PROLOGUE
Five Years Later
The little boy stood on the sidewalk with a paper airplane clutched tightly in his hand.
"Mommy, is that him?"
Elena Carter stopped walking.
Her heart seemed to stop with her.
Across the street, surrounded by security guards and reporters, stood the man she had spent five years trying to forget.
Adrian Vale.
Her husband.
The father of her children.
The man who had once held her every night and whispered that he could never live without her.
And now...
He didn't even know her.
Adrian stepped out of a black limousine wearing an expensive charcoal suit. Cameras flashed around him.
He looked exactly the way he had before the accident.
Powerful.
Cold.
Untouchable.
The billionaire heir had returned to the world that belonged to him.
Elena's fingers tightened around the hand of her daughter.
"Mommy?"
She looked down.
Lily's innocent eyes searched her face.
"Why are you crying?" Elena quickly wiped her cheek.
"I'm not crying, sweetheart."
Her son, Leo, looked across the street.
"Is that our daddy?"
Elena couldn't answer.
Because Adrian had just turned in their direction.
Their eyes met.
For one brief second, the world disappeared.
Elena remembered everything.
A tiny apartment.
A rainy night.
His first smile.
His arms around her.
Their wedding.
Two newborn babies.
His promise.
"I'll always find my way back to you."
Then Adrian's expression changed.
He looked at her politely.
Like she was a stranger.
"I'm sorry," he said when their paths crossed.
His voice was calm.
"Have we met before?"
Elena's heart shattered.
Again.
