Chapter 2

1452 Words
I wake up around seven thirty and stretch my arms out wide. I yawn and slowly rise out of bed, walking groggily to my clothes, and hit my foot against one of my bins. I trip right over it and halfway fall into it as the edges cut up my arms. The noise must have woken up Colton because he's now sitting up in bed, rubbing his eyes, and yawning. He looks at me sprawled out in the bin. "s**t, man. You good?" Colton asks and works hard to refrain a smile. "Been worse," I mumble as I slowly push myself up and out of the bin. I grab a red Nike t-shirt and some white shorts from my dresser and place them on my bed. I pull off my shirt and pull on the Nike one. I finish getting dressed and walk towards the door. "You heading out?" Colton asks. "Yeah. Need to stop by the bathroom and then eat before I go to class," I reply as I turn back towards him. "Give me a minute." "What?" "I'll come with you, give me a minute to change." I sigh. "Hurry up then." Colton runs his fingers through his bed hair and grabs a comb. He quickly brushes his blond hair back and pulls on some new clothes. Seeing that he was almost ready, I grab my toothbrush and open our door to step out. He follows me a few seconds later. Once in the bathroom, I head over to the sinks. Colton does the same but apparently recognizes a few of the guys in here. "Hey, Colton. Ready for the big game tomorrow?" a guy with red hair and a freckled face asks. "Been ready since last season, Wesley! Can't wait to crush those rich little snobs," Colton replies and slaps the kid's back. They continue conversing and laughing while I finish brushing my teeth. "Who's the guy you walked in with?" Wesley asks Colton. "Oh, he's my roommate, Jace. A transfer," Colton tells him. I pick up my head and give him a nod. Wesley does the same. I turn to walk out of the bathroom when I hear, "Shit." Colton quickly rushes over to the sink and brushes his teeth. I wait for him to finish, deciding not to be rude and leave him. When he's done, we both exit and head down the hall. "The dining hall is right across from our dorm if you wanna eat there," Colton says. "Alright," I say as the door I'm walking by flies open. Sydney and her roommate walk out and almost slam into me and Colton. They giggle. "Hey Jace," Sydney says and smiles. Colton glances over at me and raises his eyebrows as he smirks. "It's not what you're thinking," I mutter to him. Then I say,"Hey Sydney." "Where are you guys headed?" she asks. "On our way to get some breakfast. You girls want to join us?" Colton cuts in. I roll my eyes. "Of course we would," Sydney says and nudges her blonde roommate. "I'm Sydney and this is Faye." "I'm Colt-" "We know, you're Colton; captain of the soccer team," Faye blurts. The girls start laughing. "Captain?" I say. Colton looks down and mutters, "Yeah." I look at him and notice a smile creeping onto his face. "Acting shy? Captain's a big deal, you know," I say and shove him. "Guess so," he says and laughs. "Well, let's go eat!" The four of us make our way to the dining hall across from our dorm. We each go through the buffet line and take a seat at one of the open tables. Sydney slides in beside me and Faye sits across from her and next to Colton. I don't have to talk much because Sydney just keeps up the conversation for me. She just talks as much as she pleases and I find myself losing interest a few times. I glance across at Faye and Colton to see neither one really conversing. Colton seems like he can't be bothered with Faye. The only reason why I was keeping my distance with Sydney was because of my loyalty to my girlfriend, who made me wonder if she was even doing the same. Sydney was a cute and bubbly girl after all, however, I couldn't lead her on and eventually crush her hopes. Colton on the other hand, didn't mention anything about having a girlfriend so it made me wonder why he seemed disinterested in Faye. I look down at my phone and realize I have five minutes until my class starts. It's pretty far from where we are so I stand up and say, "Didn't realize I've got class so soon. See you all later." I clear my plates and start walking to my class. Colton jogs up behind me. "You know, Sydney's a nice girl. She's never really dated anyone before and everyone says how sweet she is. Too bad you've already got a girl," he says. "Mhm. But you haven't said anything about having a girl yourself, yet you seem completely uninterested in Faye," I point out. "s**t, was I that obvious?" he asks and brings a hand to his forehead. "Not sure if she noticed but I'd say it was pretty obvious. Is she not your type?" I ask. "That's not it. Get to class," he says and turns away. I shrug my shoulders because of the abrupt leave and continue to class. I slowly approach the lecture hall I'm supposed to be in for Bio Molecular Science and groan. It was too early in the morning to have to sit through an hour and a half lecture with about seventy other people. I walk in and pick a seat somewhere in the middle of the room. I unpack my backpack and pull out my laptop to take notes. A few minutes later, a guy slides into the seat next to me. "Hey," he whispers. I turn to look at him. He has dark brown hair that's shaved on the sides and light brown eyes. "What's up," I say. "This class sucks. A buddy of mine on the soccer team took it last year and he said the professor is boring as hell. No labs, just pop quizzes on the reading every night," he explains. "Great," I mutter and roll my eyes. "Least he can help you out." "Not sure how much he could help, he barely passed the class," the guy says and laughs. "Though it would be worth the shot. I'll call Colton tonight." "Colton?" "Yeah, my buddy who took this last year." "Ah, I know him actually. My roommate." "Oh s**t. Really? Well, I'm Dustin, on the soccer team as well." "Jace." Dustin sits back as the professor begins to speak. I don't really listen to what he's even saying, just blankly typing down the notes displayed on the projected screen. Dustin's right, it is boring as hell. I can't seem to concentrate. The hour and a half passes so slowly that I feel I've been there much longer. We're dismissed and I stand up to walk towards the door. Dustin catches up to me. "Has Colton told you about the big game?" Dustin asks. "Can't say he has. Only heard him talking to a kid named Wesley about it in the bathroom," I reply. "Dude, you gotta come. It's like one of the biggest events on campus. Everyone is going," he says as we walk out together. "Eh, I'm not big into these sort of things," I say. "These sort of things? Jace, we've only beat those rich snobs one time, and that was last year. Surely they're going to come out hungry as ever and we gotta defend our pride, you know. Just come," he pressures. "Jeez, alright. I'll think about it," I say. "No need to think, you're coming," Dustin says and flashes a wide smile. I notice his silver earring as it sparkles in the sun. "Haha, fine," I laugh. "See you around." Dustin waves as he walks away and I head back to my dorm. When I get inside, Colton is laying in his bed. "I'm going to the game tomorrow," I say and plop on my bed. "Really? Sweet, it's like the biggest event-" Colton starts. "On campus, everyone is going. I know," I cut him off. "How do you know?" "A buddy of yours on the team, Dustin told me." "Dustin?" "Yeah, he's in my BMS class. Said he's gonna call you tonight about it." I turn to look at Colton who now has his hand covering half of his face and I can see the tips of his ears are red. "Crap."
