Kade
--
As we all set in the vehichle, I tried to sense her presence, but nothing was left besides a faint sweet smell. I felt even edgier now than when I first felt her presence. To be so close, to see her and then, for her to just vanish, sometimes it feels like fate really hates me.
"Well, that was a wasted trip," John said. "I think that the coffee was a little off as well. Definitely not as sweet as it usually is in the mornings."
"Maybe you are just whining because Jen wasn't there," said John while rolling his eyes.
John was about ready to start in on Max when I interrupted him.
Hey guys, did you see that waitress in there?" I asked. trying to play it off casual.
"Mags? Of course we saw her, she was our waitress. Did you think there was something off about her too?" said John.
"No, the other one, the younger one." They both looked at me like they had no clue what I was talking about.
"I didn't see any other waitress in there. It was pretty dead besides a couple out of town randoms in there," said John.
"I didn't notice anyone," Max said.
I was seriously starting to doubt myself, maybe I did imagine seeing her. But there was no way, everything inside of me said I saw her. I could still see every feature on her. Those eyes, that split second she made eye contact with me.
"Look, there was a girl in there. She looked off. I want you two to go find out about her. We have to make sure that no one suspicious is wondering around so close to our pack lands." I didn't want to let them know, until I knew for sure. From the looks of it she was human to top it off. otherwise there's no way she would have run off like that.
"Can we do this tomorrow morning?" said John, looking a little excited.
"No, tonight." There's no way I'm having him distracted. Knowing John, he'd forget what he was doing and just stay there staring at this Jen.
"How do we find her?" asked Max.
At least someone took his job seriously.
"She looked young, maybe 20. She has dark hair and green eyes." I said, trying to act like it was just a formal description.
"Wait, is she good looking?" asked John starting to act interested. Even though he was paying attention now, I still wanted to punch him in the face for being interested in MY mate.
I growled at John, "Keep your hands and your mind to yourself, John. This is a serious matter."
"Ok, we'll check into it and meet you back at the packhouse," said John.
---
"So why do you think Kade has us chasing after this girl anyways?" John asked Max.
"He must have his reasons," replied Max.
They walked back into the diner. They scanned the dining room and besides a few stragglers it was pretty empty.
"Sorry boys, we're about to be closing up soon. Did you forget something?" asked Mags. She looked a little more suspiciously at them this time.
"No, we just found out a friend of our works here, we haven't seen her in years and just wondered if she was on shift?" said John casually. "She's kind of short with dark hair and green eyes?"
"I thought you were interested in Jen?" said Mags, her smile leaving her face.
"Oh no, it's not like that, we just found out she works here and just wanted to say hi...." said John as he scratched the back of his head.
"Yeah, I don't know anyone that fits that description," and she turned away. "Maybe you got the wrong place."
Just then someone came out of the kitchen, it looked like the cook.
"Hey Mags, I told Ara she could leave, I'll help you clean up tonight." the man nodded at us. "Sorry guys, the kitchen is closed for the night. But hopefully you'll come visit us again." with that he went back into the kitchen.
Mags grumbled something and then started to walk away.
"Mags..." started John, trying to get more information.
She turned around and started at them. "Listen she's not who you're looking for. She's just a old cleaning lady. So leave the poor woman alone."
"Yeah, cause Ara sounds like an old cleaning lady name," whispered John to Max.
"What name would belong to an old cleaning lady?" grunted Max rolling his eyes.
Since they weren't going to get any more information from Mags, they left the diner. When Mags wasn't looking they headed to the back of the diner.
"Do you smell that Max?" John asked.
"I do smell a third person, it smells human though." said Max.
"Yeah, I wonder why Kade wants us to track a little human. Seems like it could have waited until tomorrow," said John as he looked in the direction the scent was leading.
"Kade is never wrong, he knows when something is off," responded Max.
"Darn, let's go, I hear that grumpy waitress coming," said John.
John and Max headed down the road, they followed the scent of the human to a secluded little house near the edge of the woods. It was actually so far off the road that unless you were looking for it, you wouldn't even notice it.
"I guess we found where she lives," said John to Max.
They looked around the small house and didn't see anything off. Nothing that looked dangerous. Just an old house. No scent of other shifters, or other humans for that case.
"Don't you think this could hold off until tomorrow?" said John.
"Kade asked us to do it. So we do it," replied Max.
"Do you hear that? She's moving around in there." said John. "We might as well find knock and see what's going on."
knock knock
The girl inside started threatening to call the sheriff on them.
"Let's come back later," whispered John. "We can at least tell Kade that we found were she lives."
Max nodded and the took off.
When they got back to the pack house Kade was waiting for them in his office. When he heard them approaching his office he stopped pacing and sat down, trying to act like he wasn't waiting this whole time. Hoping that she was real, maybe hoping she wasn't real. After all, it would be hard to deal with having a human for a mate.

John and Max walked into my office and sat down. I just stared at them, trying to see if their search had been successful.
"What did you find out," I asked them.
"Well, the older waitress said there wasn't a girl with that description working there, but the cook came out and said that there was a woman named Ara working there," started John.
Ara, that name had my attention. That had to be her name. I nodded at John and waited for him to continue with his report.
"She claimed that she was an old cleaning lady, but she acted really weird."
"What is the point of tell me any of this if she wasn't who you were looking for?" I said agitated. To get my hopes up and it wad just some old cleaning lady. I guess I was seeing things.
"Well, we didn't believe her, so we went out back and followed the scent of the human," continued John. "We followed it to this small, old home on the edge of the woods."
John stopped for a second. It took everything inside of me to not throw him across the room. Why can't he just get to the point.
"And...?" I asked agitated.
"Well, we didn't see her, she threatened to call the sheriff on us when we knocked on the door. So we took off," said John.
