An unexpected patient

1203 Words
She opened her eyes slowly, stretching out on the small bed they had to rest on the guards. She didn't even have time to look in the mirror, the pager rang insistently warning her of a new case in the emergency room. She was fed up with the Wednesday shifts but being a first-year resident, she had no choice. She remembered her tutor's words as she hurriedly put on her robe; "Melek, you're going to have to watch Wednesday and be in ICU on Monday, sorry." but she knew the bastard wasn't sorry. When she reached the emergency door, her partner on duty approached to inform her.  —Have you rested? —Melek nodded and gave her a smile. He turned red.  —A patient in his 30s has just arrived. — What happened? —A cardiac stab, in a fight. Apparently they have had a collision in the middle of the avenue that has ended in a knife fight. The closest hospital was this one and apparently he has health insurance. —Okay, let's see. Go rest if you want, after all there were fifteen minutes left to make the change. —Okay, if things get complicated, call me pager. —Marcos answered as he went down the hall. Melek entered the security code to enter the emergency corridor and walked lightly toward the ward. It was not difficult for her to recognize the patient who had just arrived since the man had his chest covered by a thick bandage. She went to the bedside and checked that everything was in order, then she moved to the feet and took the patient's information. She scanned the report until he reached the name; Derek Kast. The papers fell on the bed and her hands began to shake as Dan, the head of Cardiosurgery, entered. —Melek? is everything alright? —he asked in a worried tone. —Yes, yes.. Wait a minute —she closed her eyes for a few seconds and gathered all the calm she could. —Are you going to operate? —she asked, changing the subject. —Not. Although it's a deep wound it has been clean. Be careful that he doesn't lack any pain reliever, if he wakes up and is in pain he may pass out —Melek nodded at his boss's request and he continued speaking. —I'm going to inform the family. —I'll let know, if you want  — her voice sounded clear in the middle of the room despite being trembling inside. —Perfect, I'm going back to the operating rooms. As soon as Dan left, Melek leaned against the small sofa that was available for short visits counting to a hundred to compose herself. He remembered what his mother always told him, to breathe calmly and think about the little things that would give him peace. He set his favorite beach in his mind and his breathing returned to normal. He stood up and after giving his unexpected patient a disgusted look, he went to the waiting room. The doors were thrown open and all the members of the Kast family rose to their feet, eager for something new. Mr. Kast walked quickly towards her and grabbed her slim shoulders. Melek stiffened like an arrow and took a step backward, trying to appear cold. —They're Derek Kast's relatives, right? —they all nodded eagerly. —Your family member is well, stable. He will spend tonight in the emergency room and tomorrow he will go up to the plant. There is no need for an operation and right now he is on pain relievers. —Thank my God! —elled the patient's mother. She walked over to her and wrapped her arms around her—. Thank you, thank you —Melek gently pushed her away. —You don't have to thank us for anything, this is our job. —Can't we see him until tomorrow? —Derek's brother David asked. Melek tried to control the nausea that was causing her to see the whole family and David in particular, and answered in a tremulous voice: —Exactly. Goodnight. Se turned quickly and when the doors closed behind her she released the breath she didn't know she was holding. She ran to her little hiding place and pulled out his cell phone to call her best friend. —Melek? —Lua answered half asleep. —He's here. —Who is there? —The person who killed my brother —answered, breaking into tears. -Mel, honey, calm down, okay? Think of all the time you've been wanting your revenge, it may be time —Melek closed her eyes and wiped away her tears, her best friend was right—. Relax and don't spoil everything. —It will be, Lu, it will be. I leave you, I'm still on guard. —Bye, I love you. —Me too, kisses. She put her phone away, washed her face well, and pulled her long ponytail back. She went back to the emergency room and watched Derek calmly. She hadn't seen him before and realized that he was nothing like her brother David. His brown skin surprised her despite being in the middle of winter, she looked at the shapely arms that lay inert on the white bed and noticed how the veins protruded from his hands even when he was so weak. The black eyebrows were furrowed and gave him face a serious look despite his condition, even so, it gave him the feeling that he resembled an angel even though she knew that no one from that family could be. At that moment she realized... What was she doing looking at him? Had she gone crazy? She shook her head and turned to another patient. At that moment a nurse came in with a bottle of serum. —Hey —informal greeting. Melek gave her a half smile —. While I put the serum, can you see if the patient in the background has run out of the analgesic I have given him? —Of course —she hurried to the back bed and looked at how much morphine the patient had left—. You have to change it now. —Okay doctor, I'll be here in a moment. —Don't worry, I'll get there. She turned around, smiling, excited to be called a doctor when she was still a resident. On the way to the small warehouse, she heard the beeps from one of the machines and ran back to the emergency room. —The patient is convulsing! —the nurse yelled from the head of bed one, making herself heard over the beeps. Melek came running over, Derek convulsing violently. —Oxygen mask one hundred percent. Give a bolus of diazepam, go! Carefully fixing the position of her head while the nurse did her work, she held out the oxygen mask and placed her hand on her chest carefully, trying to keep her moving as little as possible. —Diazepam bolus inside —said the nurse. After a few minutes, the jerky movements did not stop and became increasingly abrupt. —Give another bolus. Ten milligram diazepam. —Ready. Other doctors on duty came running into the room asking what was happening. Melek told them the situation and they waited the courtesy minutes for the medicine to take effect. Within two minutes, the beeping began to dim and Derek stopped convulsing. All the accumulated tension slammed into the room, changing the silence into sighs of relief and to everyone's surprise, Derek opened his eyes. _________ I hope you like the beginning of this new story!
