One.
This is the story of your life
You've never been the girl who wear the right clothes or watched the right shows. You've never had the loudest voice or the longest legs or the big get boobs or the most breathtaking smile. All you've ever been, really, is you. You who boys never noticed, you who watched from the shadows. You figure thats all you're ever going to be until she comes along. And she's everything you aren't,beautiful and bold, which is why nobody understands why she chooses you to sit with at lunch. Or show her around. Or lend her a pen. Or be her lab partner in 4th period biology. You don't understand it either but you go with it because thats all you've ever done. Taken whatever life gave you without questions.
So you don't ask her why when she slides into the empty sit opposite you. You don't ask her why when she offers to walk home with you cause her house is a street over. You don't ask her why when she asks if she can come in with you as you reach your house. You still don't ask when she asked if your parents are home. And after you've had the longest conversation of your life, after you've truly laughed for the first time, after she has brought the stars alive as you both sit crossed legged on your bedroom floor, when she leans over and kisses you softly, you definitely don't ask why.
Suddenly you aren't just you anymore. You're who she makes college plans with. Who she calls when she can't decide whether to buy the red dress or the blue one. Who she sends funny videos of her cat to. You're the one who's window she crawls into at 3am when her stepfather has touched all the parts of her that you too have touched. and you're the one whose touch heals her after shes been broken over and over by him.
For a while you revel in being all that, in being anything but boring old you, and you take your role in her life very seriously. But you don't realize yet, *you are healing her*. Soon, she begins to notice the boys who have noticed her from day one. Soon she begins to receive a lot more texts than she used to. Soon she begins to dress a bit like those girls you were never like. Soon she begins to have a lot more 'projects' and 'assignments' that don't allow her sit with you u ring lunch so much anymore. And you still don't realize that you've lost her until you see it. It's the end of the day,and she isn't at the library studying for a test. Unless the library is on some guys lap on the bleachers. and studying consists of shoving her tongue against his.
And as you see those hands whose touch had once filled you with wonder run over his body, as you see those lips that you haven't kissed in weeks latched onto his. you finally realize. she's gone. you taught her to love herself and there was no room left to love you.
And so this is the story of your life. You were never her lover or her friend. You were always just you, and 'you' was just a medicine she needed.
