The drive to St. Mary's General Hospital felt endless.
Rain hammered against the windshield as the company car sped through the crowded streets. Rachel sat in the back seat, twisting her trembling fingers together. Every second that passed tightened the knot in her chest.
Please be okay, Mom.
Please...
The driver glanced at her through the rearview mirror.
"We'll be there in five minutes, Miss Langston."
Rachel nodded, unable to speak.
Her phone vibrated.
It was Emily.
Rachel answered immediately.
"Emily?"
"Rachel..." Her sister's voice cracked with tears. "Mom is awake now. The doctors say she's stable, but they want to keep her for observation."
Rachel closed her eyes in relief.
"Thank God."
"You don't have to rush anymore. Just come safely."
"I will."
She ended the call and leaned back against the seat.
For the first time since leaving Williams Global, she could breathe.
Inside his office, Alexander Williams stood by the window, staring at the city below.
His assistant entered cautiously.
"Sir, should I reschedule the board meeting for tomorrow?"
Alexander nodded absentmindedly.
"Yes."
The assistant hesitated.
"Sir... if I may ask..."
Alexander looked at him.
"You've never canceled a board meeting for anyone."
Alexander remained silent.
He didn't know why he had done it either.
Rachel Langston was just another employee.
At least...
That was what he kept telling himself.
Meanwhile, Vanessa Carter sat in an expensive cafe across from Williams Global.
She stirred her coffee slowly as a private investigator handed her a brown envelope.
"Everything you asked for."
Vanessa opened it.
Inside were photographs of Rachel.
Her university graduation.
Her apartment.
Her mother.
Her younger sister.
Vanessa smirked.
"So this is Rachel Langston."
The investigator nodded.
"She comes from a poor family."
"No father."
"Her mother has health problems."
"They're struggling financially."
Vanessa's smile widened.
"Perfect."
She closed the file.
"Poor people always have a weakness."
Rachel arrived at the hospital and hurried inside.
Emily rushed into her arms.
"I was so scared."
Rachel hugged her tightly.
"It's okay."
"I'm here."
The sisters walked into the hospital room together.
Mrs. Langston smiled weakly from the bed.
"There are my girls."
Rachel sat beside her and gently held her hand.
"You scared us."
"I'm sorry."
Mrs. Langston chuckled softly.
"I suppose I worked too hard again."
Rachel's smile faded.
"You need to stop pushing yourself to hard mom ."
Her mother looked at her carefully.
"How was your interview?"
Rachel suddenly remembered.
She laughed through her tears.
"I got the job."
Mrs. Langston's eyes filled with joy.
"I knew you would."
"I always believed in you."
Rachel rested her forehead against her mother's hand.
"I won't let you down."
"You never have."
Later that evening, Rachel stepped outside the hospital for some fresh air.
The rain had finally stopped.
She looked up at the stars beginning to appear.
For the first time in months...
Life felt hopeful.
"Miss Langston?"
She turned.
Standing a few feet away was Alexander's driver.
He smiled politely.
"Mr. Williams asked me to wait until I knew your family was safe."
Rachel stared at him.
"He... did?"
"Yes."
"He also asked me to give you this."
The driver handed her a small white envelope.
Inside was a handwritten note.
I hope your mother recovers quickly.
Take tomorrow off. Family comes first.
—Alexander Williams
Rachel read the note twice.
Then a third time.
It wasn't long.
But somehow...
It felt sincere.
A small smile spread across her face.
"Thank you," she whispered, though Alexander wasn't there to hear it.
Back at Williams Global, Alexander sat alone in his office long after everyone else had gone home.
His eyes fell on the empty chair where Rachel had sat during the interview.
He remembered her laughter in the elevator.
Her honesty.
The way she spoke about her family.
He had spent years convincing himself that kindness was a weakness.
Yet today...
A stranger had reminded him what genuine kindness looked like.
He picked up the pen on his desk but couldn't focus on the reports in front of him.
Instead, one thought lingered in his mind.
Who are you, Rachel Langston?
Across town, Vanessa stood on the balcony of her penthouse, looking out over the glittering city.
She held Rachel's file in one hand and a glass of wine in the other.
"So you've finally smiled again, Alexander."
She tore one of Rachel's photographs from the file.
"I wonder..."
"...how long that smile will last."
A cold laugh escaped her lips as the wind carried the torn photograph into the darkness below.
Little did Rachel know...
Someone had already decided to turn her dream job into her worst nightmare.
