THE GIRL WHO STOLE THE MOON A Fantasy Mystery Novel Chapter One: The Night the Moon Disappeared At exactly midnight, the moon vanished. Not behind a cloud. Not behind the mountains. It simply disappeared. Thirteen-year-old Amara stood beside her bedroom window, staring at the empty sky. A moment earlier, the moon had been shining brighter than she had ever seen it. Then— Darkness. Amara held her breath. Across the quiet town of Bellhaven, lights flickered on one after another as people opened their windows and stepped outside. “What happened?” someone shouted. “Where did the moon go?” Amara didn’t answer. She couldn’t. Because something strange had appeared on her bedroom floor. A silver feather. She slowly stepped away from the window. The feather glowed faintly, almost as though moonlight were trapped inside it. Amara crouched and picked it up. The instant her fingers touched it, a voice whispered inside her mind. Find the door beneath the old tree. Amara dropped the feather. Her heart raced. She looked around the room. Nobody was there. Then the voice came again. Before the moon returns. Amara swallowed. Outside, the entire town was in confusion. But somewhere beyond Bellhaven, deep inside the forest, something enormous moved between the trees. And it was coming for her. ⸻ Chapter Two: The Old Tree Amara waited until morning. She told herself the voice had been a dream. The feather, however, was still sitting on her desk. It had not disappeared. By sunrise, everyone in Bellhaven was talking about the missing moon. Scientists had no explanation. The news stations called it an unexplained astronomical event. Adults argued about what it meant. But Amara knew something they didn’t. The moon hadn’t disappeared by accident. Someone—or something—had taken it. After school, she walked toward the oldest part of Bellhaven Forest. At the edge of the woods stood a giant tree known as the Whispering Oak. Nobody knew how old it was. According to an old legend, the tree had been there before Bellhaven itself existed. Amara placed her hand against its rough bark. Nothing happened. She sighed. “Of course,” she whispered. “This is ridiculous.” She turned to leave. Then she heard a knock. Not from behind her. From inside the tree. Amara froze. Knock. Knock. Knock. A thin line appeared in the bark. It widened into a doorway. Behind it was a staircase leading downward. Amara stared into the darkness. She knew she should go home. Instead, she stepped inside. The door closed behind her. And the staircase began moving. ⸻ Chapter Three: The World Beneath Amara expected darkness. Instead, she found a city. A vast city hidden beneath the forest. Buildings made of crystal rose into the darkness. Rivers of glowing blue water flowed beneath bridges. Strange birds flew through the air, leaving trails of silver light behind them. Amara couldn’t speak. A boy about her age approached. He wore a dark blue coat and carried a strange golden compass. “You’re late,” he said. Amara frowned. “Late for what?” The boy looked at her carefully. “For saving the moon.” Amara stared at him. “Who are you?” “My name is Kai.” “And how do you know me?” Kai pointed toward the feather in her hand. “Because that feather chose you.” Amara looked down. The silver feather had begun glowing again. Kai’s expression suddenly changed. “Wait.” “What?” He looked past her. Something was approaching through the crystal streets. A shadow. A very large shadow. Kai grabbed Amara’s hand. “Run.” They raced through the underground city. Behind them came a deep roar. Amara looked over her shoulder. Two enormous golden eyes stared back at her from the darkness. Kai pulled her around a corner. “We have to reach the Moon Gate!” “What is the Moon Gate?” Kai stopped. “The place where the moon was taken.” Amara’s stomach tightened. “You mean we can bring it back?” Kai nodded. “If we survive long enough.” ⸻ Chapter Four: The Forbidden Flame The Moon Gate stood at the center of the underground kingdom. It was enormous, covered in ancient symbols. But the gate was broken. At its center floated a dark crystal. Kai pointed at it. “That is the Shadow Stone.” “What does it do?” “It can steal light.” Amara stepped closer. The silver feather suddenly became hot. The Shadow Stone cracked. A tiny flame appeared inside Amara’s hand. It wasn’t red. It wasn’t orange. It was silver. Kai stepped backward. “No…” “What?” He stared at the flame. “That power hasn’t appeared for a hundred years.” Amara looked at her hand. “What power?” Kai whispered: “The Forbidden Flame.” The entire underground city fell silent. Then a voice echoed through the kingdom. The chosen one has awakened. The shadow creature appeared at the end of the street. And behind it stood a mysterious figure wearing a black crown. The figure smiled. “Finally,” he said. “I’ve found you.” Amara’s silver flame grew brighter. And for the first time, she understood something terrifying. The missing moon wasn’t the beginning of the story. It was only the beginning of the war. ⸻ Chapter Five: The Crown of Shadows The crowned stranger raised one hand. Every light in the underground city went out. Amara couldn’t see. She heard Kai shouting. “Don’t use the flame!” “Why?” “Because he’ll know exactly where you are!” A loud crash shook the ground. Then another. Amara reached for Kai. Her fingers found his sleeve. “Where do we go?” “North tunnel!” They ran. Behind them, the stranger laughed. “You cannot run forever, Amara.” She stopped. “How does he know my name?” Kai didn’t answer. They reached the tunnel entrance. A stone door blocked their path. Kai placed the golden compass against it. The door opened. They rushed inside. The moment it closed, the crowned stranger’s voice disappeared. Amara leaned against the wall. “Who was he?” Kai looked at her. “The Shadow King.” Amara’s eyes widened. “I thought he was a legend.” “So did everyone else.” Kai looked at the silver flame still glowing in her hand. “But legends don’t usually come back.” ⸻ Chapter Six: The First Secret They traveled through the tunnels for hours. Eventually, they reached a small room filled with ancient books. Kai lit a lantern. Amara walked toward a huge book sitting on a stone table. Its cover carried the same symbol as her feather. She opened it. The first page contained a drawing of a girl holding a silver flame. Amara’s breath caught. The girl looked exactly like her. Below the picture were six words: The flame chooses the bloodline. Amara turned the page. Another drawing. Another girl. Then another. Generation after generation. All of them carried the same flame. Amara looked at Kai. “My family?” Kai nodded slowly. “Your ancestors were the Guardians of the Moon.” “Then why didn’t anyone tell me?” “Because the Guardians disappeared.” Amara stared at the book. “Disappeared where?” Kai hesitated. Then he pointed toward the final page. There was only one sentence. When the moon falls, the Guardian must awaken. Amara closed the book. A distant bell rang. Kai’s face went pale. “What?” “The Shadow King found us.” The walls began shaking. Dust fell from the ceiling. Amara stood. The silver flame burned brighter than ever. This time, she didn’t feel afraid. She felt ready. ⸻ Chapter Seven: The Battle Begins The stone door exploded inward. The Shadow King’s soldiers entered. They were made of smoke and darkness. Kai raised his golden compass. A beam of light struck the first creature. It disappeared. Another creature lunged. Amara raised her hand. The silver flame exploded outward. The entire room filled with light. The shadow creatures vanished. Kai stared at her. “You just destroyed them.” Amara looked at her hand. “I didn’t know I could do that.” “You didn’t.” “What?” Kai pointed at the flame. “The flame did.” Before Amara could respond, the Shadow King entered. He slowly clapped. “Impressive.” Amara stepped forward. “Give us the moon.” The Shadow King smiled. “You still don’t understand.” “Understand what?” He removed his crown. Underneath it was an old man’s face. Amara froze. She recognized him. She had seen his photograph before. In her grandmother’s house. The Shadow King was her grandfather. ⸻ Chapter Eight: The Truth About Grandfather Amara couldn’t move. “My grandfather died years ago.” The Shadow King smiled sadly. “No, Amara.” He stepped closer. “I was taken.” “By who?” “The moon.” Amara stared at him. Kai lowered his compass. The Shadow King continued. “Your family believes the Guardians protect the moon.” He shook his head. “They don’t.” “Then what do they do?” “They protect the world from what lives inside it.” The ground trembled. A crack appeared beneath Amara’s feet. Something enormous roared below. The Shadow King looked frightened. For the first time, Amara saw fear in his eyes. “You must listen to me,” he said. “The moon isn’t missing.” Amara whispered: “Then where is it?” The Shadow King looked toward the ceiling. “It is hiding.” “From what?” He pointed toward the darkness beneath the city. “From that.” A gigantic eye opened beneath the floor. And the underground kingdom began to collapse. ⸻ Chapter Nine: The Thing Beneath Amara and Kai ran. The underground city shook violently. Buildings collapsed. Bridges broke apart. People fled in every direction. Above them, the enormous creature emerged. It was larger than the city itself. Its body was covered in dark scales, and its eyes glowed like dying stars. Kai shouted: “It’s the Void Beast!” Amara looked at him. “What is that?” “The reason the moon disappeared.” The creature opened its mouth. A wave of darkness swept across the city. Amara raised her hand. The silver flame appeared. But this time, it wasn’t enough. The darkness pushed against her. Her feet slid backward. “I can’t hold it!” Kai grabbed her shoulder. “You don’t have to.” “What?” “You have to remember what the flame is.” Amara looked at him. “It’s not a weapon,” Kai said. “It’s a light.” Amara closed her eyes. She thought about home. Her family. Her friends. The people of Bellhaven. Then she thought about the moon. She opened her eyes. The flame became enormous. The darkness shattered. And somewhere far above them… the moon began to shine again. But it wasn’t white. It was red. ⸻ Chapter Ten: The Red Moon Everyone stopped. The red moon appeared in the sky. The Void Beast screamed. The Shadow King looked toward the heavens. “No…” Amara stared upward. “What happened?” Kai whispered: “The moon has awakened.” The red light spread across the sky. Then a voice echoed through every living thing in the world. The first Guardian has returned. Amara’s silver flame disappeared. A strange symbol appeared on her palm. Kai stared at it. “What is it?” Amara didn’t answer. Because she suddenly heard another voice. Not the Shadow King. Not Kai. Not the feather. A voice from the moon itself. Come to me. Amara looked at the red moon. She knew what she had to do. The war was not over. It had only begun. And somewhere beyond the moon, someone was waiting for her. Someone who knew the truth about her family. Someone who had been watching her from the beginning. Someone who was about to reveal why she had been chosen. To be continued…
