And It made All the Difference

As Lily stood in line to order at the cafeteria, Adam made his way to her. His heart pounded audibly as he mustered the courage to ask. "Lily, I wanted to know if you would like to go to the sock hop with me?" Adam's long hair fell into his eyes. He wiped it away with his sweaty palms.  Lily hesitated, knowing that her mother might disapprove, " Sure, I would like to go with you." Lily smiled. It felt good to talk to Adam again after the whole ordeal with Kalvin. It had broken Adam's heart to see Lily with Kalvin since he had hoped she would go out with him. "I'll see you Friday. My mom will probably bring us." Picking up her order, Lily headed back to sit with her friends. They had been watching as she spoke with Adam, and each one was grinning.  "What?" Lily asked, bemused by the atmosphere at the table. "So, what happened?" Ally asked eagerly. "Are y'all going to the dance together?"  Shyly, Lily simply replied, "Yes. We are." Ally's bright eyes sparked as she squealed with delight. Lily had a boyfriend on the first day of school! *********** Lily's Doppelganger********* Adam had just asked Lily to the dance. She sighed, "No, I can't. I have way too much homework to do." "But school just started, surely you don't have that much to do." "I have reports to write on the reading assignment. Besides, my mom wouldn't approve of me going on dates, I need to focus on school." "You sure there is no way I can change your mind?" Adam pushed further, hoping Lily would relent and accept him.  "No," Lily replied coldly, "Isn't there anyone else you could ask?" Adam, dejected and hurt, looked at Lily pleading with her to accept him.  Lily refused. Adam left sadly. Picking up her order, Lily sat with her friends. They all looked aghast at Lily. She had just turned down likely the only guy who was interested in her just so she could stay home and study. Ally spoke, "Lily, why didn't you say yes? Adam has been dying to go out with you since last year. You just broke his heart." Lily shrugged coldly, "I have to study and do chores. There isn't time for me to go to a dance I wouldn't enjoy anyway. I don't like to dance, especially in front of people I barely or don't know." Ally shook her head, "You are such a nerd."
