Chapter one
It was a cold winter night, when Ava Wellinger shakes the snow from her hood, in the hall of her parental home. She breaths in through her nose, and smells her moms signature dish coming from the kitchen. As she walks up the stairs, she thinks back to today, and signs.
Where did it go wrong?
Earlier that day, as she walked into her classroom, she immediately noticed it. As she stopped at her desk, she stared down at the papers on her mahogany desk, completely flabbergasted.
Her best friend, almost sister, Kelly Beck, sat across from her with the same expression. Ava was tempted to turn around and go home, maybe that would still make her day good, instead of looking at the piece of paper and the terrible words, mocking her from the white sheet.
When she looked up at Kelly, she could tell her best friend was fighting a grin.
‘This is a joke, right?’ She asked.
Kelly shook her head. ‘Nope, freshly pressed!”
‘And you’re coming.’
No. There was simply no way! Last year was a disaster already, and she refused to do it again.
‘Ah, c’mon Av, ‘ Kelly stood up in one swift move and pressed herself against my arm, yanking it, like it would convince me faster. ’We should go together then!’ As Kelly starting her waterfall of pleases, my mind went back to last year.
The night before the summer ball, Kelly and me were getting ready in my room. She curled my hair and adviced me about some make-up, eventually putting it on me aswell. We were really excited, as both of the guys we were into were coming to the ball. Only difference, Ben actually asked Kelly as his date, and Nick was actually going with Amanda, the cheerleader captain.
Kelly was the complete opposite of me, average length, athletic figure, long blonde hair and the perfect face. Every teenage guys dream, and they made no secret of it. Kelly often found notes in her locker, got a lot of chocolates on valentines day, and was the main reason for the high density of male visitors during the cheerleading practice. And then there’s me, awkwardly tall and skinny, my strawberry blonde hair was a mixture of straight and wavy, and I had absolutely no clue about fashion or whatsoever. Ofcourse, Kelly gave all of her valentine chocolates to me.
And that night was the exact night why I did not want to go this year. Yet here we are, staring at the flyer invite on my desk.
I snapped back to reality, still having an hysterical blonde yanking on my arm.
‘Please please please please pl-.’
‘Fine! Fine! But under one condition!’
“What is it? Anything!’ And I knew, that she would agree with anything, as long as we went.
“No boys”
