Chapter 1: A Summer to Remember
The sun hung low in the sky, casting a golden hue over the quiet town of Brooksville. It was the kind of place where time seemed to slow down, where everyone knew everyone else’s business, and secrets were a luxury few could afford. For Lena, it was home—comfortable, familiar, and predictable.
But that predictability had been slowly fraying at the edges.
Lena stood on the porch of her small, weathered house, staring out at the horizon. The cool breeze whispered through the trees, but it did little to calm the storm inside her chest. Another summer had arrived, bringing with it a sense of restlessness she couldn’t shake. The town was abuzz with talk of a new community project to rebuild the local park after last year’s storm. Lena, always the responsible one, had volunteered without a second thought.
What she hadn’t expected was the presence of Evan—her best friend’s brother, the man who had quietly owned her heart for years.
Evan was back in town for the summer.
He had been away at college, living a life full of promise and excitement, while Lena had stayed behind, working at the local café and trying to keep everything together. He was the charming, carefree soul who could make anyone laugh, while Lena was the quiet observer, the one who had always been content to watch from the sidelines.
But this summer was different. There was an air of tension between them that hadn’t been there before. Maybe it was the way his smile seemed to linger a little too long when their eyes met, or the way his presence made her heart race in a way it hadn’t before. Or maybe it was the fact that she was starting to feel like she might finally have to confront the feelings she’d kept buried for so long.
“Lena!” The familiar voice of Dylan broke her from her thoughts. She turned to see him walking up the dirt path leading to the porch, his easy smile and casual gait never failing to bring her a sense of comfort.
Dylan had always been there for her. He was her best friend, the one who had supported her through everything. But there was something else in his eyes now, a tenderness that she couldn’t quite place. It had always been there, hovering just beneath the surface, but lately it felt more... real.
“Hey, you ready for the meeting?” Dylan asked, his voice filled with excitement. He had been instrumental in organizing the community project, always the one to get things done.
Lena nodded, trying to push aside the thoughts of Evan. “Yeah, just needed a minute to think.”
“You’re always thinking,” Dylan teased, his tone light. “Come on, we’ll be late.”
They walked side by side toward the town hall, the weight of unspoken words hanging between them. Lena glanced over at Dylan, noticing the way he kept his hands in his pockets, his expression thoughtful. She wondered if he knew—if he could sense the way her heart twisted whenever Evan was around. She wondered if he had ever noticed the way she looked at him, the way she couldn’t seem to look away.
When they arrived at the meeting, the room was filled with familiar faces—neighbors, friends, and families all gathered together to discuss the upcoming project. But Lena’s attention was fixed on one person.
Evan.
He stood at the front of the room, his casual stance and easy grin making it clear that he was in his element. He was talking to Mr. Harris, the town’s unofficial mayor, but his gaze kept drifting over to Lena. She caught it, that brief moment of eye contact that made her breath catch in her throat. It was nothing, really—a simple look. But to Lena, it felt like everything.
As the meeting began, Lena tried her best to focus, but her mind kept wandering back to Evan. And to Dylan.
The tension between the three of them was palpable, and yet neither of the two men had said a word about it. Lena didn’t know what was worse—the fact that she was in love with Evan, or the fact that Dylan had always been there for her, quietly supporting her while she pined after his brother.
