Lucas was crouched on the floor, carefully helping Stella put on her socks. His movements were so gentle they could almost drip with tenderness.
Stella's cheeks flushed, her hands gripping his neck tightly, unwilling to let go. He lifted her onto his lap, soothing her softly.
At that moment, Jenna's stomach felt like it was on fire. But the pain in her chest was a thousand times sharper than the stomachache.
All her hopes, patience, and self-comfort crumbled in an instant. Jenna, blinded by rage, lunged forward to pull them apart.
Lucas reacted immediately, shielding Stella in his arms. He pushed Jenna hard, catching her off guard, and she fell heavily onto the cold floor.
"What are you doing!"
Lucas's face was twisted with irritation, his voice sharp. "Acting like a shameless woman in public? You're humiliating yourself!"
Jenna struggled to lift her head, her voice trembling uncontrollably. "Why? Lucas, why are you doing this to me?"
Stella poked her head out from Lucas's embrace, tears streaming down her face. "Jen, I'm sorry… Lucas and I… we love each other. We know it's wrong, and we tried to separate, but cutting me off from him would have been like killing me…"
"Love each other?" Jenna shook with rage. "So you feel justified stealing my husband? I trusted you as my best friend, how can you be so shameless?"
"Don't speak to Stella like that!" Lucas immediately defended her, holding Stella even tighter. "It's all my fault. She's not well right now. Anything else can wait until she recovers."
With that, he carried Stella away.
Then, Jenna felt a sudden warmth below her waist, a sticky liquid running down her leg.
Jenna looked down and froze, her eyes widening at the shocking red. Panic surged through her. "Lucas… help me…" she begged, her voice trembling.
Lucas's eyes snapped to the blood pooling around Jenna, his pupils constricting.
But the Stella in his arms suddenly went limp, fainting. "Stella!" Lucas panicked, all attention now focused on the woman in his arms.
He glanced at Jenna briefly. "We're at Riverbend Hospital. You'll be fine."
With that, he hurried off, carrying Stella, leaving Jenna collapsed on the floor. The sharp pain in her chest and the blood loss left her exhausted, her vision flickering in and out.
She watched Lucas's anxious figure disappear, the one she had relied on for countless days and nights, yet he abandoned her when she needed him most.
Jenna's vision went black, and she lost consciousness. When she opened her eyes again, Lucas was by her bedside.
His face was heavy with guilt, his voice weighed down with grief, each word hitting her heart like a hammer. "Jen… the baby is gone."
Jenna froze, her mind blank. The next moment, a pain so intense it seemed to tear her chest apart spread through her, every breath tasting of blood and agony.
Tears streamed down her face uncontrollably.
Lucas wrapped her tightly in his arms, repeating over and over, "I'm sorry, Jen… I'm so sorry."
Jenna cried until she was completely exhausted.
When her sobs subsided, Lucas released her, red-eyed but resolute. "Jen, I will break up with Stella."
He admitted his momentary lapse. He explained that he and Jenna were too similar, both quiet and introverted, and being together so long sometimes felt stifling.
Stella, in contrast, was lively and radiant, bold in expressing her love and desires. Her vibrancy had irresistibly drawn him in.
Jenna felt both absurd and heartbroken. Her chest ached, making it hard to breathe. Back then, they had clung to each other precisely because of their shared quiet nature, surviving the toughest times together.
How did he grow to resent that calmness and yearn for another kind of warmth?
"Jen, the one I love most has always been you. Please forgive me this time," Lucas murmured, trying to soothe her. "We'll have children in the future, a complete and happy family."
Lucas had been everything in Jenna's life. Since childhood, he had been her playmate, classmate, and husband, the only light in her dark world.
She couldn't let go, yet the wound carved by his betrayal made forgiveness impossible.
After leaving the hospital, Lucas tended to Jenna more meticulously than ever, caring for every detail of her life. Patient and attentive, he seemed truly remorseful, trying to make amends for the past.
Jenna's heart slowly softened under his persistent gentleness. Just as she resolved to give him another chance, she stepped unknowingly into an abyss from which there would be no return.
