Hope's Peak Daily
A website created by the students of Hope's Peak Academy to gossip, post, meet friends and do other things.
This website could be accessed only by school students. Everybody Shuichi knew had an account and they were all using it for different reasons. "Atua wants to share the art through social media!" said Angie, "I want to show off some of my photos!" said Mahiru, a girl from a different class, "I just like talking to people!" said yet another girl.
Saihara didn't really want an account, but Kaede forced him to get one anyway. "It'll be fun! You'll get to make new friends!". Saihara was reluctant to the idea. Saihara was not the kind of person to post things or anything. Social media wasn't really his thing. He preferred his books over talking to people and sometimes, Kaede thought it was all his life was. A person locked in a no-escape library. But there was also another reason.
Shuichi's life was slightly messy. Nobody knew why. Even Shuichi couldn't really figure out the source of the problem. But he knew what feelings resonated within him during this time. He also knew that even if he knew what they were, he couldn't address them properly. Alone even if he was surrounded by his closest, optimistic friends, Sad even though there's no reason to, Dull with a view that showcased a life with no color. But most importantly...
Empty.
Something or someone was missing in Shuichi's life. What it was that he was exactly missing, he didn't know. It made him feel incomplete. When he decided to confess this to Kaede she said he needs to find that 'somebody'. And If he wasn't gonna make friends in person, he can do it on the internet. Shuichi had to admit, talking on the internet was a lot easier than to do it in person, however, he still preferred to not engage in conversations if he didn't need to. The idea that Kaede came up with was for Shuichi to join the chatroom Kaede started. She said everybody in the school can join and that we can use it to meet more people and talk daily.
It was a cool idea, especially with the fact nobody used their name in the username and the avatars were also didn't give clues. You didn't even know if you knew the person you were speaking with. Kirumi, for example, made a friend by the username "Card Queen" who turned out to be Celestia Lundenburg, a girl from a different class. And Chiaki was able to meet a programmer called Fujisaki. On this chatroom, everyone seemed to get along great.
It was late at night when Saihara joined. He had just gone through a ton of studying and just needed something, ANYTHING to ease of his nerves. He hoped Kaito or Kaede would be online, but then again the entire point of this page was to 'make new friends!'. I sighed I typed out a simple "Hello." and decided to maybe doodle on paper out of sheer boredom.
"If nobody answers in 10 minutes, I might just go to bed." Saihara said as he swirled his pen on the paper. It was silent. Saihara was just about to go to sleep when the screen lit up.
"Hi."
Saihara looked at the username. It wasn't one he could recognize. It wasn't Rantaro, Kaede, Kaito or even Maki... It was somebody by the username 'TheKingOfMischief'. He wondered what they were doing up so late at night.
"How are you?" was the message Saihara got immediately after. He then noticed a small box on the bottom. 2 people online in chat. It was just him and TheKingOfMischief. "Fine I guess, I just had lots of homework dropped on me by Ms. Yukizome" Yukizome was our school teacher. She was very nice and supportive. But when it came to homework...
Oh boy.
"Yeah, I hate her. She's a b***h. She also happened to drop on me a lot of homework today so you're not alone."
"Wow, way to be vulgar there."
"Nishishi~ It's a lie. She's not that baaad. It can always be worse."
"Yeah, I guess you have a point there. What's your name by the way?"
"I prefer not to give away my name. That's part of the fun, right?"
"Fun...?"
"It's almost like a detective figuring out the identity of some masked criminal. But I'm pretty sure I know who you are."
"Oh really?"
"Yeah. I can tell it from the username. Nobody beats you at being shy and emo, Saihara-chan~"
"How did you know that it was really me? A-Am I really that emo?"
"You walk in all dark clothes and cover your eyes with a hat. Sounds emo too me, you angsty edgelord. I wonder if you can guess me."
"Nope. I have literally no idea."
"Aww~ My sweet detective doesn't know who I am! I guess you'll just have to get better"
"Can you give me a hint?"
"Alright. I have purple eyes."
"That's it?!"
"Well, you'll need to try to hard to find me, my beloved. I give away fake information about me all the time! For all you know everything I said up until now doesn't have to be true. I could be a liar after all~"
"B-Beloved?!"
"Don't take it so seriously! Unless you want to, that is."
"Uh well I uh"
"Nishishi~ Just a lie, Shuichi"
Saihara's felt a warm feeling in his chest. Why did this person annoy him.... and at the same time manage to fascinate him so deeply?! It... didn't make much sense to him. But before Shuichi gave himself more time to think this over, his mother's voice cut through "Shuichi honey! Don't stay up late! I don't want you to look like a zombie like the last time you missed sleep." Shuichi sighed. For some odd reason, he didn't want to stop talking to this strange student he just met.
"Sorry, I have to go. My mom doesn't allow me to stay up long because I look like an absolute zombie if I do."
"Yup, you sure do."
"Thank you for that compliment."
"Aww, please don't hate me Shuichi! ; - ;"
"Who said I hate you? You intrigued me"
"Intrigued you? Sounds like a pick-up line. Are you trying to flirt with me?"
"Maybe."
"Nishishi~ How cute!"
Okay, why did he just say that? Why was he flirting with a stranger he met a minute ago. And why did feel...right? Was he just desperately alone or was this something else..? Saihara hid his face in the desk, lightly banging his head against it. Saihara rested his chin on the desk. Whoever this person was, he knew one thing...
"Hey....would like to I don't know...talk again tomorrow?"
"Sure sounds great! But....the same hour, okay?"
----------------------------------------------------------------
Next day was the same. Shuichi walked back home, was greeted by his mom and worked on assignments with quick breaks to watch some of the different posts on Hope's Peak Daily. When the hour rang on the clock, Shuichi noticed the small notification. Someone invited him to a private chat. It was TheKingOfMischief. Shuichi smiled. He felt, that the empty feeling wasn't as strong as it used to be. "Hi, Shuichi!" TheKingOfMischief texted a smiley face at the end of the message.
"Hi. How are you doing?"
"I'm doing just fine. Just in bed, I'm supposed to be sleeping, but I wanted to talk to you."
"Talk to me?! If you're tired, you shouldn't waste time with me"
"Well, maybe I'll go."
"What?"
"It's a lie! I want to talk to you, cause you're my friend!"
"Fine... but you didn't have to force yourself awake."
"I'm not allowed my phone at all cause my mom thinks I'm an addict, but I managed to pick-lock the drawer my mom keeps it in. I don't have friends to talk to throughout school, so I might as well text you while she's asleep at night."
"Well since you made this effort to talk to me, I owe you a conversation."
"Yeah, you do."
They talked for hours. Saihara quickly lost track of time, engulfed in the jokes and lies of his friend. After a while he realized. The feeling he's been having for the longest of times was less present. Saihara felt a warm feeling in my chest and his cheeks hurt from constant smiling, which might've been because of the number of mind games and memes, TheKingOfMischief sent. He has admitted he likes circuses and clowns, for they make people smile with unexplained tricks. When Shuichi looked at the clock, he finally realized how late it was. If he didn't go to bed soon, he won't be able to get up for school.
"Hey, I really need to sleep now, but can I talk to you tomorrow, the same hour I assume?"
"Yeah...I'd like that :) "
----------------------------------------------------------------
It's been a couple of weeks and Saihara couldn't help but talk to his mysterious friend, TheKingOfMischief. They talked together to each other, now on their own private chat, all the time. TheKingOfMischief liked games, memes, lies and teasing and toying with Shuichi's mind in a mean but innocent way. He was like a little child disobeying the rules. Shuichi loved chatting with him. He loved his child-like but yet mischievous nature. It was amusing and chatting with him made his day. At some point Saihara considered. Has he maybe fallen for the person?
"Hey, Earth to Shuichi!
"Wha-"
Once again it happened. Shuichi got so invested talking to TheKingOfMischief that he forgot where he even was. His friends and he were all sitting in their usual talking spot. Under one of the sakura trees behind the academy. They were all looking at him, confused as to what could've peaked his interest so much, he had lost his touch with reality for a moment.
"What's so interesting there on your phone, Shuichi? You've been smiling to yourself while glued to the screen for over 5 minutes!" Rantaro chuckled. While Rantaro was talking, Kaede managed to snatch Shuichi's phone right out his hands. "Hey!" Shuichi yelled trying to get back his phone from Kaede.
"Wow! Shuichi has a little friend on Hope's Peak Daily!" Kaede said as Shuichi finally got his phone back. Well, too late. "So do you have like a crush on this person?" Maki asked, her expression bored as always. Shuichi blushed. His cheeks were the color of a strawberry.
"I'll take that as a yes." Maki said as Kaede squeaked from excitement "Oh! Shuichi has a crush! So any idea on who it might be??". She was so excited, it was making Shuichi more embarrassed by the second.
"No, he prefers to be very incognito. I don't understand why but, he thinks of this like some game. A mystery of who's on the other side. A detective and culprit sort of scenario. The only clue he gave me about himself is that he has purple eyes." Shuichi sighed. He had to be honest with himself. He loves this person. No doubt about it.
"Well, a lot of people has purple eyes in school, at least the ones I know of. Toko, Kyoko, Ouma, Mikan, Tsumugi's new contacts are purple. Tons..." Kaede said quietly. Shuichi
"Well, why don't you just confess? You can have an internet relationship" Kaito asked "And then he'll ask you for nud-OUCH!" Kaede flicked Iruma-san before she could finish one of her dirty lines. Shuichi shook his head. He thought that maybe the idea of a relationship would scare his friend. He was already self-conscious enough to not give away his name, so how would he react to the idea of meeting in public?!
"Well, I don't know. What if I only freak him out? What if I scare off the person I have a crush and they won't talk to me anymore? I don't want to ruin what we have but at the same time... I'd really want to meet him in person." he sighed. TheKingOfMischief was such an enigma. So interesting, and so fun to talk to. But who was he?
"Well, Shuichi you can always try. What if he'll find it fun?" Kaede said. Saihara still looked hesitant. For the rest of the day, he was bombarded by others encouraging him to just not be a wuss and JUST DO IT.
"C'mon, you can do it!"
"Atua will give you strength!"
"I put a love spell on TheKingOfMischief so that he'll accept your confession..."
"I'm rooting for ya pal."
Saihara sighed as he stared at the computer screen. TheKingOfMischief was online and they have once again been talking about different things. "Hey. I need to tell you something important cause....if I keep it a secret for much longer, I don't know what I'm gonna do"
"Hmm? What does my beloved Saihara-chan want to say~?"
"Stop calling me beloved! You're making me a blushing mess!
"Was that it?
"No, and you know that, so please, take this more seriously?"
"Okay, okay Shuichi I'm listening."
"It's just... Ever since I've started talking to you I've been happier than ever. And every time I texted you, I would completely zone out and forget where I even am before someone reminds me. It's just, you're so wonderful and I think I might be..."
"...Falling in love with you?
"Y-Yeah... Please don't be scared, I don't want to lose you."
"But Saihara-chan you don't even know if I'm not some boy! Besides somebody told me that you were dating Kaede"
"But I'm attracted to both boys and girls... and Kaede has been going out with Miu Iruma for over a month."
"...Oh..."
"Yup..."
"Well, this is slightly awkward, but it's not like you'd like me in real life anyway. Everybody finds me annoying. Y'know for my lies and all. I simply like telling lies... It's all I know really..."
"Listen to me. I managed to fall crazy in love in a span of a couple of weeks. I don't care if others find you annoying. I don't even care if they'd hate me forever. You are one of the most intriguing, interesting people I ever met and I know that... you're the kind of person I'd like to be with."
"Saihara-chan, I... I loved you for a long time but I knew that nobody, especially someone as wonderful as you, can love me. So please, meet me by the sakura tree behind the school. When everyone has gone. Then only... you can tell if you really love me."
"Alright, I will."
"I'll be waiting...my beloved Shuichi"
And thus Saihara and TheKingOfMischief ended talking for today. Saihara couldn't understand why they would stress over this so much. Then again this didn't give him any clues. Most purple-eyed people Kaede mentioned had made it a characteristic trait to not like each other. In any case, he was going to see the person he loved in a little while and find out the reason they were so self-conscious about this.
----------------------------------------------------------------
"Yay, you confessed! So how did it go!?!" Kaede squeaked as she basically jumped around Shuichi in a bunny-like fashion.
"He said that nobody really likes him and finds him annoying... and that I wouldn't love him if I saw who he was" Shuichi sighed looking at the ground. Sure his behavior might be annoying to some but it's fascinating in its own unique way.
"Well, we will leave you to it. We don't want to intrude in your conversation." Rantaro said in his calm voice. Others nodded. Shuichi smiled, that his friends weren't too nosy when it came to his love life. "Thanks guys."
The rest of the day went smoothly, but Shuichi's mind was only focused on the identity of TheKingOfMischief. All Shuichi's thought about was 'my beloved'. He called him that and he always chuckled when that happened. It felt weird calling him that. A warm feeling was rising in his chest. I couldn't quite grasp it. Nobody in our school was singled out, or at least... He didn't think so. Some might've acted as though they were the worst, but other students just comforted them or would walk away. No insults.
It was the end of school. Last period has finished, not only for Shuichi's class but for all remaining students on school grounds. Kaede waved to Shuichi as she headed out of the school and to her home. Other of his classmates left. The only reason Kaede was so late at school is that she had piano lessons with him. Shuichi waved back with a smile.
He inhaled deeply, before exhaling. This was happening. He was gonna meet the special person that he fell for. He slowly made his way to the sakura tree. A light breeze blew, making the leaves of nearby trees flutter, blowing off Shuichi's hair and showing his amber eyes. He could see a figure under the large sakura tree, the appearance of which was hidden in the shadow. The person was standing still, clearly waiting for him. Shuichi walked up to the tree, grass made a rustling sound as it scratched against his shoes.
The figure quickly turned around. The sound caught his attention. When Shuichi decided to step closer, the figure started to slowly walk out of the shadow. Shuichi's eyes widened at the sight of who it was.
His classmate, Kokichi Ouma
Ouma was an annoying student for a couple of the first years, but as time went on, it felt as though he disappeared. Nobody remembered him or ever mentioned him. He was just... there. The more Shuichi thought about it, he realized that as his pranks became less frequent, more bruises appeared on his pale face.
But here he was with his pretty purple hair, porcelain skin and the vibrant purple eyes that were primarily focused on him. His face had a small band-aid, as well as his fingers. It looked as if there were under his sleeves too. He looked so innocent, nothing like the Ouma he could remember. They stood in silence.
"Well...? Do you still love me as you said, or are you thinking the same as everybody around me?" he said quietly. His voice was like that of a child that did something wrong and felt guilty. I smiled at him. Shuichi smiled at him and did what he wanted to do.
He kissed him, cupping Ouma's face in his hands.
Ouma was surprised, but melted into the kiss quickly. When they both pulled away, they stared in each other's eyes. Ouma beamed, leaning into Shuichi's hand.
"Why were you so worried I wouldn't accept you?" Ouma's expression saddened, as he leaned away from the touch and hugged Shuichi.
"Some school kids started to gang up on me. They were homophobic. They left notes with insults, beat me up, once they even left a white flower on my desk. They're the reason for these band-aids. And others, they didn't even stare in my direction, even when I was beaten mercilessly. Once one told me why they didn't help me. They said I was a shithead and deserve a beating for being annoying. I thought you might be the same." Ouma said as his grip around Saihara tightened.
Saihara rubbed comforting circles in Ouma's back. "Well don't worry, I'll make sure nobody ever hurts you again". Ouma smiled looking up at Shuichi. Saihara smiled back.
They stood there for a while in silence.
----------------------------------------------------------------
"Aww! You guys look adorable together" Kaede squeaked, as Ouma grabbed Saihara's arm tightly smiling. "Well, would you look at that! Pooichi has a date! Congratulations asshole!" Iruma said, in her casual vulgar fashion. Rantaro smiled "Glad you two are happy! You make a good couple." he said calmly. "I knew my sidekick could do it!" Kaito said as Maki rolled her at the mark 'sidekick'. I was happy. Ouma and I were together and the feeling of emptiness that had always been in my chest has finally been filled.
And it was only because it was I completed Ouma.
And he completed me.
