THE BREAK UP.
Chapter 01.
THE BREAK UP.
June's POV
“Jared, what's the meaning of this?” I asked as he opened the door, and walked in.
“Where did you get that?” he asked, closing the door behind him. “Why are you with that?”
“You were planning to leave without me.” I said, staring at the travel documents in my hands with tears in my eyes. “How could you, Jared?”
“I am sorry, but I was going to tell you.” he said.
“You were going to tell me?” I scoffed, blinking back tears. “Can you even listen to yourself right now? Five years, Jared. How could you do this to me?”
“June…”
“Who is she?” I sniffled, wiping off the tears on my face with the back of my hands. “And how long have you two been together?”
“You are overreacting, June.” he said.
“Oh, really?” I jerked my head back slightly. “Is that what you've say to me? How exactly do you expect me to feel right now? Am I supposed to hug you and tell you that you did the right thing?”
“I don't know how best to explain the situation.” he said, shaking his head. “But we can talk about this.”
“Talk about what exactly?” I asked, looking him straight in the eyes. “The fact that you were planning to leave without telling me? Or what exactly are we supposed to talk about?”
“Everything, I guess.” he said.
“Be honest with me Jared,” I said, trying to suppress the tears in my throat. “If I never found these documents, you wouldn't have said anything about it.”
“I was.”
“Stop lying to me!” I raised my voice as tears burned in my eyes. “I can't even begin to think how long you've been lying to me.”
“You should have never gone through my stuffs if you weren't prepared to handle the truth.” he said with ice in his voice. “However, you did. And you got what you want.”
I would never go through his stuffs. However, curiosity got the better of me when I found a document sticking out its nose from a part of his briefcase. I told myself that I would only take a glance, and then put it back. But the moment I took the document, and went through it, I found myself staring at it longer than I thought I would.
I just couldn't put it down. The documents suddenly felt heavier than my heart. What I saw wouldn't allow me put it down. So, instead, I went through his stuffs to be sure that I wasn't hallucinating, or perhaps seeing things. Unfortunately, I wasn't. He had everything planned out. There was a flight to Spain booked for 6am the next day.
“You think I want any of these?” I narrowed my gaze. “No, I don't. In fact, I wish it was all a lie. But unfortunately, it's not. You were planning to leave without me.”
“Yes, I was. And I'm not denying it.” his voice was as hard as steel. “But it's all your fault.”
“So now it's my fault, uh?” I asked. “I am the one who's hurting here, not you. But you still say it's my fault.”
“Yes, it's your fault.” he said, nodding his head. “ You are always trying to investigate every case because you think it might help you uncover the truth about your parent's death. But what about me? What about us? Your parents died five years ago. Isn't that enough time to let go of this?”
“Jared…”
“Besides, when was the last time you stood in front of a mirror?” he arched a brow. “Have you taken a good look at yourself lately? Even my mother doesn't look this old, and wretched.”
“What?” my heart sank at the words. “Did you just say that to me? How could you Jared? How could you say those words to me?”
“I am sorry it came out the way it did.” he said. “However, each time I look at you, I don't see the girl I fell in love with.”
“Is that why you decided to to cheat on me?” I asked, my voice breaking with tears. “You could have just told me, and I would have done something about it. Why did you have to do this?”
“I am sorry, but I didn't know how best to tell you.” he said. “I just couldn't utter the words. I thought you would realize, but you didn't. I gave you time to do so, but you didn't. These days, you disgust me.”
Every nerve in my body seemed to shrink as he said those words. Perhaps, I don't look like the woman he fell in love with. But that's not my fault. I didn't want to lose him; I wanted to save his life at all cost, and that's why I did things which I wasn't supposed to just so that I wouldn't have a reason to cry over him.
“Do you know how much I suffered after you had that accident?” I asked, my voice heavy with tears. “The doctors said that there was little chance you would survive. I couldn't bear the sight of you lying in the hospital with a life support by your side.”
“I appreciate everything you did for me.” he said. “But I never asked for any of that. You could have just left me to die.”
“Jared!”
“You could have just left me to die!” he shot back, his eyes glittering with anger. “At least, I wouldn't have to see you looking like my grandmother. You've no idea how bad you look. I can't even call you my girlfriend out there. I'm ashamed of you.”
“You don't mean those words, do you?” I asked as my throat tightened with tears. “Please tell me that you don't mean those words.”
“I do.” he replied with a cold gaze. “I meant every word that I said. You didn't give me a choice. So, I'd to look for someone else.”
“Five years Jared,” I mentioned. “Five years together, and this is the way you repay me for all that I've done for you? You're such an ingrate.”
“I know that I am.” he said without any form of remorse in his voice. “However, this relationship or whatever it is, is now over.”
“I guess it is.” I muttered under my breath as I sat on the couch.
“Besides, you can't stay here anymore, June.” he said.
“What do you mean by I can't stay here anymore?” I asked, lifting my face to him. “I don't have to leave if you leave.”
“You will have to because I sold the house already.” he said, shrugging a shoulder. “I am sorry, but you'll have to find somewhere else to stay because the new owner will be here tomorrow.”
He turned to leave.
“No, y—you can't do this to me, Jared.” I sobbed, crawling towards him. “You can't do this to me.”
“I am sorry, June.” he bent down, and touched my face with a hand. “But my mind's made up; I can't continue with you. It's best if you start making some calls so that you won't end up on the streets.”
“W—Who is the buyer?” I asked, trying to steady my voice. “Perhaps, I can negotiate with him to give me some time.”
“I have no idea either.” he said, pushing a strand of hair behind my ear. “He decided to buy the place for a very good amount, and I sold it.”
He sighed, and swept his eyes all over the place for a few seconds.
“Although, it would hurt to move out, but I have to, and you have to do the same too.” he said, wiping off the tears on my with his hand. “I am sure you'll be fine. Just be sure to make some calls.”
That said, he stood upright.
“Jared, please,” I held onto his leg as if my life depended on it. “I can't live without you.”
“Here,” he tossed an envelope on the couch. “It is ten thousand dollars, that should be enough to help you start afresh. Don't live a miserable life, June. Take the money, and start over.”
