CHAPTER 1: BOUND IN SHATTERED GLASS
Hot copper flooded my tongue as my teeth sheared through my bottom lip.
The impact tore the breath straight from my lungs, a crushing, kinetic blow that sent me careening sideways through the shadowy corridor. My shoulder blade splintered against the jagged edge of an obsidian pillar, sending sharp spikes of agony down my spine. The heavy crystal serving tray slipped from my numb fingers, dropping toward the flagstones in slow motion.
It struck the stone with a deafening crack, shattering into a million lethal diamonds that rained across the floor.
Ringing static chewed through my eardrums, deafening me to everything except the heavy, predatory breathing looming right behind my neck.
"Did you really think you could slip past the eastern perimeter without paying your toll, stray?"
A heavy, calloused hand clamped around my windpipe before I could regain my footing. Fingers sank deep into my tender flesh with bone-crushing pressure. I was yanked backward off the ground, my spine slamming hard against a wall of solid muscle and coarse wool as I was hoisted clear into the air.
Air vanished instantly. My combat boots kicked out wildly against the air and the polished marble wall, finding zero traction.
I clawed frantically at the massive wrist pinning me in place. My fingernails dug deep, scraping uselessly against taut skin and thick leather sleeves. My chest heaved in violent, agonizing spasms, fighting for micro-molecules of oxygen that refused to enter my constricted airway. Black spots bloomed aggressively behind my eyelids, threatening to swallow my consciousness whole.
I didn't need to turn my head to identify the monsters holding my life in their hands. The suffocating stench of cheap rye whiskey, stale sweat, and stagnant woodsmoke gave them away instantly.
Kyle and Kaleb. My stepbrothers in blood, though they treated me lower than the toxic mud beneath their combat boots ever since our parents' forced political union bound our fates inside this brutal packhouse.
"Going somewhere nice, little mutt?" Kyle sneered directly into my left ear, his hot, sour breath coating my damp skin like filth.
The suffocating pressure on my throat suddenly vanished as he opened his palm.
Gravity yanked me down without mercy. I crashed hard onto the cold stone floor, reflexively throwing my hands out to break the fall. My palms landed squarely amidst the jagged field of broken crystal glass.
A sharp, blinding agony lanced through my palms, thumbs, and forearms as microscopic shards embedded deep into my skin. The impact forced a choked, ragged scream from my raw throat, the sound bouncing violently off the high vaulted arches of the long corridor.
Kyle and Kaleb erupted into synchronized, harsh barking laughter.
My blood leaked rapidly from my shredded palms, pooling out into jagged crimson streaks across the pristine white marble. The bright red fluid created a stark, visual map of my entire miserable existence within the Obsidian Pack.
"Look at her crawl," Kaleb mocked, taking a heavy step forward. His dark combat boot slammed down squarely on the back of my right wrist, grinding down with deliberate, sadistic weight.
Bones groaned in protest beneath his heel, threatening to snap like dry twigs. I bit down on my already torn lip so hard that fresh metallic blood filled my mouth entirely. I ground my back teeth together until my jaw throbbed, refusing to give them the sweet satisfaction of hearing me cry out in agony.
"Please... just let me up," I gasped, the raspy words bubbling out through a thick haze of hot, humiliated tears that streaked through the dust on my cheeks.
"Let you up?" Kaleb’s voice dropped into a low, terrifying hum that reverberated through the soles of my feet.
He lunged downward, locking his thick fist into my long dark red hair. With a sudden, violent jerk, he wrenches my head backward. The force stretched my neck to its absolute, agonizing limit, forcing my face toward the vaulted ceiling. My scalp screamed in agony as individual hair roots tore free from my skull.
"We haven't even started your daily conditioning yet, b***h," Kaleb snarled, dragging my upper body forward across the glass-strewn floor like a piece of discarded luggage. "You think you can roam pack territory unpunished after what your bloodline did?"
Around us in the grand corridor, dozens of pack members drifted past on their morning duties. Some lingering near the archways, watching the spectacle with cold, indifferent eyes. Others turned their heads away entirely, whispering behind cupped hands as they picked up their pace.
Not a single soul raised a finger to intervene. Not a single voice offered a shred of defense or mercy. In the Obsidian Pack, weakness was treated like an infectious contagion, and empathy was a guaranteed death sentence. Compassion did not exist within these damp stone walls; survival belonged solely to the cruel and the relentless.
"How about a nice little sprint through the northern training grounds?" Kyle suggested, his pale eyes gleaming with malicious inspiration as he stepped alongside his brother. "Let's see how fast she moves with the hounds snapping at her bloody ankles."
My stomach plummeted into a dark, bottomless void. The training hounds weren't ordinary canine beasts; they were monstrous, genetically reinforced alpha hounds bred explicitly to tear living flesh from bone during war.
"A brilliant suggestion," Kaleb agreed, his fingers tightening like an iron vise in my hair as he hauled me up onto my feet by my scalp alone.
Waves of intense nausea rolled through my stomach. Every single step forward drove the glass fragments deeper into my wounded palms, sending searing bolts of nerve fire shooting straight up my forearms. I dragged my boots uselessly across the floorboards, my fingers trailing desperate, bloody smears along the cold stone walls in a futile, pathetic bid to anchor myself.
They hauled me down the long corridor toward the massive double iron doors that led out to the freezing, windswept courtyard. The biting draft leaking through the iron cracks smelled of frozen mud, wet fur, and approaching snow.
My entire body shook violently, shivering from the bitter cold and the crushing, suffocating weight of utter helplessness. My knees buckled beneath me twice, but each time, Kaleb merely yanked my hair harder, pulling me back to my feet with ruthless efficiency.
Yet, deep inside the center of my chest—buried beneath years of trauma, forced starvation, and constant physical abuse—something fundamental shifted.
It wasn't fear paralyzing my lungs anymore. It was an abrupt, electric heat.
A sudden pulse of raw, emerald energy flared to life directly behind my ribs. It thrummed with a violent, hypnotic cadence, completely foreign to my known anatomy yet violently alive. It felt like a subterranean beast waking up from a centuries-long slumber beneath the earth.
My sternum grew searing hot, burning so brightly it completely defied the bone-chilling draft blowing through the hallway. The emerald current raced outward through my circulatory system, flooding my veins and making my heart hammer a frantic, war-drum rhythm against my ribcage.
My vision, previously blurred by pain and tears, suddenly sharpened with frightening clarity. I could see every microscopic crack in the obsidian pillars, every individual grain of dust suspended in the freezing air.
Before my stepbrothers could haul me across the iron threshold into the courtyard, the massive oak doors of the grand hall exploded inward.
A deafening, thunderous crash rattled the ancient stone foundations of the entire fortress. Splintered oak wood rained down like a deadly storm across the flagstones, the acoustic shockwave momentarily wiping out the ringing static in my ears.
An oppressive, suffocating aura flooded the long corridor in less than a second.
It carried a terrifying, unmistakable atmospheric signature: the sharp, intoxicating scent of crushed pine needles, heavy obsidian smoke, and sheer, absolute dominance that commanded absolute obedience.
Instantly, every lesser warrior, servant, and pack member in the vicinity dropped heavily to their knees. Their knees slammed against the stone as their heads bowed so low their noses touched the cold floor in an involuntary, primal act of total submission.
The ambient temperature inside the grand corridor plummeted far below freezing in an instant. Frost crystallized rapidly across the stone walls, and the braziers lining the hallway flickered wildly before dying out completely, swallowed by a sudden influx of impenetrable darkness.
Fear became a tangible, physical entity in the room, wrapping tight, suffocating bands around every throat present. Even Kyle and Kaleb froze in place, their cruel laughter dying instantly in their throats as their grips loosened slightly on my body.
I forced my tear-blurred eyes upward, my breath catching permanently in my raw windpipe as the billowy smoke parted to reveal a towering, imposing silhouette framed against the harsh silver moonlight outside.
Dante.
The ruthless, feared Alpha of the North stood tall in the ruined doorway. His striking obsidian eyes cut straight through the lingering gloom, locking directly onto mine with a magnetic, terrifying intensity that made the emerald fire roaring inside my veins surge completely out of control.
