of my car in front of the office, I reached for the bags of food in my passenger seat. The smell of the steak had driven me crazy the whole drive there. I was almost as excited about trying the steak as I was about seeing Zack. Bumping my door shut, I slowly made my way up the stairs of our building ready to get inside and out of the cold night. When I walked inside, the security guard looked startled to see me. I simply gave him a wave as I made my way to the elevator. "Does Mr Shapiro know your coming ma'am?" the security grad asked after me. A puzzled look still on his face. " No Sir," I replied, understanding the man was just doing his job. I continued as I pressed the elevator button and waited for the doors to open. "I'm here to surprise him with dinner, tomorrow's our anniversary, and he's just been working so many late nights." "Oh" he paused, looking contemplatively and unsure of himself, "well you have a safe night then, ma'am" the security guard replied, an oddly sad look on his face. The doors to the elevator open and I step inside, only pondering the man's sadness for a moment as the excitement takes back over. Zack is on the 9th floor, so I have a few moments to ready myself before I step out on his floor. It's darker than I expected, but I guess it makes sense for him to only keep his office on light if everyone else has already gone home. I made my way to the corner of the floor that houses his office. The sound of a familiar voice brought my steps to a halt. "Oh Mr Shapiro, I absolutely love it," the sultry feminine voice said, a voice I recognized as his assistant Vannesa. " You know I love to spoil my favorite girl Vanessa", I heard Zack respond as I inched my way closer to his office. Quieting my footsteps. I tiptoed closer to his office, so I could now see through the glass windows. Safe from the view of those inside with the lights off in the rest of the office. I can see a small table set up in his office with a lavish dinner for two put out wine glasses emptied. I saw the love of my life spin his assistant around as he put the diamond necklace on her neck. I watched him spin her back around admiring the expensive necklace he bought for her. She smiled up at him as the breath caught in my throat. He looked down at her with lust in his eyes as I felt like my whole world was crashing. "Oh I do love being your favorite", Vanessa purrs out, as she drops to her knees in front of him. His eyes rolled back as her hands reached for his belt. " God you're such a good f*****g girl Vanessa," he begins to moan as she gets his belt loosed and pulls his c**k out with ease. A comfort, a familiarity like she's done this a thousand f*****g times. The pain in me slowly turns to anger as I stand there and watch her on her knees for him. As he lets his head roll back, I finish making my way to his door, slamming it against his wall so hard the windows in it shatter. Vanessa screams and chokes on her knees at the surprising sound behind her, and if the look on Zack's face is any indication, she definitely clamped her jaw closed in surprise. " You're a real piece of f*****g s**t Zack Shapiro" I grit out, throwing the food at them as Vanessa sits there coughing on the floor, Zack falls to the ground holding his limp bleeding c**k in his hand. "I hope you rot in hell". I spit at him before loosening the engagement ring off my hand, throwing it at him and running as fast as I could out of that office. Away from him, from Vanessa, from the whole life I built here. The whole life I built here around him. I didn't even want to go back to our penthouse apartment. Everything that was there were memories of him. Everything I bought here made me think of him. So I did the only logical thing and drove straight to the airport. Got on a plane I went to the only place I always knew was going to be safe. Time to go home. Time to go see Grandma Grace.
