Chapter One : Journey Unfolds
Maria Adarna Rama, bestowed with a name symbolizing purity, kindness, and success, emerged from a humble Visayan tribe that burgeoned into a grand kingdom. Born into poverty, our family yearned for recognition amidst the indifferent higher society. On my 15th birthday, a dangerous yet coveted opportunity presented itself.
In the scorching heat of the sun, sweat poured down my body, a never-ending cascade. The farmlands stretched before me as I toiled alongside my kin, laboring under the watchful eyes of our tribe leader. A desire burned within me, a longing to break free from the oppressive routine and explore the vast unknowns that lay beyond.
"I yearn for more than this endless toil. My heart craves adventure, to traverse the deepest seas and discover the mysteries the world conceals," I lamented, my words a melody of discontent amidst the relentless work, drawing mocking laughter from my male cousins.
"Adarna, your name doesn't echo the mystical bird's call for nothing. Hahaha," they teased, dismissing my dreams.
Defiantly, I retorted, "I could do more than you think. Mock me again, and I might just whip you into shape!"
Laughter became our refuge, a momentary escape from the harsh reality of undervalued labor. Little did we know that fate held a surprising twist, ready to alter the course of our lives.
One day, the unexpected unfolded. A royal messenger arrived, bringing news that would turn my world upside down.
"Why her? With so many people passing through the palace gates, are there not princesses more suited for this role?" my mother questioned, puzzled by the messenger's revelation.
"Datu Araw observed her virtue and talents. Your daughter stands out as the best choice, surpassing even the princesses. She is destined for greatness," the messenger explained.
Assuring my worried mother, I nodded, "Don't worry, Ma. I know what to do."
As I journeyed to the Datu's palace, uncertainties swirled in my mind. What did the Datu want from me? How had he singled me out? The answers eluded me as I pondered the unexpected turn my life had taken.
"Can you shed light on the Datu's intentions? Is this about marrying one of his sons?" I inquired, sensing a cryptic air around the mission.
"Don't overestimate yourself. The Datu has different plans for you," the messenger replied, quickening his pace.
Upon reaching the majestic palace, I greeted the Datu with respect, bowing and kissing the back of his hand. In the grand hall adorned with intricate wood carvings, colorful linen curtains, and a luxurious abaka carpet underfoot, the Datu revealed the purpose behind summoning me.
"You are chosen for an important mission. Become the princess envoy, sailing to the Liang Kingdom of China for negotiations. Our tribe's prosperity hinges on securing trade routes. Convince the emperor to open the borders, and you shall return victorious," the Datu declared.
Confused, I pondered the sense in this unexpected appointment.
"Kamahalan, while I look forward to this mission, I have conditions in exchange. Grant my kin ownership of our land, and take only half the tax. This will allow me to focus on the mission without worrying about my family," I requested, bowing once more.
The Datu, seemingly pleased, agreed to my terms without hesitation. And so, the scene shifted as I embarked on a journey towards the distant kingdom.
The voyage ahead promised challenges and mysteries waiting to unfold. Little did I know that this mission would not only reshape my destiny but also unveil the extraordinary adventures that awaited me beyond the familiar horizons of the farmlands.
A few weeks later.....
The captain of the guards warned, "Things won't be easy here. I'll return on the twelfth moon. Stay safe to return home."
Such words fueled my determination. As Princess Amaya, adorned with gold, title, and freedom, I pledged to fulfill my mission and bring victory to my kingdom.
Yet, here I stood, bowing before the Emperor of China in the Tang Dynasty.
"How was the journey?" inquired a handsome and dignified General, picking me up in a grand entourage.
"You know my language? I'm honored," I replied suspiciously.
"As a General, I know much. Do you understand ours?" he retorted sarcastically.
"Yes, a little. My brothers taught me. I never thought it would help until now," I smiled.
"No wonder you were chosen," he remarked, his demeanor cold.
"I come bearing gifts. Is this enough to feel welcome in this land?" I asked.
He smirked and scoffed, the journey continuing through stone-walled cities and majestic landscapes. I marveled at their structures, clad in a cloak graciously provided by the general, unraveling the mysteries of this unfamiliar realm. Experiencing exclusion and strange customs, I carried the weight of my mission, determined to overcome the challenges that lay ahead.
In the midst of our perilous journey, laughter became a distant memory.
"Go, go, go! Protect the princess!"
The once serene carriage transformed into chaos, echoing with the clash of swords and urgent shouts, tearing me from my peaceful nap.
"Your Highness, we're under attack by bandits. Don't come out," a hurried knock on the carriage floor left me weak-kneed.
"Under attack! Bandits? How can this be?!"
A wave of panic gripped me. I, who had never witnessed the brutality of combat, found myself facing a perilous reality. Peering through the carriage window, the golden-armored defenders clashed fiercely with the assailants in the dawn's light. The general, my steadfast escort, fought with a ferocity that left a canvas of blood, unconscious bodies, and conscious warriors on the ground. I couldn't bear to witness the brutality.
I closed the window, took a deep breath, and shut my eyes, grasping at the threads of an impossible escape.
Then, with a jolt, the carriage door flung open, and a sharp arrow pierced my chest. The warmth of my life force spilled out, yet I dared not glance at the wound. Trembling in fear and desperation, I yearned for someone amidst the chaos.
"General!" I cried out, my plea lost in the unfolding darkness as I succumbed to unconsciousness, my mission hanging by a fragile thread.
I woke up with something warm and heavy on covering my body. The smell of herbs calmed me down as pain throbs on my chest.
I awoke to find myself nestled in an opulent bed, draped in silk canopies adorned with intricately carved wooden accents. Ethereal curtains cascaded from the canopy, casting an enchanting aura. My surroundings were filled with an array of peculiar wooden furnishings—a mysterious allure exuding from each piece. A mystical round table, accompanied by chairs with an enigmatic charm, hosted a porcelain tea set that whispered of secrets untold. The room was a tapestry of silk and shadows, veiled in curtains, with porcelain treasures and vases adorning brown-glazed cabinets and drawers. Every piece of furniture whispered of ancient tales, etched in carvings and embellished with gold accents, creating an ambiance that stirred the heart with both mystery and romance.
For a moment there,I forgot how much in pain I am. The beautiful and ethereal looking room filled my body with adrenaline that makes me want to stand and run around the room to relax myself.
Not long before a knock came into the door.
“Princess Amaya, welcome to the Imperial Palace. How was your journey?”, General sternly said as he scans the room.
“Oh, General Liang, I'm touched by your concern. The journey was as delightful as a stroll through a field of thorns. And the accommodations – positively regal”,I replied sarcastically, still going through the scary event that happened to me added to the aching wound on my chest.
“I see. Your sarcasm is duly noted. How do you feel now?”, unmoved by her sarcasm, General Liang asked, cleared his throat and added to relieve awkwardness with his question,“What gifts did you bring?“.
“Well, General, I feel good despite of the fresh wound on my chest. And also,I've brought the rarest treasures - complaints about the journey, a collection of discomforts, and a splendid selection of my sarcastic remarks. I hope your emperor enjoys them”,I smirked, still can't believe how this man still unfazed with my sarcastic words.
“I assume you also brought something more tangible”,raising his brow,he retorted mainly amused by my words—or so I thought.
I laughed, mocking,“Oh, of course! Silly me. There's some gold, exquisite jewels, and a few trinkets to add a dash of glamour to your imperial collection”,and rolled my eyes.
“How generous of you, Princess. Your humility truly knows no bounds”.
“Well, General, it's a skill. One that comes in handy when dealing with stone-faced military types”,with a smirk only he can afford to have.
Ignoring the remark, General Liang stride to where I was standing and puts his left hand on my shoulder,“The emperor will see you shortly. I hope your diplomatic skills match your wit”.
I leaned in forward until our faces were inches apart and whispered seductively,“General, my wit is as sharp as your swords. Let's hope the emperor appreciates both”
“We shall see, Princess. Follow me”.
The cold general cleared his throat. I would assume that he's never been this close to a woman before and I can see the redness of his face from blushing which I do enjoy watching.
We continued our exchange with words wrapped in layers of diplomacy and dry humor,as we made our way through the palace corridors towards the awaiting audience with the emperor.
In the illustrious Tang Dynasty, the houses of royalty were architectural marvels, reflecting opulence and sophistication. These residences were characterized by grandeur, intricate design, and a harmonious blend of traditional Chinese elements.
The spatial arrangement of the houses followed the principles of feng shui, emphasizing harmony and balance. Rooms were organized around central courtyards, allowing for proper ventilation, natural light, and a sense of openness.
The grandeur extended to ceremonial halls, where important state affairs and gatherings took place. These halls featured high ceilings, majestic thrones, and symbolic imperial insignia, emphasizing the authority and prestige of the ruling elite.
Elaborate carvings, intricate latticework, and detailed murals adorned the exterior and interior of these royal homes. Wooden beams and columns showcased exquisite craftsmanship, often featuring motifs inspired by nature, mythology, and cultural symbols.
The interiors of Tang Dynasty royal residences were embellished with sumptuous materials. Silk curtains, ornate tapestries, and intricately woven carpets adorned the living spaces. Furniture crafted from rare woods, decorated with lacquer, and adorned with precious metals added to the overall grandeur.
It was a sight to behold for someone like me who was from a place so alike but very distant to this one. I was mesmerized by its beauty that it took me too long to gaze at the beautiful scenery.
And thus,we finally arrived at the court room where intimidating people stand before the great emperor of the Tang Dynasty.
