Chapter Six: The Woman from the Past

765 Words
Monday morning arrived with bright sunshine, but Rachel Langston couldn't shake the feeling that something was about to change. She stepped into Williams Global with her usual warm smile, greeting the receptionist before heading to the executive floor. "Good morning, Miss Langston," Sophia greeted." "Morning, Sophia." "Mr. Williams is already in his office. He asked for you as soon as you arrived." Rachel nodded. "I'll go in." She knocked gently. "Come in." Alexander didn't look up immediately. His attention was fixed on a file spread across his desk. "Good morning, Mr. Williams." He finally raised his head. "Good morning, Rachel." Rachel noticed something different. He looked tired. The dark circles beneath his eyes suggested he hadn't slept. "Did you work all night?" she asked before realizing she had spoken out of turn. Alexander gave a faint smile. "Something like that." Rachel walked over and placed his schedule on the desk. "You have three meetings before noon and a charity dinner tonight." "I know." He sighed. "I hate charity dinners." Rachel laughed. "Isn't that where rich people pretend to like each other?" Alexander looked at her. Then, unexpectedly... He laughed. "I suppose that's one way to describe it." Their laughter filled the office. Neither of them noticed the woman standing just outside the glass door. Her perfectly manicured nails dug into her designer handbag. Her jaw tightened. Vanessa Carter. She had heard everything. Without knocking, she pushed the door open. The laughter stopped instantly. Alexander's smile disappeared. Rachel turned toward the door. Standing there was a stunning woman in a red designer dress, wearing expensive jewelry and confidence like a crown. Her sharp eyes landed on Rachel. Then slowly traveled to Alexander. "So..." Vanessa said with a cold smile. "This is why you've been ignoring my calls." The room fell silent. Rachel looked from Vanessa to Alexander. She could feel the tension between them. Alexander stood. "What are you doing here?" Vanessa ignored his question. Instead, she walked confidently toward Rachel. "You must be the new assistant." Rachel smiled politely. "Rachel Langston." Vanessa didn't shake her hand. Instead, she looked Rachel up and down. "So ordinary." Rachel's smile faded. Alexander's voice turned icy. "That's enough, Vanessa." Vanessa looked at him. "What?" "I'm only being honest." She turned back to Rachel. "Let me give you a little advice." She leaned closer. "Don't mistake kindness for affection." Rachel remained calm. "I'm sorry?" Vanessa smiled. "Alexander has a habit of helping lost little puppies." "But eventually..." "He gets bored." Alexander slammed his hand against the desk. "Vanessa!" The sound echoed through the office. Rachel flinched. Vanessa looked at him, surprised. "You've never raised your voice at me before." Alexander's eyes were filled with anger. "And you've never insulted my employee before." The words hit Vanessa like a slap. My employee. For a brief second, hurt flashed across her face before it was replaced by fury. She grabbed her handbag. "This isn't over." As she walked toward the door, she stopped beside Rachel. Their eyes met. Vanessa whispered quietly enough that only Rachel could hear. "Stay away from him." Rachel didn't answer. Vanessa walked out, her high heels clicking sharply against the marble floor. The office remained silent. Alexander rubbed his forehead. "I'm sorry." Rachel looked at him. "You don't have to apologize." "Yes..." He sighed. "I do." She hesitated before asking softly, "Was she...?" "My ex-fiancee." Rachel nodded slowly. Now everything made sense. The sadness. The look on his face whenever his phone rang. Alexander stared out the window. "She left me three years ago." Rachel didn't ask why. Some wounds didn't need to be opened. After a long silence, she quietly placed a cup of tea on his desk. "I'll leave you to your work." As she reached the door, Alexander spoke. "Rachel." She turned. "Thank you." She smiled gently. "You don't have to thank me." After she left, Alexander watched the closed door for a long moment. He realized something that unsettled him. Whenever Rachel was near... The weight on his shoulders felt lighter. Meanwhile, Vanessa sat inside her black luxury car parked across the street. Her driver glanced in the mirror. "Home, Miss Carter?" Vanessa stared at the towering Williams Global building. "No." She slowly smiled. "We're going to pay someone a visit." She picked up Rachel's file from the passenger seat. "If Alexander wants to protect her..." "...then I'll simply destroy her from the outside." As the car pulled away, dark clouds gathered over the city. Neither Rachel nor Alexander knew it yet... But the first move in Vanessa's dangerous game had already been made.
