The Keeper of the Seventh Moon
Chapter One: The Dream Beneath the Seventh Moon
The moon had never looked so close.
It hung above the world like a pearl suspended in an endless sea of stars, bathing the meadow in silver light. Every blade of grass shimmered as though woven from glass, and thousands of glowing threads drifted lazily through the air, dancing with the evening breeze.
Lira stood barefoot among white flowers that reached her knees.
The petals brushed cool against her ankles, and the earth beneath her feet felt soft and alive, as if it were breathing with her. She knew this place. She knew the hush of it, the way the moonlight seemed to settle into her skin. She had dreamed of it since childhood, waking each time with her heart aching and her hands empty.
Yet every time she awoke, it vanished like mist.
Tonight felt different.
The threads around her glowed brighter, humming softly as if they recognized someone she could not yet see. The sound trembled through her bones, familiar in a way that made her chest tighten with a strange, painful hope. It was the same feeling she got when she touched a frayed promise and felt it mend beneath her fingers—warm, delicate, almost sacred.
A warm hand brushed against hers.
She turned.
A man stood behind her.
His face was hidden beneath moonlight and shadow, but his presence felt impossibly familiar. The air around him seemed to shift, as though the threads themselves leaned toward him. Lira’s breath caught in her throat. She could not see his features clearly, yet every instinct in her body reached for him.
Without a word, he gently slipped his fingers between hers.
The countless silver threads floating around them wrapped lightly around their joined hands before drifting away again. The touch sent a shiver up her arm, not from cold but from recognition so sharp it almost hurt. Her pulse fluttered wildly, and for one dizzy moment she felt as though she had been waiting for this exact touch all her life.
“You found me,” he whispered.
His voice sounded like a memory she had forgotten.
Lira smiled before she even realized she was smiling. It came from somewhere deep and aching inside her, from a place that had been lonely for so long she had stopped naming the loneliness.
“I’ve been looking for you.”
She didn’t know why those words left her lips.
She only knew they were true.
He stepped closer.
Close enough that she could hear his breathing.
Close enough to feel the warmth of his body despite the cool night air.
The nearness of him made her skin prickle. She could smell rain on stone and something faintly metallic, like the air before a storm. It should have unsettled her, but instead it steadied her, as if her body recognized him before her mind could.
He reached up, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear with astonishing tenderness.
His fingertips lingered against her cheek.
She leaned into the touch without thinking.
It felt safe.
It felt like home.
The world around them faded until only the moon remained.
“I know you,” she whispered.
The words trembled out of her, fragile and certain all at once. Her throat tightened around them, because knowing him felt impossible and inevitable in the same breath.
“You will.”
His forehead rested gently against hers.
For one endless heartbeat, neither of them spoke.
They simply breathed together beneath the Seventh Moon.
The air itself seemed alive.
Every glowing thread surrounding them began weaving together into an endless constellation above their heads. Lira watched them with a strange ache in her chest, feeling the pull of each strand as though they were tugging at something inside her, something old and waiting. The sight filled her with wonder so sharp it bordered on grief.
He lifted her hand and kissed her knuckles.
A single tear escaped Lira’s eye, though she couldn’t explain why.
Joy.
Longing.
Grief.
All three emotions collided within her heart.
He lifted her chin with surprising gentleness.
Before she could catch her breath, his lips found hers.
The kiss was unfamiliar, yet it stirred something deep within her—as though her heart had known him long before her mind ever could. She hesitated for only a heartbeat before instinct guided her to follow the slow rhythm of his lips.
It was soft.
Tender.
Sweet enough to make her forget the world around them.
His hand cradled the back of her neck while the other settled carefully at her waist, drawing her closer until only the warmth between them remained. Somewhere along the way, Lira realized her own hands had found his chest.
Beneath her fingertips, his heartbeat was strong and steady.
The air around them seemed to grow warmer. The silver threads drifting through the meadow shimmered brighter, circling them like silent witnesses beneath the Seventh Moon.
When their lips finally parted, neither of them spoke.
She looked up at him.
He stood tall beneath the moonlight, its silver glow tracing the sharp lines of his face until he seemed less like a man and more like one of the ancient gods from forgotten stories. Yet it wasn’t his beauty that stole her breath.
It was the way he looked at her.
There was longing in his eyes.
Devotion.
And an unmistakable sadness that made her chest ache.
As though he already knew this moment could not last.
He brushed his thumb gently across her cheek.
“I’ve waited for you,” he whispered.
The words settled somewhere deep inside her, awakening emotions she couldn’t explain.
Without thinking, she rose onto her toes and kissed him again.
This time, slower.
More certain.
Their foreheads rested together as the world faded into silence. His fingers traced the curve of her back with reverence, as though he feared she might disappear if he held her too tightly.
Lira closed her eyes.
Every place he touched seemed to awaken, sending gentle waves of warmth through her body. Her pulse quickened, not from fear but from the strange certainty that she belonged in this moment.
He leaned close, his lips brushing lightly against her temple before lingering near her ear.
She shivered.
A quiet laugh escaped him.
“So sensitive,” he murmured, smiling.
Embarrassed, she lowered her gaze.
He lifted her chin once more, smiling with such tenderness that the feeling of shyness melted into trust.
Around them, the moonlight brightened.
The silver threads rose into the sky, weaving together like a living constellation.
For a fleeting moment, there was no prophecy.
No Keeper.
No forgotten kingdom.
Only two souls who had somehow found each other beneath the Seventh Moon.
And then—
The threads snapped.
The meadow dissolved into darkness.
Lira awoke with a gasp, her hand instinctively reaching for the warmth that was no longer there.
