Brin stayed by my side everywhere, except the restroom, and then she waited outside. Unlike the bathrooms in our homes, the restrooms in public buildings had screens in them above the sinks. That way, Monitors kept a watchful eye on everyone at all times. In previous societies, public toilets were high-crime areas, and while our stalls had doors that afforded privacy, no one wanted to be left entirely on their own.
