The next morning, Damian waited in the apartment lobby for Elisya, who had promised to drive him to Darwin’s mansion. According to her, Darwin was a tough man to mee, someone really important.
Suddenly, his phone buzzed in his pocket.
Seraphina?
He steadied himself, his emotions swirling the moment he saw his wife’s name. Then he picked up. “What is it?”
“I’m waiting for you at the courthouse. Don’t take too long. I don’t want to keep being the wife of a broke loser like you.”
Damian had hoped, even just a little, that Seraphina would change her mind. Maybe even ask him to come back.
He was too naive.
“I’ve got something else to take care of. I’ll be a little late.”
“I don’t care! And what else could a jobless man like you possibly be doing besides sitting around thinking about your pathetic life? Even if you can see again, no company or bakery will hire you without a degree.”
“Fine. I’ll head there now,” Damian said, annoyed.
“Good.”
She hung up on him without warning. Damian let out a long sigh—just as a pink Rolls-Royce pulled up in front of him.
“Please, come in, Damian,” Elisya said, smiling from the driver’s seat.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Elisya. Looks like I can’t go with you right now.”
“Why?” Elisya asked, clearly disappointed.
“I need to get my divorce papers signed. My wife’s waiting for me.”
“Then get in. I’ll drive you there.”
“No, thanks. I can just take a taxi.”
“Don’t be like that, Damian. Aren’t we friends now?” The beautiful woman coaxed gently.
Damian glanced at her hopeful eyes and thought for a moment. “Alright.” He got in and sat beside her.
“I’m really sorry about your marriage,” Elisya said sincerely.
“Maybe this is just how things were meant to be.” Damian offered a small smile, trying to stay strong.
Elisya felt her heart swell. His calm, mature personality, his way of handling everything with grace, it made her like him even more.
“Is there something on my face, Elisya?” Damian asked, confused by the way she kept staring at him.
Elisya quickly looked away. “N-no. Nothing.”
Half an hour later, they pulled up outside the courthouse.
“Thanks for the ride.”
“Do you want me to go in with you?” Elisya asked, dying to see what kind of woman could throw away a man like Damian.
“No, I’ve got this. Just wait here. I won’t be long.”
With that, Damian stepped out and made his way inside. But the moment he entered, his eyes narrowed.
Seraphina wasn’t alone. She was standing with Alston.
“Where’s the paper I need to sign?” Damian asked coolly.
“Don’t act like you’re busy, Damian. Who do you think was waiting for you?” Alston sneered.
“You’ve been dying to have Seraphina, right? I’m giving her to you,” Damian shot back, expressionless.
Seraphina’s jaw clenched. She expected Damian to beg for her back, or at least show some emotion, but he was totally calm, like the divorce didn’t mean a thing to him.
What was he in such a rush for?
Seraphina smirked, an idea flashing through her mind.
“Before we get started, where’s our wedding ring? That silver one my dad paid for?”
Damian stiffened. He hadn’t expected her to bring up the ring.
“Don’t tell me you sold it?” she snapped, hands on her hips like she was furious.
“I’m giving you what you wanted a divorce. Think of the ring as my fee.”
“You ungrateful jerk! You should be thankful I’m not asking you to pay back all the money my dad spent feeding and clothing you!”
Damian sighed. “Give me some time. I’ll return the ring.”
“No! I want it now! If you don’t hand it over, I swear I’ll have you thrown in jail!”
Damian’s mind raced. How was he supposed to come up with ten grand in a day?
Seraphina smirked, satisfied to see him finally looking nervous.
“Don’t be so hard on him, babe. Poor guy,” Alston chimed in mockingly. “If he can’t pay, maybe we can sell one of his kidneys on the black market.”
Seraphina burst into laughter. “Yeah right. Like anyone would pay good money for his organs. My dad found him beaten to a pulp in the woods, remember?”
Damian’s chest tightened, but he didn’t argue. She wasn’t wrong, his body had been pretty damaged back then.
Suddenly, the doors opened and commotion erupted.
Seraphina and Alston turned to see what was going on—and their jaws dropped.
“E-Elisya?” Damian blinked in disbelief.
Seraphina was just as shocked. They had been in the same major back in college.
Alston quickly smoothed his hair and stepped toward Elisya, ignoring the men who were gawking at her beauty—and totally overlooking Seraphina.
“I didn’t expect to run into you here, Elisya,” he said with his best smile. As always, her beauty left him breathless. She was way hotter than Seraphina.
But Elisya didn’t even glance at him. She walked right past, causing onlookers to laugh at Alston’s embarrassment.
With graceful authority, she strode up to Seraphina.
“How much money did your father spend supporting Damian?”
“You know him?” Seraphina asked, stunned.
Alston let out a sarcastic laugh. “No way. A powerful woman like Elisya wouldn’t know a loser like him.”
“Could you stop insulting my boyfriend?” Elisya’s cold eyes met Alston’s.
He froze. That hit harder than anything.
Boyfriend?
Alston shook his head. “No way. You’re lying! There’s no way this loser is your boyfriend!”
“What exactly do you think is so impossible?” Elisya slipped her arm around Damian’s like it was the most natural thing in the world. “He’s the perfect man.”
“But he’s poor and no one even knows where he came from! I come from a respected billionaire family!”
“And that’s your problem, Alston. You think you’re better than everyone else. I don’t judge people based on money.” Then she turned to Seraphina with a smirk. “Unlucky you, Seraphina. I thought you were just academically challenged. Turns out, you suck at judging people too.”
Instead of being offended, Seraphina scoffed. “Judge him? Please. I’ve been married to Damian longer than you’ve known him. He’s useless and stupid!”
“Oh yeah?” Elisya smiled sharply. “Then tell me did you know he’s actually a brilliant doctor?”
“A doctor?” Seraphina doubled over laughing. “He didn’t even go to college! How could you fall for that nonsense? You’re the dumb one here. I may not have been the smartest in class, but at least I know how to pick a man. This one...” she clung to Alston’s arm, “he’s my future husband.”
“I didn’t realize someone from the honorable Vios family liked stealing other people’s spouses,” Elisya said with a cool grin.
Alston started sweating and quickly pulled his arm away from Seraphina. “Y-you’ve got it all wrong, Elisya! Seraphina begged me to pretend to be her boyfriend so Damian would divorce her!”
“Dont touch me, b***h!" Don’t ruin my image, you! How dare you deceive me! Elisya’s the only one I truly love!” Seraphina shouted.
Everyone froze.
Seraphina looked like she’d just been slapped in the face.
