Chapter 1
"Hey, Jace. You all moved in yet?" I hear a high pitched voice say through the phone and immediately regret answering the call from my girlfriend.
"Yeah, Ava. Just about," I reply and pack away the last bin that is in my room.
"I already miss you," Ava tells me with a voice that failed to prove the words she spoke.
"Mhm," I grunt as I sigh. We just met up this morning to say our goodbyes before I moved into college, so I wasn't terribly sentimental at the moment.
Ava has short brown hair that's always curled and light brown eyes. She was a cheerleader. I should have been grateful to get such a catch, but I just couldn't feel that way. It wasn't anything that Ava did that particularly turned me away, I just never really felt there was anything special between us. And I knew she didn't either. We were both pushing ourselves through a relationship with minimal effort and even less emotion. It baffled me why we both exhausted ourselves for something almost meaningless to the both of us.
So now, I'm sort of stuck in a long-distance relationship. And anyone looking at us could tell that I was completely out of her league. The only trait that I'm grateful for is my height, which is, unfortunately, a very sad statement if I had to admit. I'm 6 feet and have a relatively strong build. My dark black hair is always swept across my forehead and my light grey eyes have been said to have storms swirling in them at times. A few tattoos snake down my arms and around my chest and a notable piercing lies on my eyebrow.
If you haven't noticed, Ava and I are complete opposites. I couldn't imagine the both of us maintaining this long-distance relationship.
Anyway, it's now my second year of college, though I transferred from the community college I was in last year. So, I'd be the sort of 'new kid' around here, but I doubt anyone would really notice with the large number of students who attend the university anyways. And even if someone did notice, I wouldn't particularly care. There were things that I just didn't give a damn about- like people for instance.
Call me cocky or whatever, I don't f*****g care.
I finish packing away all of my clothes in the dorm and take a look around the place. It was pretty empty as I didn't bring any special decorations or anything, so the walls were bare. There were two beds on each side of the room, one empty and one taken by myself, and one desk at each end of each bed. There were also two dressers, which I was glad for.
Despite the fact that I had finished unpacking alone, my roommate was still yet to show up. Not that I'm complaining, I'd rather the room to myself.
It honestly just sucks that I spoke too soon.
The second I sit down on my bed, the door to my dorm is flung open and banged hard against the wall. In comes a guy, or so I'm assuming, as I can't even see his face, holding boxes upon boxes of his belongings. They look as if they'll topple over any second.
He quickly rushes into the room and dumps everything onto the floor with a loud sigh while I just stare at him. He has dark blond hair that's combed back a little and dark brown eyes. He stands around my height, though judging by his muscular arms and legs and sports equipment, I assume he's here for a scholarship of some sorts.
He's breathing heavily and looks around. Noticing that one of the beds is taken, he takes a seat on the other.
"You gonna move your stuff?" I ask and point at his mess, forgetting about simple introductions.
"Dude, I just carried like two hundred pounds of crap up four flights of stairs. I'm beat, give me a few minutes," he says.
"If it's all crap, why'd you even bother to bring it?" I mutter and collapse on my bed.
"Huh?" he asks.
"Nothing."
He lays down for a few minutes and neither of us talk. He must have felt the awkwardness because he's the first to speak again.
"You're Jace, right? I'm not your stalker or anything, just checked online," he says.
"Hmm. Yeah, that'd be me. Who're you? I didn't look online," I reply. I'm not sure why I didn't check who my roommate would be but I guess it just never crossed my mind.
"Colton. Haven't seen you around before," he says and runs his fingers through his blond hair.
"Transferred here."
"Ah, that explains it."
"Mhm. Though, it's been a few minutes."
"Oh right," Colton says and gets off of his bed. He walks over to his pile of junk and starts unloading it. He pulls out some neon yellow cleats, a blue uniform top with the number 8 on the back, and white uniform shorts. He sets them aside and transfers some of his clothes into one of the dressers.
Colton finishes unpacking and takes a look around the room once again. It looks the same as before.
"Our room sucks," he says and laughs. Neither of us bothered to bring anything to decorate. Colton brought a few family pictures to put on his desk but that was it. And me? I didn't bring any.
"Pretty much," I say.
"Oh, you probably already know by looking at my stuff, but, I'm on the soccer team. With practice, games, and all, I probably won't be around much," Colton says to me and wiggles his eyebrows. "Guess that leaves you with more time to fool around with some girls in here."
I sighed. "I've got a girlfriend."
"Really? Which dorm is she staying in?"
"She's not from here. She's at some college in Florida."
"What? That's gotta be tough. I mean, New Jersey's pretty damn far from Florida."
"No shit."
Colton sits back on his bed and we talk for a while about random crap, just getting to know each other.
By now, it's getting close to night and I'm feeling exhausted. Classes start early tomorrow morning so I decide to head over to the showers.
As I step out of my room, I look up and find a girl staring at me from outside her dorm. She's short, with long dark hair that cascades down her arms and bright blue eyes. She quickly flashes me a smile and looks down.
I just nod my head at her and start walking down the hall.
"Hey! Wait up!"
I turn around to see the girl running towards me. When she's in front of me, she tucks a few loose strands of hair behind her ear. She shyly picks up her head and wills her eyes to look at mine. I raise my eyebrows.
"I'm Sydney," she says. "My room's across from yours. Nice to meet you, what's your name?"
I was a bit taken aback by her forwardness. I mean, all I wanted to do was take a shower, not get caught in a conversation.
"Jace," I reply. "But I've gotta go shower." I point down the hall.
"Oh, okay. Just figured I'd introduce myself since we're probably going to be seeing a lot of each other," Sydney says and smiles.
"We will?" I accidentally say out loud. "I mean-"
"Of course. There's always frequent parties going on around here," Sydney cuts me off.
"Oh, not interested. See you around campus," I say and give a small wave. I walk away and leave Sydney to go back to her room. I am too exhausted to deal with anyone, though I hope I wasn't too abrasive.
Oh well. I finally make it to the bathroom where I step into one of the showers. The hot water hits my body as steam flows around and I throw my head back to scrub my hair. I head back to my room to rest before classes begin tomorrow.
