Epilogue “Tell me again why we got up at the ass-crack of dawn?” I mumbled as we stepped out of the car. Wes snorted. “The sun’s out.” Barely. He ignored my question, but it had been rhetorical. I let us in my parents’ front door so we could see them for an early brunch before catching our flight home to Austin. “In the kitchen,” Mom hollered, apparently hearing us come in. “Looks delicious,” Wes said as Mom pulled what appeared to be a spinach quiche out of the oven. “Thank you, sweetie.” My breath caught at Mom’s affectionate pet name, but Wes didn’t miss a beat as he poured a cup of coffee and brought it to the table. “You’re welcome, dearest.” He winked at her, and she tittered.
