Chapter 28Shortly after dinner, I went next door to Brin’s. She answered the door before I even finished knocking. She wore a bright smile and her hair was down around her shoulders, brushed to a shine. When she let me in, she lowered her eyes and gave me a coquettish giggle that made me nervous. I didn’t want to hurt her, but I knew the moment I told her about Kyer, all her girlish flirtiness towards me would disappear. “Come in, come in,” she told me, opening the door wider and stepping aside. For the first time, I heard the little beep as my tag was scanned when I entered Brin’s home. Was nothing sacred? But I was sort of listening out for it, and I wasn’t the least surprised when it came. Brin’s parents were in the living room, on opposite ends of the sofa, glued to their consoles.
