Episode 1
SOPHIA'S POV The first time I saw Ethan Blackwood, I thought he was a monster. The second time, I realized he was beautiful. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let me start at the beginning—the morning my life split into "before" and "after," the morning I learned that the worst thing that could ever happen to me would also turn out to be the best. --- My name is Sophia Martinez, and I was nobody. Until the announcement. --- The morning started like any other Monday at Westbrook High, with the September air carrying the smell of fallen leaves and the distant sound of the marching band practicing on the football field. I was sitting in my Advanced Placement Chemistry class, my color-coded notes spread across my desk in perfect order, when Principal Davidson's voice crackled through the intercom system. "Good morning, students and faculty. I have a very special announcement." I barely looked up from my notes. Principal Davidson made special announcements at least twice a week, and they were usually about cafeteria menu changes or upcoming pep rallies. But something in his voice sounded different today. More serious. More important. "I am pleased to announce that Westbrook High and Eastgate High have been selected to participate in the prestigious Hamilton Scholarship Competition." My head snapped up. The Hamilton Scholarship was legendary. It offered full tuition to any university in the country, plus a housing stipend and a monthly allowance. It was the kind of scholarship that could change a person's entire life. The kind of scholarship that could get me out of this small town and into the future I had been dreaming about since I was a little girl. "For the first time in the history of this competition," Principal Davidson continued, "students from both schools will be required to work together in pairs. One student from Westbrook and one student from Eastgate will be matched based on academic strengths and compatibility." The classroom erupted into whispers. Working with Eastgate students? That was impossible. Westbrook and Eastgate had been rivals for generations. Our football teams hated each other. Our debate clubs competed fiercely. Our students didn't even look at each other in public. And now we were supposed to work together? "The selected students will be announced at the end of the week. Thank you for your attention” The intercom clicked off,and immediately, everyone started talking at once. I sat frozen, my heart pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears. This was my chance. My only chance. My parents worked three jobs between them and still couldn't afford to send me to community college. The Hamilton Scholarship was the difference between a future and nothing at all. This was my opportunity to prove myself, to earn the scholarship that could take me anywhere. But working with an Eastgate student? The thought made my stomach turn. "Sophia, can you believe this?" My best friend Emma turned around in her seat, her eyes wide with excitement. "You're definitely going to be selected. You're the smartest person in this school." I shook my head. "I don't know about that. There are a lot of smart people here." "But you're the smartest," Emma insisted. "And you need this scholarship more than anyone." She wasn't wrong about that. My parents couldn't afford to send me to a good university without help. The Hamilton Scholarship was my only chance at the future I wanted. But the thought of working with an Eastgate student made me nervous.I had never even spoken to an Eastgate student. I had spent my whole life avoiding them, crossing to the other side of the street when I saw their navy blue uniforms, keeping my head down and my mouth shut. And now I was supposed to work with one? What if they ruined everything? I spent the rest of the day distracted, my mind spinning with possibilities and fears. By the time the final bell rang, I had convinced myself that I probably wouldn't be selected anyway. There were plenty of other students who were just as qualified as I was. --- The letter arrived days later. But when I got home that evening, my mother was waiting for me at the kitchen table with a letter in her hand. "Sophia, this came for you today." I took the letter from her, my hands trembling. The envelope had the Westbrook High logo on it, and my name was printed in neat letters across the front. I tore it open and read the words inside. Dear Sophia Martinez, We are pleased to inform you that you have been selected to represent Westbrook High in the Hamilton Scholarship Competition. Your partner from Eastgate High will be Ethan Blackwood. Please report to the public library's private conference room tomorrow at 4:00 PM for your first meeting. I stared at the letter, my heart sinking. Ethan Blackwood. I had heard that name before. Everyone at Westbrook had heard that name before. He was the top student at Eastgate, the golden boy, the one everyone talked about when they talked about the competition. He was also, according to rumors, arrogant, cocky, and impossible to work with. The kind of person who’d destroy someone like me. "Sophia?" My mother's voice was gentle. "What is it?" I forced a smile, even though my insides were twisting with fear. "Nothing, Mamá. It's good news. I got selected." Her face lit up. "That's wonderful! Oh, I'm so proud of you!" She pulled me into a hug, and I let myself be held, even as the dread coiled tighter in my chest. I was going to have to work with Ethan Blackwood. And I was terrified. This was going to be a disaster. --- The next day, I arrived at the public library fifteen minutes early. I wanted to be prepared, to make a good impression. I had spent the entire night researching the competition and organizing my notes. I had barely slept, my mind racing with possibilities and fears. I was ready for anything. Except for Ethan Blackwood. I was sitting in the private conference room, my notes spread out in front of me, when the door opened. And there he was. Ethan Blackwood. He walked into the conference room at exactly 4:00 PM, and the first thing I noticed was his eyes. They were green, a deep forest green that seemed to look right through me. The second thing I noticed was his smirk. It was the kind of smirk that said he knew exactly how good-looking he was and wasn't afraid to use it to his advantage. "You must be Sophia," he said, extending his hand. "I'm Ethan." I stared at his hand like it was a snake. "I don't shake hands with the enemy." Ethan laughed, a low, warm sound that made my stomach flip. "The enemy? We're not at war, Sophia. We're just from different schools." "Same thing," I said, crossing my arms. "Westbrook and Eastgate have been rivals for generations. Working together doesn't change that." Ethan dropped his hand and studied me with those green eyes. "You know, I heard you were difficult. I didn't believe it until now." "Difficult?" I felt my face flush with anger. "I'm not difficult. I'm focused. There's a difference." "Is there?" Ethan pulled out a chair and sat down, leaning back like he owned the place. "Because from where I'm standing, you seem pretty determined to hate me before you even know me." I wanted to argue, but he had a point. I was judging him based on rumors and school rivalries. That wasn't fair, even if it felt justified. "Fine," I said, sitting down across from him. "Let's just get this over with. We have a lot of work to do." Ethan nodded, but his smirk didn't fade. "Then I guess we'll have to find other ways to connect, partner." The way he said "partner" made my heart skip a beat. I ignored it and pulled out my notes. "Let's start with the practice exam from last year. I've already analyzed the questions and identified the key areas we need to focus on." Ethan raised an eyebrow. "You already analyzed the practice exam? The competition was just announced yesterday." "I like to be prepared." "I can see that." Ethan leaned forward, and for the first time, I noticed that his eyes weren't just green. They had flecks of gold in them, like sunlight filtering through leaves. "But maybe you should slow down a little. We have months to prepare." "Months isn't a lot of time," I said. "We need to start now if we want to win." "We?" Ethan smiled. "I thought you didn't want to work with me." I opened my mouth to respond, but nothing came out. He had me there. "Look," Ethan said, his voice softening. "I know you don't trust me. I know you think I'm just some arrogant Eastgate kid who doesn't take anything seriously. But I want to win this scholarship just as much as you do. My family... they need this. I need this." There was something in his voice, something vulnerable that caught me off guard. For a moment, the smirk was gone, and I saw someone else underneath. Someone who was scared and determined and maybe even a little bit lost. "I get it," I said quietly. "I need this too." Ethan nodded, and something passed between us. An understanding, maybe. Or the beginning of something else entirely. "Okay," he said, pulling out his own notebook. "Let's start with the practice exam. But I have a different approach than you might be used to." "What do you mean?" "I don't use color-coded notes." I gasped. "You don't use color-coded notes? How do you keep track of everything?" Ethan laughed, and this time it wasn't mocking. It was genuine, warm, and I found myself smiling despite myself. "I use mind maps," he said. "And mnemonic devices. And sometimes I just talk things out loud until they make sense." "That sounds chaotic." "It is chaotic. But it works for me." I shook my head. "This is never going to work. We're too different." "Maybe that's the point," Ethan said. "Maybe we're supposed to learn from each other." I didn't have an answer for that. So I just opened my notes and started reviewing the practice exam, and Ethan did the same with his chaotic mind maps and mnemonics. And somehow, despite everything, we started to work. --- Three hours later, we had made more progress than I expected. Ethan's unconventional methods were actually helping me see problems in new ways, and my structured approach was helping him organize his thoughts. "Not bad for a Westbrook girl," Ethan said, packing up his bag. "Not bad for an Eastgate boy," I shot back. We walked out of the library together, and the evening air was cool against my skin. The sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. "So," Ethan said, stopping at the corner. "Same time tomorrow?" I nodded. "Same time tomorrow." He smiled, and for a moment, I forgot that he was supposed to be my enemy. I forgot about Westbrook and Eastgate and the rivalry that had defined our schools for generations. I just saw Ethan, standing there in the fading light, looking at me like I was something worth looking at. "Goodnight, Sophia," he said softly. "Goodnight, Ethan." I turned and walked away, my heart pounding in my chest. I didn't look back, but I could feel his eyes on me, following me down the street until I disappeared around the corner. When I got home, I went straight to my room and closed the door. I leaned against it and took a deep breath, trying to calm my racing heart. What was that? I thought. What just happened? I didn't have an answer. But I knew one thing for sure: Ethan Blackwood was going to be a problem. Not because he was a bad partner, but because he was a good one. And the more time I spent with him, the harder it would be to remember that we were supposed to be enemies. I walked to my desk and opened my notebook, intending to review my notes from the session. But instead, I found myself writing something else entirely. Ethan has green eyes with gold flecks. He laughs with his whole body. He makes me feel things I don't want to feel. I stared at the words, my face burning with embarrassment. I tore the page out and crumpled it up, throwing it in the trash. But I couldn't throw away the feeling that had settled in my chest. The feeling that something had changed tonight. Something I couldn't take back. And as I lay in bed that night, staring at the ceiling, I realized with growing dread that I was actually looking forward to seeing Ethan again tomorrow.
