"Hm?" I ask.
"Nothing," Colton mutters and removes his hand. "Why's Dustin gonna call me?"
"He said you took BMS last year and it sucked. Supposedly you're going to help us out," I explain.
"Both of you?"
"Uh, yeah. Is that a problem?"
"No, I mean, I almost failed. I won't be much of a help."
"I don't really care if you help or not. But Dustin needs it."
"Okay."
And with that, I turn away and get ready for my next class. Colton stirs around behind me, gathering his supplies.
"Hey, you've got class soon?" he asks.
"Some math class," I groan.
"Ah, same. Let's go together."
I decide it's alright to go with him, though I'd rather go alone. I prefer being independent than walking with anyone but something told me Colton wouldn't care.
We walk silently for the most part until we reach our class. There's still around five minutes until it starts and Dustin comes sauntering in followed by Sydney.
Dustin catches my eye and walks to where Colton and I are sitting. He smiles and says, "What's up, Jace?"
"Not much. Another sucky class, eh?" I say.
"Oh," is all he says and takes a seat next to me.
"Oh?" I ask. Colton shifts on my other side and turns his head away.
Sydney comes over shortly after and sits in front of us. She turns around and beams at us.
"Hey guys! We've all got the same class!" she exclaims. Well yeah, anyone could see that.
"Guess so," I shrug. "You going to the soccer game tomorrow?"
"Oh, yeah! Of course. Faye and I are going. Hey, Colton and Dustin, you're both playing tomorrow," she smiles. "Good luck! Jace, you wanna come with us?"
"Sure," I say and Colton nudges me. For whatever reason, he thinks Sydney has a 'thing' for me. I mean, she probably does, but the feelings aren't mutual. Least not yet. s**t. Ava.
"We'll meet you outside your room around five, sound good? The game starts at six so we will get good seats on the bleachers," Sydney says as class starts.
"Alright," I say. Though, I can't seem to get over this awkward feeling in the air. Dustin and Colton haven't spoken a word to each other since Dustin got here. And yesterday, Dustin called Colton his 'buddy'. I mean, they're on the same damn soccer team but won't acknowledge each other. I decide not to think much about it since I should probably be paying attention to what is being taught.
I zone out for a while until I hear the professor say, "That concludes today's lesson. Make sure you review your notes for the quiz tomorrow."
Quiz?
I'm in deep s**t. Didn't listen to the lesson. I curse and put my head down on the desk.
"Jace, you gotta help me. I can't fail this quiz," Colton whispers to me.
"What makes you think I paid one ounce of attention?" I say and pick up my head.
"Fuck."
"Jeez, you two. Seriously. You gotta pay attention if you wanna pass, but I'll help you guys out this time," Dustin says and rolls his eyes.
"Uh, mind if I join?" Sydney turns around and shyly asks.
"You're all hopeless," Dustin says and stands up. "Let's meet up at the library tonight around six."
We all agree that the plan sounds good and head back to our dorms. Dustin takes his leave as his dorm is in the other direction.
"You're so stupid," Colton says to me. "Not listening in class."
"Oh, I'm the stupid one. Yeah, because you listened so well and for some reason which I cannot fathom, you need another session?" I point out.
"Shut up."
"And what's going on with you and Dustin? You're teammates yet you act like you're strangers," I say. "Didn't even speak to each other."
"Huh? We're normal. Nothing's going on," Colton blurts.
"Okay then."
We reach the dorm and say goodbye to Sydney as she enters her room across the hall. I dump my supplies on my desk and head over to my bed. We've got a few hours until Dustin's tutoring session so I decide to crash for a bit.
"Wake me up when we gotta go," I tell Colton.
"Maybe," he replies.
"My god."
---
I wake up suddenly and press the home screen on my phone to check the time which reads 6:15. That means Colton left and didn't wake me up.
I jump out of bed and rush over to the library, still exhausted. I find Dustin and Colton sitting at a small, round table and trudge over. Colton quickly moves his hand off the table, away from Dustin.
"Ah, nice of you to come along to my amazing tutoring session," Dustin says and grins.
"This asshole neglected to wake me up," I say and push Colton's arm. "Where's Sydney?"
"She just ran to the bathroom," Dustin says.
"Have you guys started?"
"Somewhat."
Sydney comes bouncing over and says, "Jace, you made it." She giggles and pulls my arm down to sit next to her. "I'll catch you up."
She starts explaining the steps I missed while Dustin and Colton stay quiet. Once I reach the point they left off on, Dustin picks up and explains the rest. He is pretty helpful, makes sure everyone is grasping the material, and goes around to each one of us if we don't understand. It was a good thing I got up to come and I'm grateful for it.
We continue on for a while until my cellphone starts vibrating in my pocket. I pull it out and read the contact name that appears. Ava.
"s**t, I gotta take this. Don't know how long I'll be so you guys can continue without me. Thanks for the help, Dustin," I say and walk out of the library.
I answer the call.
"Hey."
"Hey, Jace. How's your first day of classes going?" Ava asks with her perky voice.
"Not bad," I say, excluding the fact that I basically didn't pay attention in any class.
"That's all? My classes were great, got to meet a lot of new people and some really nice girls. How about you?"
I realize that she's essentially asking me if I met any girls so I say, "Haven't met many. Just a few guys." I decide not to tell her about Sydney since Ava would just get paranoid.
"Well, I hope to see you soon. I miss you."
"Yeah."
"I love you, Jace." She doesn't.
"You too."
