28 The Suitor—Nov. 1942 Johnny Strange Marjean Langston looked out the big corner window of her room in her dad’s house in Sandpoint, Idaho. Heavy snow was falling, and it covered the street that ran by the front of her house with a mantle of white. Occasionally a car went by, marring the deep soft blanket, but it was cold enough outside that the snow was sticking and even as she watched the invasive furrows filled again. From her window she had a panoramic view—the street, the side yard and the two-acre yard that led down to the Pend Oreille River just a few hundred feet behind the house. Marjean loved this place.
