CHAPTER TWO

288 Words
The Man With No Name The hospital needed a name for their unidentified patient. Elena looked at him. "What should I call you?" He frowned. "I don't know." "You need a name." "Give me one." She laughed. "Seriously?" He nodded. Elena thought for a moment. "Adrian." "Why Adrian?" "I don't know." "Then Adrian it is." She smiled. "Adrian." He repeated it quietly. "Adrian." Something about the name felt strangely familiar. But nothing else came. No family. No home. No childhood. No memories. Nothing. The doctors discharged him after several days. Elena had no choice but to take him to her apartment temporarily. "Just until you remember something," she warned. Adrian nodded. "I won't cause trouble." "You better not." Their first evening together was awkward. Adrian stood in the tiny kitchen staring at the refrigerator. "Where's the food?" Elena stared at him. "Inside the refrigerator." He opened it. There was almost nothing inside. A few eggs. Half a loaf of bread. Some vegetables. He looked at her. "That's all?" "Yes. Do you normally eat this little?" "Do you normally interrogate someone's refrigerator?" He smiled. "No. Then sit down." She cooked eggs and rice. Adrian watched her. "You cook?" "Obviously." "Do you always do everything yourself?" Elena paused. "Pretty much." He didn't ask further. That night, he slept on the couch. Elena gave him a blanket. "You can take the bed." "No." "You need rest." "So do you." She stared at him. "You barely know me." "I know enough." "What?" "You helped me when you didn't have to." Elena didn't know what to say. She turned away. "Good night, Adrian." "Good night, Elena." She walked into her bedroom. Neither slept easily. Because something had changed. They were no longer strangers.
