CHAPTER ELEVEN

523 Words
The Wife He Forgot For three days, Elena waited. Every time a car stopped outside, she thought Adrian had returned. Leo kept asking when Daddy was coming home. Lily slept in Adrian's old shirt because it still smelled like him. Elena tried to stay strong for them. Then, on the fourth day, she received a call from the hospital. She rushed there with the children. When she entered Adrian's room, her heart broke with relief. He was awake. "Adrian..." He looked toward her. Their eyes met. Elena smiled through her tears. "It's me." Adrian stared at her. There was no recognition in his eyes. "I'm sorry," he said quietly. "Who are you?" Elena froze. Her smile disappeared. "I'm Elena." He shook his head. "I don't know you." Her heart shattered. She stepped closer. "You do. I'm your wife." Adrian looked confused. "My wife?" Before Elena could explain, Richard entered the room. He immediately stepped between them. "She's confused, son." Elena turned toward him in disbelief. "Don't lie to him." Richard remained calm. "Adrian, you were injured. You lived with this woman during your previous period of memory loss." Adrian looked at Elena again. "Is that true?" Elena's eyes filled with tears. "Yes, but you're not remembering the rest." Richard continued before she could speak. "You don't have to worry. We'll take you home." Elena grabbed Adrian's hand. "Please. Look at me." He gently pulled his hand away. "I'm sorry." Those two words destroyed her. Later, Elena showed the doctors their marriage certificate. She showed photographs of Adrian holding their children. She showed videos of him playing with Leo and Lily. But Adrian watched everything as if he were looking at someone else's life. He couldn't remember. Nothing reached him. Victoria arrived that evening. She walked into the room with tears in her eyes and immediately embraced Adrian. "I was so worried about you." Adrian looked at her. For some reason, her face felt familiar. Not enough to remember love. But enough to make him trust her. Victoria noticed Elena standing nearby. She quietly held Adrian's hand. "Don't worry. I'll help you remember everything." Elena looked at them. She understood. Victoria had been waiting for this moment. That night, Elena sat alone outside the hospital. She held the children's photographs against her chest. Five years had not passed yet. But it already felt like she had lost Adrian all over again. She had once found him when he had no name, no family, and no memory. She had given him a home. She had loved him. She had given him children. And now that his old life had returned... She was the stranger. Elena wiped her tears. She looked at the hospital window. "I'll make you remember us." Inside the room, Adrian suddenly woke from a dream. He saw a woman standing in the rain. She was crying. Two little children were beside her. He tried to reach them. But before he could see her face— He woke up. His heart was racing. For the first time since the accident, Adrian felt something he couldn't explain. He missed someone. He didn't know who.
