Lucas POV:
I followed them both through the dingy corridor in the club when I saw the fire exit door. I was ready to open it when I heard her voice again.
“f**k you wolf” she said as I heard him struggle. The smell of blood filled my nose and his grunts continued. I pushed the door further to rushed outside. As the cold breeze hit my face I realised that the wolf was dead on the floor.
“What did you do?” I asked.
“He had it coming” she raised her blade towards me. “If you’re going to defend him the same thing will happen to you” she said as she cleaned her blade on his trousers.
“He didn’t know what the word No meant”.
“Well, what can you do? Death was the best things that could gave happened."
“Wait there”.
I left her in the side street and marched back into the club. Anger was seeping through every vain in my body. No Alpha should be surrounded by men like that, both of my hands were balled on either side of my body and were ready to meet his face. I moved passed his bodyguards and lifted the Alpha by his throat.
“WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOURE DOING?” the girl screamed behind me.
“YOU CALL YOURSELF AN ALPHA WHEN YOU CAN’T CONTROL YOUR OWN MEN” I squeezed his throat tighter.
“LILY WHY ARENT YOU DOING ANYTHING? HE CAN’T DIE ON YOUR WATCH !” one of the men shouted.
“He will harm him but he won’t die” she put her palm on my shoulder. “Will he?”
“No” I said quietly. With all the strength I had I threw him across the room. With my speed I approached him again. “Small tip Alpha. You need to surround yourself with people that represent you. Respect in order to be respected” his eyes were flickering between me and the girl.
He must have realised what happened when he smelled blood in the air.
“Lily, I’m sorry about Rob’s behaviour. You can take the rest of the night off. I’ll see you tomorrow”. With that she left.
I let go of the pathetic Alpha and followed her across the club and out onto the street.
“Lily wait” I shouted. “Lily please wait”. There was no stopping her. I picked up my pace and I ran in front of her. “Please wait”.
“Do you have any idea what you have just done? I had to stay with him, I had to make him believe that he needed me. No matter the situation I had to stay and he just told me to leave him alone and take the night off. A pathetic wolf told me what to do. Who told you to get involved?” she punched me in my chest and started to walk off again.
“I’m sorry okay? I hate to see you be disrespected…”
“WHY?!” she interrupted me. “ WHO THE HELL AM I TO YOU TO PROTECT ME?”
“It’s not about you. It’s about teaching that scum a lesson” hearing me call the Alpha scum made her smile. I didn’t understand her deep hatred for wolves but if it meant her being happy I would gladly do it, especially if it meant taking the piss out of that redhead.
“Lily please let me make it up to you”. I didn’t know why I said it I just needed to spend more time with her. My body and mind longed for her.
“You nearly destroyed my reputation and cost me my job! How can you make up for that?” whilst she was thrashing her arms around telling me off, calling me a jerk and every other curse word in the dictionary I noticed a small tattoo on the inside of her wrist.
“Let me walk you home” I suggested.
“This isn’t my home” she said abruptly.
“Well, you must live somewhere. Come on this is a bad neighbourhood”
“I can take good care of myself” she pointed to the alleyway where the pathetic excuse of a wolf was lying on the floor.
“Let me accompany you then. We can take the piss out of that Alpha”. I started walking in the direction which was facing.
“Fine” she agreed.
Lily POV:
I wasn’t intending on killing any wolves today but that prick had it coming to him. I only tell guys no once and his explanation and pleading was pitiful. I enjoyed piercing his heart, a hollow and dark heart which used to beat in his body. One less wolf on this earth to worry about.
This guy in front of me also didn’t understand the word “No”. But his excuses were a little bit more backed up, he was genuinely sorry for what he did. I saw the determination in his eyes and I knew that he wanted to kill Max, and now he was walking me back to the hotel. His strength and speed was impressive no wonder the Elders wanted him to work for them.
I never wanted to be seen weak and that is exactly what he made me look like. He was a human who worked for the Elders surely he knew how much we were pressured to be seen as having some kind of power.
“What do you do?” I asked.
“For the Elders? Umm I’m currently in training” he said hesitantly.
“Well soon you will learn about us” I said proudly. I wasn’t in the mood to talk yet for some reason I nearly told him about the Daughters.
“Us? There’s more of you?” he asked.
“Yeah, I guess you could call us assassins and hitmen… hitwomen actually. We work for the Elders and whatever they want they get. Protection or execution” I didn’t want to tell him anymore.
“So, your job was protection yet you still killed that wolf” he retold the events of the night.
I kept on walking and decided to take the shorter route to the hotel. I knew it since the Daughters always booked the same hotel. The streets were alive with Latin music and the various flavours filled my nose.
“Why did you choose to go this way?” he continued
“Shorter” I simply answered.
“I love this area. Follow me” he grabbed my hand and dragged me through some crowds and tight alleyways until we reached a crowd of people. He still didn’t let go of my hand. I didn’t know where I was anymore so in a way I didn’t want him to let me go.
“What the hell is this?” I shouted over the music blaring in the street.
“This is a dance and this is a dance party” he said as he grabbed my other hand and put it on his shoulder and cupped my right hand in his. I had no idea how to dance and I wasn’t intending on starting now.
As I turned around to walk off I felt my whole body spinning and I nearly face planted his chest. I felt both is his hands on my hips but instead of pulling me against him he started swaying them from side to side. I didn’t even know his name.
“I don’t know how to dance” I leaned in closer and I said loudly in his ear.
“Don’t worry” I felt his breath on neck. “I’ll teach you, just loosen up”.
He was right I was standing still from the moment he spun me around. As I looked down I saw his feet moving to the rhythm, I tried to copy his steps and slowly but surely I was feeling the rhythm in my body.
Couple of minutes later he spun me again and his hand travelled to my back, I forgot where I was and who I was with. In an instant my face lit up and I started laughing. The last time I laughed was when Poppy tired to fire my arrow and I landed only a meter away in the grass.
This man was a stranger yet me made me forget the events of the whole night, killing that wolf was satisfying but dancing to such live music made me heart skip a beat. I was happy and it was all because of him. The way he smiled when looking at me made me question my whole idea of New York, in such a weird and odd place this guy turned up and started dancing with me.
We were near the Hyatt when he finally spoke out.
“How long do you have to protect..”
“Maximilian” I finished his sentence for him.
“Right okay, how long do you have to protect Maximilian for?”
“For the next 4 days and then I’m going back to South Carolina”
As we continued walking down the street the suddenly stopped and ran across the street and started speaking to an old man who was selling something. I ignored how random he was and carried on walking. I wasn't obliged to wait for him.
“Hey, hold up” he called after me.
Please just leave, I’m so close to the hotel. I thought to myself, he was a nice guy but he was starting to get on my nerves. I turned around and saw him carrying one single flower, a lily.
“Don’t let it die” he said as he gave u tot me. “A lily for Lily”
“Ohh umm, thanks…”
“Lucas”.
“Thanks Lucas”.
“I’m guessing you’re staying at the Hyatt as it’s in sight and you seem a lot more relaxed. Sorry about tonight but I hope you’ve enjoyed the dance.” He leaned forwards and his lips met my cheek. I had no idea what happened to me, usually he would be on the floor or with a broken arm, yet he was walking away. I stood there without moving a muscle and try to figure out what just happened.
