Other doctors on duty came running into the room asking what was happening. Melek told them the situation and they waited for the courtesy minutes for the medicine to take effect. Within two minutes, the beeping began to dim and Derek stopped convulsing. All the accumulated tension slammed into the room, changing the silence to sighs of relief and to everyone's surprise, Derek opened his eyes.
Everyone present was perplexed except her, who reacted quickly. She pulled out the small flashlight she always carried from her left pocket and leaned over to inspect Derek's eyes, when she brought her free hand to his face he grabbed her arm.
—Quiet —she said in a calm voice—. I'm just going to inspect your eyes and check your reflexes.
Derek looked at her suspiciously but loosening his grip until his hand fell limply back onto the bed. She checked one eye and then another, they were a dark gray that turned almost opaque in the light. Melek smiled when she saw that the pupil responded correctly, he was going to need his eyes in good condition to witness her revenge.
—I'm going to move the flashlight sideways, you have to follow the light, okay? —she asked and he nodded weakly.
She moved the flashlight calmly and he followed the light along. Then she inspected his legs and could see that he felt them, everything seemed to be going well. The doctors and nurses were vacating the room until they left her alone when they saw that the patient responded normally to the stimuli. After the control check she went to change the other drippers that were running out, her watch was about to finish and she sighed with relief. She began to think about the purchases she had to do before she got home and made a mental list of what she needed. The beeping of the first bed brought her out of her reverie.
—Is something wrong with you, are you in pain? —she asked when she reached the foot of the bed. Derek removed his oxygen mask.
—Go taking all these things from me —he snapped reluctantly.
—I can remove the oxygen, the rest has to be a few more hours —Melek answered calmly.
—I want to go home now, don't you understand?
—That's not going to be possible, do you understand? —he smirked at her manner and Melek's anger increased. She gathered a few seconds to stay calm before answering—. In a couple of hours they will raise you to the floor, whether you want to or not.
—Are you going to be my doctor?
—I'm not a doctor yet, I'm a resident.
—Well resident... —Derek looked up as if searching for something inside her head—. Can you check my wound? it hurts a little.
—Of course, one second.
He was completely alone for a few minutes and remembered. His brother had come out of jail with more enemies than ever, enemies that were added to those that the whole family already had. They had haunted him all afternoon until he realized it and stood up to them. Despite not wanting to have anything to do with his family's businesses, he appreciated the self-defense classes, this time they had saved his life. The arrival of a man a few years younger than him brought him out of his thoughts.
—Resident Tassone told me he needed a change of bandage and a change of painkillers —he said by way of introduction.
—Where is? —Derek asked.
—Her shift is over —he explained without further ado—. Let's see if we can go to the floor.
Derek nodded and allowed himself to be healed by the new nurse. The reality is that he did not feel any discomfort or an iota of pain, he had simply looked for an excuse to have the beautiful nurse around for a few more minutes. Wow... He'd have to think of another plan. At least he already knew her last name, Tassone.
At night, she went for a run. She had not been able to play sports for two weeks and she was looking forward to it. She began a calm jog on her way to the boardwalk, rested and full of energy after a good night's sleep and after pampering herself in the shower. When she entered the boardwalk the number of people running increased. Without a doubt, being close to the sea had become one of the favorite routes for sports. The sight of the sun hiding by the rocks accompanied the whole way along with the sound of the waves breaking.
She stopped at six miles, propping herself up on her thighs to catch her breath, then started back at a brisk pace but never running. Her legs burned with exertion and she felt his ankles ache. The two weeks without playing sports had definitely taken their toll. She uncapped the bottle in her hand and splashed water on the back of her neck before taking a sip.
When she got home, she went straight to the small room she had set up for sports and despite her fatigue she covered her hands with the boxing tapes. She hit the bag hard until her cell phone started ringing.
—Yes?
—Hello daughter! —her mother said enthusiastically.
—Hi mom, how are you? —It was difficult to speak for the lack of air and moved the mobile a few inches to breathe without alarming her.
—Well, you know.. All day working. And you, my girl?
Her parents had a food store big enough to feed them and pay the bills, and although she helped them too, they never wanted to ask she for a coin. The result of this was having to work day and night, which also helped them cope with the loss of their older brother.
—Well mom, I was on duty last night, you know.. It was a busy night.
—Was there a lot of income?
—Only one but it was... Complicated —she omitted to tell her who it was, she didn't want to make her sad—. By the way, I received a message for Christmas dinner.. Weren't we going to spend it alone?
—Yes, but your father's family wants us to get back together and you know how they are.. —she dropped. Melek grunted on the other end of the line—. Don't get mad, do it for them.
—When have they done something for me? —Melek asked, on the verge of getting angry.
—Daughter I don't want to argue, we will go because your father is excited and I would very much like you to be with us but hey, if you don't want to...
—Mom I notice a bit of blackmail in your words..
—I have to make dinner, my girl —she answered, changing the subject masterfully—. Good night I love you.
—Me too mom, me too.
She parked the car on one of the side streets of the hospital. Despite being on the main avenue, bad weather had left the streets without passers-by. The rain was pouring down and the wind was blowing in violent gusts. Nor did she think of using the umbrella, she would not arrive alive no matter how careful she was with it. She closed the coat over his chest and hurried up the stone steps to the front door of the hospital.
When she entered the hospital it was completely silent, it was noticeable that there were no operating rooms scheduled during the day. Well, she could work quietly and in no rush. She dropped her things at the locker and changed her clothes in record time, it was time to see the patients she had to visit. She went through the list and the rooms and felt a little nervous when she saw Derek's name. She would go to see him first, so she could continue the day without any strange feelings.
She took the staff elevator and punched in number five, the floor where all the cardio patients were. Before passing the review I would go for the documents. When she reached the glass door, she smiled when she saw her name engraved next to the metallic heart.
—Good morning Jes, can you give me the documentation you have prepared for me?
—Good morning, Melek. One second —se greeted with a smile. She was one of the nicest people she knew—. Here you go, have a good day.
—Equally!
She headed for Derek's room, number 503, and knocked on the door several times before opening it. Derek was sitting on the bed reading a book, surrounded by balloons and stuffed animals, which left Melek in shock.
—Good Morning —Derek said with a smile—. Sorry for the mess.
—Good morning, don't worry —Melek answered as she stroked a brown teddy bear—. How are you?
—Now, much better.
—Okay, I'm going to check your wound. Are you still on medications?
—I got something like napro..
—Naproxen, it is for pain —Melek interrupted—. Can you open your pajamas?
—Don't you think you're going a bit fast? —he asked in an attempt to flirt. Melek rolled her eyes and he laughed—. I'm coming, calm down.
Melek quickly removed the bandage and healed his wound. It didn't look very good, so she took several doses of antibiotics along with the naproxen. She carefully re-bandaged the wound under Derek's watchful eye.
—All right —said once she finished—. You're going to have to stay a few more days.
—Impossible —he answered flatly. She opened her mouth and closed it again—. I have the discharge prepared for today, I have to go now.
—Your life may be at risk, the wound is a little infected and it is quite deep.
—Well, then you will have to come to my house to prevent that from happening.
—Sorry?
—I will pay you what you ask in exchange for you to come to my house to check the wound and wear me whatever is necessary —he replied with a broad smile—. Your tutor agrees and if you accept he will give you the new schedule so you can continue working.
—But what..
—You have to decide until twelve.
