27 The Calling—Nov. 1942 The Corpsman Dear Kalasia, I have started this letter ten times, but each time I did, the j**s decided otherwise. A lot of this will get marked out with a black pen, so I’ll trust the censors to leave enough so you’ll get an idea about what’s going on here. Right now I’m back at a field hospital close to Henderson Field. One of our sergeants got wounded, and I brought him back here, and I’m waiting until I find out how he’s doing. Our squad has been on the line for a week and faced some awful scraps. The j**s have a lot of nerve, and they don’t give up. But they never fought Marines before. I think they believed we were a bunch of lazy, overfed sissy-boys who thought this whole war would be a walk in the park. Boy, were they surprised! I mean they are patriotic
