The rain had been falling since dawn, turning the city streets into shimmering rivers of light. Rachel Langston stepped off the bus, clutching her handbag tightly against her chest. A gust of wind threatened to pull the umbrella from her hands, but she held on and hurried toward the tallest building she had ever seen. Williams Global Holdings. She looked up, her heart pounding. "So... this is where my future begins." At twenty-four, Rachel had spent the last ten months searching for a job. Every rejection letter chipped away at her confidence, but not her determination. She had a widowed mother depending on her, a younger sister with dreams of attending university, and unpaid bills waiting at home. Failure wasn't an option. She checked her watch. 8:55 a.m. Her interview was at nine. "If I run, I can still make it." She hurried through the revolving doors just as a tall man dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit entered beside her. Without warning, the lobby lights flickered. Then everything went dark. A second later, emergency lights glowed dimly as voices echoed around the lobby. "The elevators have stopped!" Rachel's stomach dropped. "No..." She had already stepped into one. The doors closed. The elevator jerked violently before coming to a stop. Silence. Rachel slowly turned. She wasn't alone. Standing beside her was the same man who had entered the building moments earlier. He looked calm. Almost too calm. Rachel forced a smile. "Looks like we're stuck." The man nodded once. "It appears so." His voice was deep and steady. Rachel pressed the emergency button several times. Nothing. "Great," she muttered. "My biggest interview, and now this." The man glanced at her. "Job interview?" She sighed. "Yes." "I've been looking for work for almost a year." "You'll find another." Rachel shook her head. "No." "I need this one." Something in her voice made the stranger study her more carefully. "You sound certain." "My family is counting on me." For the first time that morning, the man's expression softened. Minutes passed. The silence became awkward. Rachel hated awkward silence. "So..." she said. "What do you do?" "I work here." "Oh." She smiled. "Then you must know the CEO." "I do." Rachel groaned dramatically. "I've heard he's impossible." The stranger raised an eyebrow. "Is that so?" "My friend said he once fired someone for arriving three minutes late." The man's lips twitched. "Your friend exaggerates." Rachel laughed. "I hope so." "I don't even know what he looks like." "If he's old and grumpy, maybe he'll retire soon." The man folded his arms. "And if he isn't?" Rachel shrugged. "Then I hope he has a heart." The stranger couldn't remember the last time someone had spoken so freely around him. Most people were nervous. Some were desperate to impress him. This woman... She simply spoke her mind. "So," Rachel continued, "what's your name?" "Alexander." "Nice to meet you, Alexander." She extended her hand without hesitation. After a brief pause, he shook it. "Rachel." Her handshake was warm. Firm. Confident. Nothing like the rehearsed politeness he encountered every day. The emergency speaker suddenly crackled to life. "We apologize for the inconvenience. Power has been restored." The elevator began moving again. Rachel smiled with relief. "We made it!" When the doors opened, she rushed out. "Good luck at work, Alexander!" Before he could respond, she disappeared down the hallway. Alexander watched her leave. For reasons he couldn't explain... He smiled. It was small. Almost invisible. But it was there. A few minutes later, Rachel stood outside the executive conference room, trying to calm her racing heart. The receptionist opened the door. "Mr. Williams will see you now." Rachel stepped inside confidently. Then she froze. Her eyes widened. Seated behind the massive mahogany desk... ...was Alexander. The man from the elevator. He looked up from the résumé in front of him. Their eyes met. A slow smile crossed his face. "Good morning, Miss Langston." Rachel's mouth fell open. "You..." Alexander leaned back in his chair. "You said you hoped the CEO had a heart." A blush spread across Rachel's cheeks. "I... I didn't know..." "No," he replied. "You didn't." For the first time in years... Alexander Williams found himself looking forward to an interview. And for the first time in her life... Rachel Langston realized that fate had a strange sense of humor.
