Chapter 03. FAMILY NIGHT. June's POV. Standing on the porch outside Eric's apartment, I closed my eyes, and drew in a deep calming breath. As I opened my eyes, I pushed the doorbell, and then took a step back. Waiting for someone to get the door, I lowered my head, while holding my bag in front of me. Just then, the door opened. “Oh, you're here.” Eric said with a smile as he opened the door. “Come on in.” I returned the smile, and walked in. If you think I wanted to come here, then you're wrong because I'd no intention of accepting his offer. I mean, it's hasn't even been a day yet since Jared broke up with me. Going into another relationship even if it wasn't real didn't seem like what I wanted to do. If I had my way, I would have declined the offer. However, I couldn't. The thought of actually ending up in the street made my skin crawl with sparks of dread than actually finding myself on the street. Besides, I'd absolutely no idea when I picked up my phone and called him. It was after I ended the call that I realized that I might have gotten myself into some more trouble than I thought. Meanwhile, after Eric closed the door, he walked up to me, and led me into the dining where I believe the people who were present were his family. “Mom, dad, this is the girl I've been telling you about.” he said, wrapping his arm around my waist. “Her name is June. She is my girlfriend, and I plan on getting married to her.” As he said those words, my heart sank. The room went silent for a few seconds. And that made me feel worse. At that moment, I wished I'd never come to begin with. “Ahem,” his father dropped his cutleries on the table, and drank some water. “Your girlfriend, you say?” “Yes dad, she is my girlfriend.” he said. “You all never believed me when I said that I have one, and now I'm here to prove you wrong.” “You are here to prove me wrong?” his father scoffed, as he dabbed the corners of his lips with a handkerchief. “Very well then, let her sit so that we can get to know her very well.” “Come with me.” he said, taking my hand as he brought me to the dining table. “Sit here.” He pulled out a chair for me to sit. As I sat down, he sat right next to me. “So, who are your parents?” he asked, tossing the handkerchief on the table. “What do they do?” “Uh,” I looked at Eric as if trying to get the answers from his face. “Uh, my parents are late.” “In that case, what do you do?” he asked, in a curious tone. “I am a detect…” “Actually, she handles her family's business here.” Eric said, nudging me softly in the arm. “She has been in, and out of the state, and now she's back.” His father shifted his gaze from me to him. And then he brought back his gaze to me. Of course, he must have figured that something in Eric's words wasn't true. But he refused to say a thing. I'd no idea what he must have told his father about me, but lying? Come on! That was way out of it. We barely met a day ago, and he hadn't even had the time to know me better. But he had cooked up some lie about me. What if his father found out about the truth? What would then happen? My father never owned a company to his name; he was barely trying to survive. I sighed, tingling my fingers. As if he noticed that I wasn't comfortable with what he had said, he held my hand which was on my laps, and then smiled. I guess that was meant to put my mind at ease. And honestly, it did. But that lie? It wasn't necessary. But then again, I could understand because by the look of things, his father wouldn't allow Eric settle for anything less. Meanwhile, the young lady who sat next to Eric's father didn't utter a word the whole time. On the one hand, it seemed like she was interested in what I had to say. And on the other hand, it seemed like she knew it was all an act, but refused to say a word. “I have to use the restroom.” I pushed my chair back as I got up on my feet. “I will be back.” “It is right over there.” Eric directed. “Thank you.” I forced a smile, and began to head in the direction which he pointed in. As I got to the restroom, I turned on the faucet, collected some water, and washed my face. I didn't actually want to pee. I just needed a moment to breathe. Supporting my body weight with my hands on the sink, I lowered my head and sighed. “Who do you think you are?” the voice came from behind. I flinched. “Oh, you scared me.” I clutched my chest with a hand, and heaved a sigh of relief as I turned back. It was the same lady who sat close to Eric's father, but didn't say a word the whole time we were at the dining table. “You can't deceive me.” she folded her arms across her chest, and took took a step forward. “I am not Eric's father that you can lie to, and get away with it.” “I have no idea what you're talking about.” I swallowed hard as I tried moving back, only to realize that it was a dead end. “Oh, please don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about.” she rolled her eyes. “We both know that you aren't what Eric said that you are. This is just some act to ruin my marriage with him.” “Pardon?” the word jolted out of my lips. “Y—Your marriage with him?” “Drop that act.” she said, speaking through her teeth. “It annoys me when you act like you don't know what's going on. Of course, you should know that Eric, and I are getting married soon. Although, I know that he doesn't like me as much, but I never thought he would go this far.” “I—I don't understand what you're talking about.” I stuttered. “Just drop the act, will you!” a flash of temper lighted her eyes. My spine stiffened. She sighed as if to calm herself down. “Just drop the act already.” her voice dropped. “I don't know how you both got to know each other. But if I were you, I would stop seeing him.” “And why's that?” my voice shook with fear. “I know that Eric is behind this. I just need enough evidence to prove it.” her breath stirred against my neck as she whispered the words. “Believe me when I say that I'll get to the root of this. I'm going to find out exactly what's going on between the both of you.” She took some steps back after saying those words, giving me a moment to breathe. “You want my advice?” she washed her hands for a few seconds, and then turned off the faucet. “You had better leave else you won't have an idea what hit you.” She shook her hands to get rid of the water on them. After doing that, she rolled some tissue, wiped her hands, and then tossed it in the waste bin. “And what if I don't?” I asked as she opened the door to leave. She stopped, and turned back to face me. “Well, I'm sure you don't want to end up like your parents, or do you?” My heart shook at the words, while I watched her chuckle, and exit the restroom.
