“No?” She expected resistance but not a flat-out refusal. She began to worry that if she didn’t talk to him soon, she wouldn’t have an opportunity to later. She would miss her chance and the pack’s future would be lost; her stomach began to knot at the thought of this.
“He has retired for the day and will not-“ And then he is cut short as the door reopens behind him, Eric is standing there half dressed and his abs out on full display. She immediately bowed her head and hoped she wasn’t about to be reprimanded and turned away.
“It’s okay, she may come in.” He nodded to Abraham and made his way back into the room. She felt her stomach twist even more. Yes, she wanted to talk to him but not with him half naked. She had to get in and hurry. If anyone came back and she was caught leaving his room, what would they think?
Abraham stepped aside, glaring at her as she slipped in behind him. “You can go, Abraham. I’m sure we will be fine.” Eric said, pouring a glass of scotch. “Would you like any?” He tilted the glass to her, his voice was serious but not angry and she couldn’t make out his face.
“Sure.” She reached for the glass, hoping the alcohol would still her nerves and she would be able to do what she needed to. The glass was cool to the touch, and he watched her intently as she brought the cup to her lips. She was always a fan of the drink. It was a drink for making deals and leaders, not for dainty women who raise children and support a husband. She breathed the heavenly scent in before taking a nice sip, the warm liquid coating her insides.
“Your father has business to propose in his sleep?” Again, no emotion, serious but not angry. Disbelief but more teasing, it was as if she was still being assessed.
“I confess, it is my proposal, but I did not think your Beta would bother you for anything less than an Alpha’s request.” She straightened her shoulders but kept her eyes downcast. Compared to him, she felt small, but she refused to cower, and she had to take up space.
He c****d an eyebrow, silently inviting or maybe daring her to continue. She couldn’t tell. He raised his own cup to his mouth, and she took it as a sign to continue. “I have looked for a mate and I cannot find him. I cannot let my pack be dissolved into another. I don’t want to be in the Redtooth Clan Pack, the Golden Claw is my pack. I want to be Alpha.” She paused here, waiting to see if he would shoot her down. When he didn’t, the rest of the words poured out of her.
“Make me Alpha, give me the title, and I will make this pack more successful than it has ever been. Make me Alpha and I will be forever loyal; my pack will be forever in your debt. I will do anything you wish for the title.” He stared at her and took her glass, putting them both on the table.
“Anything?” He asked, sliding his leg between hers and slipping his fingers loosely around her throat, pressing her against the wall. "I've heard the rumors that the eldest daughter remains...intact." He said, fingers trailing down her neck and down her stomach.
Her breath caught in her chest, Cerri's hackles rising. She had to, for her mother, she promised she would take care of her father and take care of the pack. She promised she would make her mother proud. “Anything.” She said, it came out as soft as a whisper but confidently and for that she was grateful. She stared into his eyes, still so unreadable and his aura so thick around her it was hard to breathe.
“And if I don’t give you the title?” He breathed into her ear, his scent was intoxicating and she froze. “If I refuse and let your pack dissolve? Your family’s pack has been the right hand of the Lycans, but there is no reason that cannot change. There is no reason the position can’t transfer over to a new pack.” Her heart sped and not just from the heat between her legs, but from the panic of losing everything.
“Then, I have nothing to lose.” She didn’t move an inch, his lips almost touching her neck. “And until the day I die, I will be nothing but a thorn in your side. But give me what I want, and you gain me. An asset and in naming me so, you make a statement that you are not willing to give up the things that are yours. Letting the title swap hands, letting whoever wants to meddle in your affairs. You lose power, authority, and one day maybe even your crown.” He let out a growl at the last statement, letting it hang in the air, and backed away from her.
“You may have a point, but I need something more.” He stated, smoothing his hair and straightening his tie.
“Anything.” She said breathlessly, not even realizing she had been holding her breath.
“The first is that if you are to promise your allegiance as well as those of your pack and family, you must have heirs. I do not care if they are with a mate or not, I will require loyalty when you are long gone as well.” He held a finger up, this was the first of a list of requirements.
“By what time?” This seemed like a reasonable request from her. She would have to marry sooner or later to a mate or no mate. While traditionally her family married their fated mate, it was not unheard of for someone to not find their mate and have to choose one for themselves.
“By the 1st anniversary of you gaining your title, you must at least be with child.” She nodded her head in agreement.
“You will be my eyes and ears among the werewolves. If you hear even a suggestion that someone questions me, you will report to me immediately. I will require you to have a weekly meeting with me.” He raised a second finger to join the first.
“You will never speak to me like you have today, otherwise the consequences will be dire. You, my girl, are lucky that I am in a good mood and feeling merciful since your father is ill. Your father has been good to me, and that is the only reason I am even considering your request.” A third finger. Amelia nodded again, head reeling. She didn’t really think this would work.
“You will have until your father dies. At that time, your pack will dissolve and be absorbed into the Redtooth Clan Pack. If you wish, you could become a rogue, but I really don’t recommend you do that.” Finger number four. She swallowed. She had no clue how long her father had left, but it didn’t seem like very long.
“And lastly,” he said, lifting up his last finger, palm open, “I am going to need you to kill someone for me.”
