Chapter 1: Flashbacks
It’s the evening before my 20th birthday, I am not excited, nor do I want to celebrate. Its just another day to my family, I never got to have any parties or presents growing up. I tried to sleep but the storm that’s brewing outside is making it hard. Just as I doze off for what feels like the millionth time the thunder cracks and I’m transported back to a memory from my childhood. “Come out, come out wherever you are,” Jax called, “I only want to play with you Wren!” I stay hidden underneath my bed in hopes he will find his entertainment elsewhere. Another crack of thunder and I’m suddenly back to current times, still in my bed.
Jax is my older brother, he’s more than double my size considering he is 27. He’s tall, muscular and can easily overpower anyone who tries to fight him. He has always had a way with the ladies, his dark features are not lost on him. Black hair and chocolate brown eyes. Anytime he looks at me with his beady eyes I start to worry what his next move. Jax has always been the most manipulative of my siblings. We either got along or we didn’t, I have one other sibling. Jett who is 25 and is almost an exact carbon copy of Jax but instead of darker features he has a lighter brown hair and honey-colored eyes. That puts me as the youngest.
I’m so much smaller than my two brothers, barely coming in at 4 feet 10 inches tall. I’m no where near muscular nor am I very athletic in nature. Mother nature did not skip the feminine figure for me, growing up I was assumed to be far more promiscuous based on my figure alone. My hair I prefer to keep short to mid shoulder length and its dark brown with red hints here and there. I’m the only one of my siblings to have grey eyes, if were being honest I look nothing like those in my family.
Another crack of thunder rolls about outside and I still cannot get to sleep. Rolling onto my left side I close my eyes with a heavy sigh. This is going to be a long night I really should try to get some sleep. Unlike my brother’s life hasn’t exactly been easy for me. My parents frequently remind me they did not want a daughter, and often turned a blind eye to the abuse my brothers put me through. Growing up I had hoped for a miracle but as the years passed that hope had slowly faded into a sliver. Now I can almost guarantee it resembles a splinter.
Often, I would be subject to beatings while waiting on the bus because my brothers felt like it or some other reason they would search for a beating after school. School was my safe place no one could touch me, and I could shrink into the sea of people. I could just exist. I was not excited to graduate so I quickly looked for a part time job as I was not interested in attending college. There’s nothing wrong with going to college but I did not want to further my education. I ended up finding a part time waitressing job at a small diner on the pack lands. The sound of the heavy rain has almost lulled me to sleep entirely before another crash of thunder jolts me awake.
I normally don’t mind the storms when they roll through but tonight, I’ve been on edge. I can’t get comfortable in my own bed and it’s bothering me. Sometime later I found myself drifting off to sleep to the sound of the rain, I don’t know what time it was, but the lighting and thunder eventually subsided and I was able to fall asleep and drift back to the dream I was having. Although it was more of a flashback of when I was younger.
“Wren, I just wanna play!" Jax yelled. I'm back hiding under my bed. “Oh, come one Wren this isn’t fair!” I’m not particularly fond of playing with my brothers. They tend to get way to rough to fast, and I’ve turned into their punching bag as we got older. Today was no different Jax and Jett had both gotten into trouble in school today and neither of them were being honest with our parents about it. They blamed the other kids, the teachers and everyone else including me. When Jax came up yelling that he wanted to play I instantly hid under my bed. I was not willing to take the beating that I knew would follow.
Jax stops just short of my door..
Beep! Beep! BEEP!
